As I do more research I notice that Capital One is the ONLY card accepted overseas that has no foreign conversion fee -- plus the one that has chosen to waive the MC/Visa 1% fee which is standard to all credit cards.

Discover has no foreign conversion fee either but as it's not accepted overseas it's a moot point.

One alternative to Capital One is using a credit union issued card which will only have the 1% Visa or MC fee, which to my mind is still more than I want to pay for absolutely nothing.

Here are the fees for individual credit cards from moneybluebook.com:

Capital One 0%
Discover 0% - Not Generally Accepted Overseas
Wachovia 1%
Washington Mutual 1%
American Express 2% - Not Generally Accepted Overseas
Bank of America 3%
Chase 3%
Citibank (Citi Card) 3%
HSBC 3%
U.S. Bank 3%
Wells Fargo 3%

Thank you.

Linda when I phoned the gallery, I dialed 011 44 and then the phone number. There may be a

number (0)20 ~ only dial the 20. So it may be 011 44 20 then the rest of the number.

Good luck.

Though you folks going to the concert may be interested in this -

Beatles fans have been sent into a frenzy over rumours Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are set to reunite on stage. After Liverpool City Council granted McCartney's production company $3.4m to stage the Sound City music festival, fans are now speculating Paul is secretly planning a special gig with his former bandmate.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

You pick them up at the 08 place until a certain date. You pick them up at Will Call the day of the concert. You need the credit card and a photo ID, Heidi. I did get the email and have it printed along with all the other emails--like the one that said I won the tickets in the first place.

Tickets will not be mailed overseas, according to the email.

More advice. My bank advised me to let all the credit card companies know that I will be overseas. The teller said if I didn't do this when transactions that originated from outside the US started coming through, the cards would be shut off. So, I spent 45 minutes doing that.

I also talked to Capital One and they do not charge a service fee for foreign transactions. The Liverpool hotel is going on that card.

FYI...I was looking for something "easy" to do on the first day that I arrive in London...someone at the travel agent recommended I take a stroll on New Bond street and look at the Queen's shop. Also they suggested I look at an area called "The Muse" which I hear has antiques.

Also they said that I should attend "Evensong" at St. Pauls' Cathedral or Westminster Abbey; they said it's a good way to get in for free and to experience it.

So, what do you Londoners think? :)

Question, do you think I'll be able to find souvenirs of Anfield or the team that plays there. A boy that works for me is a big soccer (football) fan and is jealous of the fact that I'm going to go to that stadium. I'd like to bring him something back.

Great thx!

Just a piece of info if anyone is interested. I just called Verizon (my cell phone co.) They have a global cell phone that I can use at no charge in the UK. The calls are $1.29 per minute which is high but I don't expect long chat sessions. I think it will be good to have. Don't know if anyone else is interested but you might check with your carrier.

Option one - You can go to the Anfield souvenir shop at Anfield just inside the Shankly Gates

Option two - You can go to the Anfield souvenir shop in Williamson Square in Liverpool City Centre

Option three - You can shop online at http://store.liverpoolfc.tv/

Linda I missed what you said about your AAA debit card earlier. Sounds like a good alternative actually. I wanted to avoid getting socked by the ATM for both an ATM charge and a foreign ATM charge for each withdrawal, which is what some banks will do if you withdraw money overseas. So I did open my Bank of America account to withdraw money when I am in England -- there will be no additional charge, and because they exchange vast amounts of money, the exchange rate will be good. I'll probably close the account after the trip.

When I traveled many years ago, it was a good idea to use travelers checks...apparently it isn't anymore as many places may not accept them. So people use credit cards particularly in light of the fact that the dollar is so miserable now, it's easy to spend a lot of money at one time. So I am happy to use the Capital One card which according to them, doesn't charge foreign transaction fees and waives the 1% Visa fee. I don't want to pay extra fees for use of credit cards as I pay off the balance every month.

Plus I would rather use that money to buy Jayne extra rounds at the pub! :D

Lisa, there is no rental charge for the phone just higher rates for the calls. I am still going to use it since I am basically alone and think it's a good idea to have. Jayne mentioned something the other day about no phone box at the train station and it got me thinking plus this way I can call home and not be charged those crazy hotel fees. The price of calls are the same wether I call someone in the UK or the US.

I was told that once I get to the UK, I can buy a SIM card that can be used there. I will have to check in to this further. Otherwise, I will be searching for pay phones, as I won't use hotel phones. I doubt very much if my pay as you go phone can be used internationally. Rick's cell phone is a pay as you go phone and he buys SIM cards in foreign countries.

Question, do you think I'll be able to find souvenirs of Anfield or the team that plays there. A boy that works for me is a big soccer (football) fan and is jealous of the fact that I'm going to go to that stadium. I'd like to bring him something back.

Option one - You can go to the Anfield souvenir shop at Anfield just inside the Shankly Gates

Option two - You can go to the Anfield souvenir shop in Williamson Square in Liverpool City Centre

Option three - You can shop online at http://store.liverpoolfc.tv/

Ahhhhhhhhhh Colin I was goin to post the same, nice one mate B)

Kaiser Chiefs Confirmed!

Fantastic - another 'big name' band to play alongside Paul in the Liverpool Sound concert! I've never seen the Kaiser Chiefs before, but I really like their two albums.

Good to see. ^_^

We also want to let you know that we expect to send the tickets to UK ticket holders

I talked to Rick last night and he said the SIM card in the UK is definitely the way to go. I will be checking online to see which kind is compatible with my phone and where I can buy one. He said you then buy time just like the pay as you go phones here. He said I shouldn't have any problems because the instructions will be in English as opposed to Russian. :P

LINDA 2 questions. How were you able to book your train tickets from the US. I can't register on Virgin's site.

Also is a SIM card something you put in your existing phone? How much per minute will they charge?

THX, plans are falling into place now, I'm getting so excited.

So COLIN and LIPA which of the scarfs should I get?

Just a word of warning about SIM cards. Yes, they are the little chip-type things you put in your phone, however, If your phone is tied to a package with your mobile provider and the phone itself was part of your plan, it may be locked against being used with any other SIM cards. Check ahead, otherwise you may be left with a non-refundable SIM card and a phone you can't use it with.

However, if that is the case, then there are some very cheap pay as you go phones in the UK. You can buy handsets from supermarkets such as Tesco or Asda/stores like Argos for less than ten pounds and many pay as you go SIM cards are free or just a matter of a few pounds. They won't exactly be great phones, but you'd be able to make calls on them and that's what matters.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

You can make international calls on them too Andy? How would you find out what the per minute rate is for international calls on those phones?

Depending on the moblie phone company you choose, you can check their tariff on their individual websites. The most popular companies are;

O2
Orange
3
T-Mobile
Virgin Mobile

...but if you were forced to go down that route, then it would probably work out cheaper to buy international call vouchers (available from lots of stores, especially newsagents) and dial the local number on the voucher on your mobile and then, when you're connected, you can make the call 'back home'.

Obviously getting an international SIM would be the best way to call home, but I'm just highlighting possible problems and solutions should they arise.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I think its funny that The Kaiser Chiefs are singing because the last time I saw Paul (Camden Roundhouse) I saw KC there the day after. I wonder if they will sing Jet together? KC sang it that time as Paul told them he forgot to sing it.

On the subject of phone cards, they are great on your own phone, but if you use a phone box BT also charge to use their phone so you have less time. I guess that is why we pay to have our phone line aswell as phone calls. This is just what I know from being a student as my parents lived in Asia and now France. However, it still works out cheaper than just putting money directly in the phone box. So using a mobile with these phone cards may be cheaper too than using a phone box.

ROCK stars the Kaiser Chiefs are to play the Liverpool Sound concert.

The Leeds chart-toppers will join Sir Paul McCartney at the Anfield gig on June 1.

Culture officials today confirmed the band had been signed up for the special Capital of Culture event.

Sir Paul said today: “It should be a whole lot of fun.

“Final details of the concert have yet to be announced, so I don’t want to give too much away.

“But this is a great start.”

Further names for the concert are to be announced in coming weeks, including what is being described as “a very special international superstar guest”.

An extra 4,000 tickets also go on sale today after it was agreed to increase the audience capacity for the stadium concert.

Added to that will be a special allocation of 500 tickets reserved for community groups, schools and charities in the Anfield and Breckfield area.

Today’s announcement comes after months of speculation over who will perform at the high-profile concert.

It is being headlined by the 65-year-old former Beatle and is expected to be one of the highlights of Capital of Culture year.

Culture Company chief executive Kris Donaldson said: “We’re really excited, the Kaiser Chiefs are one of the hottest and biggest selling bands in the UK.”

The Kaiser Chiefs rose to fame in 2004 with their debut album Employment, and have enjoyed a string of hits including Every Day I Love You Less And Less, I Predict A Riot and Ruby.

Later this summer fans will also be able to see the band at Creamfields.

An initial 27,500 tickets for the Liverpool Sound were sold via a special ballot launched in September 2007. The new tickets mean the total capacity for the concert is nearly 36,000.

BBC2 will broadcast highlights from the concert on the evening of the show, while Radio 2 will also be covering the event.

Wonder who the 'special international superstar guest could be

off to check out all the local gigs around for around that time and post poss selections, already noticed Roger Waters plays in Liddypool next week (so in Europe ;))

Try going to Raileurope.com....they have reasonable prices, but you have to get the tickets before you go to the UK.

Virgin wouldn't take reservations outside of the UK...I think Dani helped Linda get her tickets.
