Sorry you're not coming to the meet-up Dani, by the way, I'm sure you have your reasons. If you change your mind then it'd be great to see you there - if not then I can respect that and I'll hopefully see you around or in London.

Fiona and I will be there, so consider us 'confirmed'. ;)

could you guys not just exchange any unwanted $ or £ at the Post Office here (UK) Doesnt charge you for the exchange which a lot of places do.... although I got a wee bit lost.

Lisa, yeah course I'm still seeing Paulie. Wouldn't miss him for anything  ;)

You're right, Dani. The post office do a decent rate of exchange when you're buying dollars, commission free! :)

I never knew that. Somebody will have to point me to a post office in London that does that before I head to Heathrow.

As far as I know, all Post Offices apart from the very smallest rural branches always carry dollars, so every branch in central London would do it. You should be able to find one very easily, Linda. :)

Thanks guys for letting us know about the post offices. That is great. But of course as Colin said -- when are their hours of operation?

Dani if you're not at the meetup I hope I'll see you sometime when I'm around....

Dani if you're not at the meetup I hope I'll see you sometime when I'm around....

It varies branch to branch but, in my experience, Monday to Friday it's usually approximately 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Satudays it tends to be 9 a.m. to midday and Sunday they're closed.

Colin was referring to the post office actually closing branches down for good, but that's mainly local branches. Most of the main post offices in the city centres of Britain will be unaffected by the downsizing of the post office's retail arm.

So that means that we can find something in Liverpool, and in St. Helen's I know there's one near Jayne, though they are huge screw-ups there.

If people aren't coming to the meet up because they don't want to be in the same room as some other people then I think that's probably unnecessary. With the amount of people who are going to be there, it will be perfectly possible to avoid the people you want to avoid and just chat with those you'd like to. It would be a shame to miss out on such a potentially fantastic social event just because there are people there who you have clashed with in the past. Not everyone will get on with everyone else, sure, but what about the people you do get along with?

There will probably never be a chance like this again where so many people from all across the world will be in the same room together. I would strongly recommend that anyone with doubts take the opportunity to come along and not miss out on a night that a lot of people will probably we talking about for a long time to come. You'd probably regret it.

Not only that, but something like this could build bridges and you could even be surprised by how you interact with those you haven't even really talked to much online, perhaps even turning casual acquiantences into life-long friendships. If some still don't want to come along for their own reasons, then that's completely their decision and I respect that, but, please people, think about it carefully. There's much more to gain than there is to lose by coming along.

Personally, I'd like to see everyone from this board who happens to be in Liverpool at that point at the meet-up.

Andy you're good!!!

Nat, I'm excited to meet you too.!!

This truly is a rare opportunity. My friend thinks I'm crazy to spend this much money and travel time for four days. I told her it's a once in a lifetime and I couldn't miss it. I likened it to a devout Catholic going to see the Pope at the Vatican (I'm referring to Paul here  ) the meet-up and all the extras are like seeing the Pope at the Vatican at Christmas.

This is a place where we are meeting a lot of people for the first time, some of whom I do really want to meet btw however I have no interest in meeting someone I dont want to meet. Its bad enough dealing with people you know/dislike/whatever in the 'real' world let alone have to bother with crap from the computer world.

I'm a BIGGER Beatles fan than you and I'm an even BIGGER Wings fan than that...

Someone ;) is going to try to capture some of the excitement for SF Radio so everyone can get a sample.

Of course if anyone doesn't make it to this meetup, there is always the one in June in the LA area. Plus don't forget the one in the works for next year at the Hard Rock Amusement Park in Myrtle Beach, SC!

I'm making the trip to Liverpool just for the meet-up, dragging my wife along, although she's looking forward to it now. ;) It will be fantastic to actually meet people who at the moment are just names on a message board!

As Andy said, this will be a once in a lifetime meet-up. Let's make this a night to remember. So even if you are not going to the concert, come along to the meet.

Probably because they dont want to. I think I know who the other 2(there may be a 3rd as well) are you are referring to but they pretty much haven't wanted to from the start I dont think, although I of course wont speak on their behalf but I dont gt why because we talk on a messageboard we should be at such a liberty to go to one of these things.

I am feeling bad because it is coming across that I dont appreciate the effort Jayne has gone to and as i have met her she is of course lovely (try not to choke when you read that Jayne :P ) I think I have been pretty clear with my reasons without going into specifics. Like I have said I have no probs meeting fellow Paul McCartney fans.

I am aware that I am coming across as petty but I just dont like bullsh*t and there is not a lot more I can say.

Anyway. I've let it be know my thoughts on the topic.

Dani, I do respect your reasons. Maybe there will be other ways to meet up.
I hope so!

Question for Jayne, Colin....other Liverpudlians....Londonites.... B) :P

Have you ever driven from L'pool to London Heathrow?

I'm trying to figure out if it's easier to rent a car and drive OR just take the trains...I will have luggage. A rental car would be easy in the fact that I could just shove the suitcase in the trunk and drive straight to the airport. According to Mapquest, it will take close to 4 hours (is this right?).

To get to Heathrow from L'pool...have to take a train to London then either a cab or another train...I would think it's a pain to drag around my luggage.

Any suggestions or advice?

I will be meeting Dani in Edinburgh and London. I have no idea of what the issues are with people not wanting to meet other people from the forum. I find it sad that we can't spend an evening together and let bygones be bygones for a few hours. We did that in Toronto in 2005 and Beatnut and I found out that we actually liked each other after years of arguing on pm.com.

Heidi, your luggage would be going in to the boot, not the trunk. ;)

Personally, I wouldn't consider driving in the UK, but that is your decision.

Everyone is obviously free to make their own decisions as to whether they want to be at the meet-up at the Crown Hotel pub.

However, as Linda says, it would be great if differences could be set aside for a few hours (or even less) for the greater good. After all, when will something like this happen again -- so many people from different parts of the world all united in love of Beatles who actually know each other (in a sense, well, you know what I mean). What a shame to miss it.

I'll get off my soapbox now. ;)

The email is in the other room. Depending on when you arrive in Liverpool, you can pick them up at the 08 headquarters. If not there, at will call. You need the credit card you used to buy the ticket and a photo ID, which you will have--passport. I'm taking my confirmation email, too.

to anyone who wants to do the drive.I may advice otherwise. The issue with fuel is not great at the moment and you'd prob def be able to find cheaper alternatives with dare I say the train but I dont know coz I always just rely on public transport anyway

Yes I get that this is a good oportunity to meet people that you have spoken to on here but seriously there are people i just dont want to meet. Alright. The idea of this is to meet Beatles/Macca fans and if i meet them then great.

Hi Heidi

Ive never personally driven from Liverpool to Heathrow but when are you thinking of doing it?? just your return journey ??

It is approx 4 - 5 hours to drive there, that of course is depending on traffic too :hmm: OK there are plenty of stops on route on the motorways but you would have to make sure you give lots of time to get to heathrow - you dont want to go missing your plane back do you (or is that part of your plans too lol :P :P ) Liverpool to Heathrow is all motorways so you wouldn't have to go on many 'small roads'

any more advice just shout ;)

I've never driven to London, but I believe it takes close on 5 hours. I remember how long it took to get in to the center of London after leaving the motorway when I last went there on the coach, and that was way back in the 80's, so imagine how long it will take now. :hmm:

Once you're out of the centre of Liverpool it's motorway all the way to Heathrow. M62/M6/M42/M40/M25/M4. No roundabouts on the motorways, although there will be some between Liverpool and the M62 and a couple between the M4 and Heathrow. You don't need to worry about Central London traffic, the airport is right by the motorway, nowhere near central London.

The Liverpool-London drive is easy, I've done it loads of times. More difficult if you're not used to driving on the left, but then I've driven all over Europe and in the US so I'm used to driving on the wrong side of the road and switch over easily. Give yourself plenty of time and allow for a couple of stops on the way as it can be tiring. It's best you've got someone with you who can drive also, or take it in turns, so that they can help you concentrate on which side of the road you are/which way you're turning etc. and watch out for other traffic and tell you when it's OK to go at junctions. Just as a 'two heads are better than one' thing, in case you forget what you're doing or get into a panic.

Petrol is expensive here, but I reckon if there's more than one in the car it'd still work out cheaper than trains. And more fun, you can see lots of other places while you've got the car.

I can't figure out the roundabouts. I've never driven there and I'm not about to try it. The roundabouts seem to be mass chaos to me.

You have to give way to the right Linda and it does help if people are in the right lanes. We had some swear word pull out in front of us so he got a parping and hand gestures. Some people shouldn't be in a car

First time I drove in the UK I thought you just merged into a roundabout. Well I almost mergered into an 18 wheeler!! It was scarey for sure but the scariest part is driving down a narrow county lane with a big bus coming down the other way and someone on a bicycle on your right. YIKES! I only drove in the UK once :hmm:

Quote:

SIR Paul McCartney is returning to Liverpool for what he calls his revenge gig.

He was referring to a concert of his classical music being staged at Liverpool cathedral, where he was rejected as a chorister more than 50 years ago.

Sir Paul gave an exclusive interview to the ECHO about his two Capital of Culture concerts in his home city.

For one he will be in the audience, and for the second on stage.

The former Beatle promised the Anfield stadium concert would be “my tribute to Liverpool”.

But tomorrow he joins a capacity audience in the cathedral for the northern premiere of his choral work Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart), dedicated to first wife Linda.

He said: “There is no better place for me to hold this concert than in Liverpool where I’ll also get to invite my family.

“I have a lot of connections with the cathedral, having gone there as a kid and applied to join the choir.

“I got turned down, so this is my revenge trip.”

The performance will feature the cathedral choristers, the singing group he hoped to join in 1953 at the age of 11, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and choir.

Sir Paul said: “It is a privilege to be able to work with a great orchestra or a great choir.

“One of the things I particularly like about the Liverpool choir is that they are very committed.

“You get people from all walks of life, so I love the humanity of it.

“You get a plumber standing next to a surgeon, so it’s a great mix.

“And that’s something I’m interested in and have always liked.

“As on a train you find yourself next to someone who could be anyone. And it’s like that in a choir. I love this coming together of various types of people.”

He said Ecce Cor Meum, premiered in 2001 and commissioned for the world-renowned Magdalene College Oxford choir, was special.

“It was a great compliment to be asked to write something for them. They are showing you that they trust you,” he added.

Sir Paul said he hoped the work would sound particularly good in the cathedral with its big acoustics.

He said it was particularly interesting to work with a text partly in Latin.

Recalling his schooldays at Liverpool Institute (now the Lipa arts college of which he is lead patron) Sir Paul said: “I was not very good at Latin. But I liked it.

“I always used to encourage my own kids to learn a bit of Latin because it’s the root of the English language and all the romantic languages. Sometimes, when you are trying to work out what a word means, you can go back to the Latin root and I like that aspect.”

Tomorrow marks the third time Sir Paul has heard a live performance of Ecce Cor Meum which won the best album award at the Classical Brits last year. He said: “I heard it in London and New York.

“But one of the great things is that these mark a bit of a night off for me.

“Everything I’ve ever done with music has involved me performing so it is one of the luxuries that I can be in the audience.

“I couldn’t play it anyway. And I couldn’t conduct it.

“It’s out of my range.”

He said he would never revise an orchestral work: “I’d rather write something new. You write something and you are supposed to be happy with it so I wouldn't go back.

“I wouldn't tinker with it.”

Macca also revealed he is now writing a film score but added: “I can't really give anything away on that one at the moment.”

Paul McCartney’s first classical work the Liverpool Oratorio was premiered in Liverpool cathedral in 1991 to mark the Liverpool Phil’s 150th anniversary.

“The cathedral was always looming over our classroom,” he recalled.

“It was mostly finished by then. But they were still fixing on bits and pieces.”

My thank you

SIR Paul said his Capital of Culture Anfield concert would be a personal thank-you to his home city.

“I’m doing a decent length of songs,” he said, denying earlier rumours that he was singing only four numbers.

“I know we’ve also got a few guests. But I’m not sure of exactly who. It’s still a bit up in the air so I wouldn’t get anybody’s hopes up.”

“It’s going to be interesting.

“But it is basically my tribute to Liverpool.”

I turned down Paul McCartney

THE man who turned Paul McCartney down for the Liverpool cathedral choir said the former Beatle owed him.

Ronald Woan, 88, said: “If I had taken him on, he would probably have ended up teaching music in a comprehensive school.

“Under the circumstances he went on to do other things.

“I think he owes me an awful lot of money.”

Mr Woan, cathedral director of music until his retirement in 1982, said Paul was one of 90 boys auditioned that year.

He added: “He would have been required to sing a verse of Once In Royal David’s City, but he wouldn’t, at that stage, have been required to read music.

“Not reading music was not the reason he failed his audition as is often supposed.”

Their is another way which may be helpful if you have heavy luggage.
Most trains from Liverpool stop at Watford Junction, which is 17 miles before London Euston. From there a coach runs every 30 minutes to Heathrow Airport calling at all terminals. This is run in conjunction with Virgin Trains.

This way you avoid central London altogether plus not having to hire a car. If you want me to find anymore details feel free to ask.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

Yes. every 30 minutes in both directions. Are you going direct from Heathrow to Liverpool? Only problem I can see is if you are going for a certain train because then you will need flights and coach to run to time. Going back is easier because you have to get to Heathrow several hours before your flight leaves anyway.

I haven't booked any train tickets yet. Do you think I can just do it when I get there? Or I can just give myself several hours leeway. Do you know how long the coach takes ( approx)

I had thought about spending the night in London but I want to get up to L'pool and start the party so I am going straight up. Guess I should start researching train times.

Jim found a site that gives info all the way from Heathrow to L'pool using the bus to Watford. I'll be carrying on my luggage so if I arrive at LHR at 13:10 do you think I'll be able to catch the 15:10 bus from Terminal4 which will get me to Liverpool at 18:47? Sounds like the easiest way if the timing works.

I've been through customs and recovered my luggage in as little as 20 minutes and - at the most - just under an hour. There was little difference between the time in which I was processed and the time it took for them to process Fiona, who travels on a US passport. I think you should be fine for that coach, providing your plane isn't more than an hour late landing. :)
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Irene, The bus you mentioned, the 15.10, arrives at Watford Junction at 16.15 and the train leaves at 16.32, arriving in Liverpool at 18.47. It should be on time as this is before the rush hour.

I'd advise you to book your train tickets in advance if possible. Walk-on fares (pay on the day) can be expensive.

You will have 2 hours from when you land till bus leaves, so you should have plenty of time for customs etc. Long distance planes tend to be on time, short-haul ones are those that usually get delayed.

Re-read your post Audrey, The bus is from Heathrow to Watford Junction where I will transfer to a train up to Liverpool. The bus is about an hour and the train is about 2 1/2 plus waiting times. Oh it's going to be a looong day!

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
Thanks for posting the list of who is going to the concert and where they are sitting... even though I thought there was a list of who was going to be at the actual meet up. Maybe I'm delusional and confused. Wouldn't be the first time.

As part of my quest to find the best value for my money during this trip, I opened an account with Bank of America -- just to withdraw cash while I was in Liverpool (from Barclays). I was reassured there is no ATM fee for withdrawals overseas.

Also I opened a credit card account online with Capital One credit card. I think they are the only credit card that does not charge a foreign transaction fee. All the other cards charge from 1-3% for EVERY PURCHASE made overseas. I am definitely not paying that ridiculous charge.

I spoke to Capitol One and they do not charge this fee. I will reconfirm this fact right before I travel as they said "we do not charge a fee for charges made overseas, at this time."

Thanks Lisa. I never even considered the fact that CC companyies charged fees for overseas purchases. I guess that tells you a little about how closely I scrutinize my bill. Do you think there is enough time to to still get the card?

I just applied for it today and I expect they'll send it within a week. If you have any concerns just call them up. I'm sure they will want to get this card to us as fast as possible so we can rack up the charges.

I hate to tell you but all credit card companies charge a fee for foreign transactions. It is either listed seperately or included in the charge. It comes from Visa or Mastercard.

That is exactly what happens. Debit cards do the same thing. I have a Capital One CC and it says a foreign transaction fee will be charged.

There is a lawsuit going on now because this fee did not used to be disclosed on your bill. I am part of the class action and will probably see $10 or something like that when it is all said and done.

The fee was charged when I bought my Anfield tickets and on every foreign transaction I've ever made.

I don't see any way out of it. Do you Tony?

I'm not debating anyone on this. I've done my research and I spoke to a company rep today about this specifically at Capital One who told me there is no foreign transaction fee. I will keep asking them also -- if it comes down to it, I will absolutely not use my charge card overseas because I will be damned if I pay that fee.

I am owed a significant amount of money by my credit company as I took three foreign trips (one of two weeks) during 1996-2006; they will be refunding us about $250.

Currency conversion fees
By Kristin Arnold and Sheyna Steiner • Bankrate.com

Most credit card issuers charge currency conversion fees for foreign purchases made with their credit cards, debit and check cards, and ATM cash withdrawals. Over the course of your travels, that can add up to a significant increase in the cost of your vacation -- money you could save by picking the right credit card. The fees are twofold: Visa and MasterCard have a standard 1 percent charge on foreign purchases and the issuing bank adds another fee.

In the chart below, the percentage shown below each credit card issuer is the total of the fees: the amount charged by the issuer, plus the charge by Visa or MasterCard for a foreign purchase. For that 1 percent fee, Visa or MasterCard converts your foreign-currency purchase to U.S. dollars. All Visa or MasterCard cards carry that 1 percent charge. The credit card issuer or bank often charges an additional fee, usually 2 percent, which adds up to a 3 percent total charge on foreign purchases. Bankrate contacted several credit card issuers and all refused to explain the reason for the charge. The percentage posted under debit- and checking-card purchases is the charge assessed by both Visa or MasterCard and the credit card issuer or bank. A fee is also assessed by each card issuer and bank for ATM cash withdrawals. ATM charges vary for each card.

The table of major credit card companies and their currency-conversion-fee policies was correct as of December 2007. The data were originally collected by Bankrate researchers in October 2005. Write to editors@bankrate.com if you are aware of an update not shown here.

I am also owed money in this class action lawsuit. The basis was that the fee was not disclosed. It is now disclosed.

There is no Bank of America branch in Colorado where I can go to open an account. I would close it as soon as I returned anyway. I am still going with the AAA debit card which I will pre-load with $ and get the pounds from an ATM machine. I will get the maximum the few times I do use it as it will cost $3. That really is nothing in the big picture. I won't be using a lot of cash as I feel safer with the card from AAA. It will cost me $4.95 and I won't be using anything tied to my bank account.

I will call Capital One tomorrow and see what they say about foreign exchange transactions. If they don't charge them, I will use it. My two credit cards are low limit cards though, by my choice. I do not like credit cards. They can get you in trouble.
