On my way home from work yesterday I sat down on the train and started to read a book. The girl sitting next to me was also reading a book.As soon as the train started to move, out came the dreaded mobile phone. During the next 25 minutes from Waterloo I found out her name -Alison- address, mobile number, office number, make and colour of her car, dogs name and where she and her two friends were going later that night. I tried to ignore what she was saying, but when someone is talking right next to you it's hard. What's worrying is the fact that anyone within earshot could be writing those details down for use later. I even heard a girl give out her credit card number recently! Do people realize what they say in public could be dangerous? People should be very aware of what they say in public, especially when it comes to saying addresses and 'phone numbers. |

I honestly don't think people who use cell phones care what information they are giving out. They will be sorry when some psycho comes after them and hurts them because they gave out their name, address and phone number out loud. |

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
|
I honestly don't think you should generalize about people who use cell phones. I also use one...and I care about what information I 'give out'. |

Same here. I never give out my credit card or bank accounts on a cell phone anyway. Molly please don't put all cell phone users into one category. For some people it is their only phone line, which I don't think is very smart, and for others it is another way to stay in touch with the people you care the most about. |

Since you mention it, I'm amazed at people who don't guard their PIN codes at the supermarket. I've seen quite a few. I always use several fingers to enter mine just to make it harder to see. But it alarms me how many people quite explicitly go punch-punch-punch-punch so that it's impossible not to see what keys they're pressing. |

'D' It looks like it will not make any difference here in the UK  Big Brother Britain: Government and councils to spy on ALL our phones Officials from the top of Government to lowly council officers will be given unprecedented powers to access details of every phone call in Britain under laws coming into force tomorrow. Also in this report it states that, Files will also be kept on the sending and receipt of text messages. And even By 2009 the Government plans to extend the rules to cover internet use: the websites we have visited, the people we have emailed and phone calls made over the net. I'm not very tall and it does annoy me when I ask a reluctant cashier if they can pass me the pin code device so I don't stretch and everyone can see. Its often the same woman in Boots too actually. I shouldn't have to feel guilty. Most cashiers do it without me asking so this doesn't apply to all. Also when queuing for the cashpoint, why do people queue so close, it is obvious who is next, I always leave quite a space between the person in front of me. |

Most people here know of what I think of cell phone use in public--quite rude. I was out to dinner by myself last week. Another woman was also there by herself. Her cell phone rang incessantly and I wanted to slap her. She ruined my peace and quite by talking so loud. As far as the PIN numbers, I have asked people to move back when I'm entering mine. I also try to run the card as a credit card as often as possible so nobody can see my PIN. |

All our freedom seems to be disappearing. We in the UK are the most watched people on earth, with cctv cameras everywhere. From when I leave my office, along the street, into the tube,on the tube train,on the main line train and part of the way home locally I am on cctv every second.and I do mean EVERY second.Every spot is covered. For a distance of almost 30 miles and 60-75 minutes travelling time big brother is watching me. Now it seems they will listen in to phone calls and snoop on emails/Internet. Hmm have to give them something worth listening to I suppose

Extremely worrying. Recording somebody's internet usage could be used to paint a very imbalanced picture of their personality. For example, let's say somebody was falsely accused of rape and their internet records were pulled. If that person happened to frequent porn sites from time to time, I believe that information could potentially sway an undecided jury, despite the fact that probably tens of thousands of perfectly balanced people access porn online every day. Over the last half-a-dozen years, I have read probably hundreds of articles about terrorism amongst other things because I am interested in current affairs. Again, let me offer this scenario. A bizarre string of events leaves me accused of aiding an act of terrorism, something I am completely innocent of. Any lawyer worth his salt could extract those particular articles that I've read over the years and use them to present the fact that I have an 'unhealthy obsession' with terrorism, even though I have probably read much more online about The Beatles, music, football and other subjects. This is all very Orwellian and I'm not happy about the direction this country is taking as regards to stripping away it's citizens' privacy. |

Linda, I agree with you about how annoying some people can be with cell phones. I usually just keep my cell in my car...for emergencies or if I am out and need to make a call. Not a lot of phone booths around anymore. I find the addiction that some people have to their phones, and their own self importance...tedious at best. I just didn't like being lumped into a generalization of cell phone users.

This sounds much worse than what the US government is doing to us. This is extremely scary. Can this just be implemented without any input from the people? I guess they must. You already have more cameras spying on you than anywhere I have ever been. And crime is still committed, correct? What do they think they will gain by this? Depending on a jury, this kind of evidence could be used to convict an innocent person. I've looked up all kinds of topics, too, on the internet. Guess I should go bury my hard drives now. |

Well, first of all I think mobile phones rock. Well maybe not quite but I think they're useful little things. But I have overheard some similar things, actually on public transport in particular. Just the other week two young girls were talking, phoning friends and sharing all types of details- I wasn't really listening but I think they mentioned everything from their plans for the evening, where they lived, where their friends lived, phone numbers etc. |

I have gone in and changed my PIN number. I wanted all my cards to have the same number. As for credit cards in the UK, I've never had to enter a PIN when I used it. I only used it at the hotel where I was staying and I have no idea of what the PIN is. The hotel was part of a package with the air fare and it was just for "incidentals". I got cash at an ATM and spent cash for everything. My bank here had told me that I would get the best exchange rate that way. Back to cell phones, I overheard some teenagers, who were skipping school, telling each other very intimate details of their sex lives on the bus. No wonder two of them were pregnant. |

Here it is considered rude to speak loudly on the mobile phone. In some places it's considered rude to use it at all. Ironically we people in evil dictatorship states are not watched and monitored nearly as much as those of you in the bastions of freedom and democracy.

I also cover the key pad with my other hand, or use my wallet as a barrier. One time, this lady was standing so close that she was actually breathing down my neck. I actually turned my back on her so that she couldn't see what numbers I was punching. I rarely use my credit card, & if I do, it's in a store that I KNOW that I can trust. I agree about the talking on your phone in inappropriate places. Please people, don't TALK & DRIVE!! You cannot possibly pay attention to both things at once! I either let it ring, or pull over, or talk at red lights. If the light changes, I tell the other person that I'm hanging up in order to drive. If they don't like it, oh well. My life is more important than anything you have to say. I should know, having been in a life-altering accident. I have THE REST OF MY LIFE to talk to you, but not while I'm driving. |

That's part of the 'beauty' of being an American..."Big Brother" is always watching out for us. <_< I can't quite reconcile giving up our freedom to gain freedom, but that's the sort of logic the powers that be would like us to follow. Anyhow, as far as my cell phone use, I do try to be sensitive to others around me. I never give personal information over the phone when I'm in public, that's not the nature of my calls. Merry |
