Warning: Minor spoilers! Fiona and I went to see Amercian Gangster at the theatre yesterday and it really was worth the trip. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe were brilliant as the leads in a dramatization of a real life crime thriller based on the life of Frank Lucas. Watching it with the knowledge that it's based on true events makes this movie almost frightening - the fact that members of the US military were responsible for transporting Lucas' heroin from Vietnam to New York & New Jersey during the war, the way Lucas was so well respected amongst the celebrities and glitterati of the time... some of the violence in the film is sickening and, knowing that it all happened, it's enough to drain the blood from your face. It's an excellent movie, but it's not for the faint hearted. It arguable whether this film makes a hero of someone who, directly or indirectly through his dealings killed and ruined the lives of hundreds - if not thousands - of Americans. Personally, I think this movie is balanced enough to have got away with showing enough of the positive and negative sides of Lucas' personality to allow the audience to still root for Crowe's law enforcer but feel something for Lucas when he is finally brought to justice. Without a doubt, one of the best movies I have seen this year - I'd recommend this to any fans of crime, gangster or political genres. Gripping stuff - 9/10. |
