In these days of "gotcha!" politics, it seems as though everyone is waiting for someone to slip up. Where did we get the attitude that if you express and opinion or make a prediction, then you're committed to it for all eternity lest you be accused of "flip flopping"?

So long as people don't try to change history, what's wrong with adjusting or amending your position as situations change and new information becomes available?

It's alright to make mistakes. What matters is whether you learn from those mistakes.

In that spirit, allow me to list a few of mine:

I thought Mark Latham would reinvigourate the Labor party in 2004
I was wrong.

After the holy-Joe bombast of Rattle and Hum, I was certain the next U2 album was going to be crap.
I was wrong.

I was a big fan of Ralph Nader in 2000.
I was wrong.

I used to think the Beach Boys were some also-ran teenie band from the 60s of no great significance.
I was wrong.

Just two days ago I thought Malcolm Turnbull would be a dead cert to take over the leadership of the Liberal Party.
I was wrong.
Put a puppet on it.

I fit in this category.

I used to think the Beach Boys were some also-ran teenie band from the 60s of no great significance.
I was wrong.

Give me some time to think and I will come up with some of my own.

I'm sure I've been wrong many times in my life.

I used to think the Beach Boys were some also-ran teenie band from the 60s of no great significance.
I was wrong.

Heh, that was me too. I used to just have the gratest hits and thought that was enough. Now, I've got every single album, just because I found a store that had a copy of the Sunflower/Surf's Up CD for a decent price. That certainly opened up my eyes.

Besides that, I think I've Flip-Flopped before. Being a Star Wars fan, I was under this impression that anything Star Trek must suck, but honestly some of the stuff isn't that awful. Kahn is such a good movie and some of the original series episodes aren't that bad.

Also, I was kind of annoyed about the whole flip-flopping thing during the 2004 campaign that surrounded Kerry. I agree with you Bill, we're all humans, so why can;t we make mistakes?

However, being in the state that had to deal with Romney's idiocy, it is really annoying to see him flip-flop, because he's doing it for no other reason that to help his cause. Kerry denounced his vote for the war because he later realized it was wrong. Who knows the real reason why Romney suddenly is Pro-Life?

Should I admit that I used to think the Beatles were sh*t.

I came to the conclusion I was very very very wrong, but you will notice I have made up for it
I'm a BIGGER Beatles fan than you and I'm an even BIGGER Wings fan than that...
'You're a Paul McCartney fan? No you're a Wings fan'. 'Thankyou Scotland' Ho Hey Ho...

I once thought that Labour's General Election victory in 1997 would bring about great change for the good.

I was wrong.

I once thought that Ringo Starr's solo career wasn't worth bothering with.

I was wrong.

Before it was released, I thought that Memory Almost Full was a disaster waiting to happen, given the description of it being cobbled together from outtakes from Driving Rain & Chaos & Creation.

I'm very thankful to have been proved wrong.

I've been wrong so many times in my life that this list could go on ad infinitum.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Dances...& sings, "I was right, & you were wrong, I get to sing the I Was Right song." I've not done that in a while. Sure, we all grow, & learn, if we didn't we'd still be sitting in the dark, in a cave somewhere, right? Mind you, some people LIKE camping. :)

I think if people DID NOT flip flop.....they would be mentally dead or too stubborn to learn!!!! :D
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
I've been wrong a lot in my life...but once the lesson is learned...I try not to linger on my mistakes...and move forward.

It is not bad to be wrong. It is bad to ignore all the tools available to make it right.
