Marcel Marceau, whose visual poetry revived the art of mime, has entered upon the final silence.

Marceau, 84, a Holocaust survivor who performed around the world, died on Saturday in Paris, French media reported.

Former assistant Emmanuel Vacca announced Marceau's death on France-Info radio, but gave no details about the cause.

Wearing white face paint, soft shoes and a battered hat topped with a red flower, Marceau was internationally famous for his 1947 creation of Bip and played the entire range of human emotions on stage for more than 50 years, never uttering a word. Off stage, however, he was famously chatty.

"Never get a mime talking. He won't stop," he once said.

Marceau's lithe gestures and pliant facial expressions gave life to characters from a peevish waiter to a lion-tamer to an old woman knitting.

A French Jew, Marceau survived the Holocaust and worked with the French Resistance to protect Jewish children.

His biggest inspiration was Charlie Chaplin. He, in turn, inspired countless young performers and was single handedly responsible for reviving the craft of mime after World War II.

Michael Jackson borrowed his famous "moonwalk" from a Marceau sketch, "Walking Against The Wind", and David Bowie was said to have studied with Marceau.

If you've ever seen Mel Brook's Silent Movie, he was the only person who had a spoken line in the whole film. He shouted "No!!!!" when they asked him if he wanted to be in the film.

So sad. Micheal Jackson "borrowed" the moonwalk from him. Such talent, & he hardly ever said anything. RIP.
