Well I threw caution to the wind and finally did it. Just bought my plane tickets and paid for the hotel in London. Will be in Liverpool from May 30th to June 3rd then off to London until the 8th.

Will be staying at the Premier Inn, St. Helens South while in Liverpool and the Adare Hotel near Paddington Station while in London.

Posted Image

Tony I arrive on the 30th too but I have to leave London on the 4th or 5th. What time do you get in to London, Maybe we can take the same train up.

I agree about booking a later time to give yourself time to get there, and work in any delays that might happen.
Are you looking at Virgin? Or some other train?

As far as I know, no other companies offer direct trains from London to Liverpool.

I did say 'direct train', Jayne!

I mean, you could go out of St. Pancras to Derby, from Derby to Birmingham New Street, from Birmingham New Street to Shrewsbury, from Shrewsbury to Crewe and from Crewe to Warrington and Warrington to Liverpool if you wanted without using Virgin Trains... but I wouldn't recommend it! :P

I haven't been able to get a credit card to go through with Virgin and have made other arrangements to get my trains booked.

I can only have one bag on the flight from London to Edinburgh, so I am stuck with that. However, I am visiting Jayne's house. I will be there over two weeks and I'm not taking that many clothes with me.

At least I know where my passport is. Had a crisis in 2005 when going to Toronto. Passport was lost and state department was not happy with me. Got it sorted and have current passport.

Most of us in the UK don't even use metric measurements here, no matter how much they try to make us! ^_^

People still talk in pounds, ounces, miles, yards, feet, inches, gallons and pints no matter what the Government says we should be doing, even though adopting the metric system would make us fit in more with our European cousins. I guess many people don't want to give up a system they've used all their lives without a fight.

Believe me, there would be many people in the UK just as confused and frustrated as you are right now! ;)

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
I have a question. Forgive me if its been addressed before.

My husband wants to buy a BritRail England Flexipass. He says that we will be able to get on a train to London/Liverpool and back...with that pass. If you buy a first class rail pass...do you get first class seats? And do you have to reserve the seats anyway?

He also said that with the BritRail England Flexipass we get a discount on the Eurostar to Paris.

We are a bit confused. Virgin Trains don't seem to take this pass. In fact Virgin trains don't seem to be taking reservations from outside of the UK at the moment. Although on their website, they said they have a deal in connection with Eurostar.

Does anyone know anything at all about this pass? Is it a good idea? We will have 3 travel days by train.

Sorry, I know this was more than a question. I would appreciate any and all info regarding this. THANKS SO MUCH.

Hey just had a great idea. Anyone want to chip in and rent a car from London to Liverpool and back. If several of us go in on it it will be a lot cheaper than taking the train and then we have transport in Liverpool (although I'm not sure I'm brave enough to drive on the city streets). Just an idea.

Jayne any idea on the meet-up venue yet?

Irene - even 'I' wont drive through Liverpool city centre itself :o done it millions of times but it is quite scary esp the one-way sysytems :hmm: but I do know all the different areas around (ok by looking for signs) but it is a mass maze - just ask Dani what I was like lol :P :P thing is though from London to Liverpool its a 4 hour drive (at least) - 2 1/2 hour train journey ;)

if people want to drive around Liverpool make sure you have a sat-nav and good maps ;)

still not chosen a good venue for us all :( I'm in Liverpool this week so will defo get one ;) all those who want to meet up will need to PM me for all the details ;) I will tell people when found the venue ok :D

You don't need to travel first class. The Cheapest London to Liverpool return ticket is £62.60, that's a saver and you have to specify what time trains you will be getting in advance.

If you travel by National Express coach then the cheapest London to Liverpool return journey is £27.50, it's amendable but non-refundable, the higher price is £35.50, it's amendable and refundable (if you're traveling out on a Friday).

For any other day but a Friday, the cheapest return fare London to Liverpool is £24 (Economy Apex Return, amendable, non-refundable), next is £27.50 (Standard Advance Return, amendable, non-refundable), then £31.50 (Economy Return, amendable, refundable), then £35.50 (Standard Advance Return).

Journeys by coach take twice as long as train, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

I feel the same way about first class, Colin. It is not necessary and it makes the train much cheaper. I don't want to spend the time on a coach, so I will take a train.

I must admit I'm shocked at the price of train tickets these days. I've just been looking at various websites to see if I could find any tickets for you people going to Liverpool, but cheapest I could find was £62.60. I can't even find the cheap tickets Colin mentioned!

What I did find though is cheap bus travel. Although the bookings only go as far as 18th May I found a ticket for £11 return! £10 to Liverpool and £1 back. It may be worth a look on this site, www.megabus.com in a week or so's time.

The bus leaves London at 15.30 arr. Liverpool at 20.15. Return to London is depart Liverpool 08.30 arriving London at 14.00

Yes the journey takes a long time, 5.5 hours, but the savings can make it worth while.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

And I think it won't get cheaper as so many people will be heading towards Liverpool that weekend. Hopefully they will put on more trains or carriages but that may not be possible. I've given up on the trains now.

The chances of extra trains or carriages is, should think, zero. Those days are long gone. There simply isn't any spare stock around.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
Its not about first class for me. I just want to figure out what I need to do. I'm not that worried about it. Going by coach (or bus, as I figured out that meant) is not an option for me. The extra money spent on train travel is worth the couple of hours less that I don't have to travel that day.
I'm sure it will work out...(thats me being optimistic...not exactly one of my more shining traits ^_^ )

I can't even find the cheap tickets Colin mentioned!

Here you are http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/index.cfm

Those cheap tickets I mentioned are National Express Coach, not trains. The Coaches are always cheaper then the trains.

Even though it does take more then twice as long as the train, they have a compulsory half hour stop half way at a motorway service for people to stretch their legs or to buy a meal. Incidentally, coaches these days have an onboard TV screen and toilets at the rear of the coach, and some have a trolley service just like on an aeroplane.

Sorry Colin I mis-read it. Last time I went by train to Liverpool was 2 years ago. The saver return was about £45, but a single was £12.50! So I bought 2 singles for £25. This was a Virgin advance. That's why I'm surprised fares have gone up so much in last 2 years.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

Believe me, there would be many people in the UK just as confused and frustrated as you are right now! ;)

That is so good to know! It makes me feel a lot less ignorant.

You guys will have the time of your lives!!! And meeting each other will be the greatest memory of all... HAVE FUN EVERYONE!!! Wish I was joining ya, but definately next time... !

Colin, I use National Express a lot. The drivers never take a break to let you off for food or a walk. There is a toilet on board so they don't need to. They do stop at service station in Birmingham but only to change driver and they tell you not to leave the coach.

Things must have changed then, because the last time I used a coach (many years ago) they let us off for half an hour, although I don't seem to remember them changing drivers.

It varies amongst drivers and time.I have used megabus from Edinburgh to London a few times and i think only twice have they let us out for a wee bit. Toilet break and quick stretch of the legs and sometimes a change of drivers. Its not really maximum comfort but if you are ony paying between £1-£10 for a single (I've never paid more) then thats what you get.I kind of enjoy it though although maybe not at the time.

yay. I am so excited although now one slight issue. I dunno if I should come down the 29th or 30th May now. I'm tempted by the 29th because then can go to the Cavern and see the Beatles tribute band but only got accomodation booked from 30th. I'll be leaving the 2nd and i think now may go by coach to London to do all that and catch up with London folk and see Linda's thing obviously.

argh to much planning. Its messing with my poor head

I prefer the train. Faster, more space, onboard food and being able to walk around. Plus the free music.

I don't think anyone has said they prefer the bus, but have chosen the bus because the train is so expensive. £150 return for one person is a bit much.

Yeah to freaking right. It can be such a rip off getting a train and no way in hell am I gonna pay over £100 or whatever when I could pay at max £10 on a bus to get to London. Often its even cheaper than when I get the train to Liverpool

Well...after flying for what could be between 10-12 hours...getting on a bus (for how long? 5+ hours??) is NOT an option. Some things are worth paying for...but thats just *my* opinion. I suppose if I was living in London, or some other place in the UK...and taking a trip to Liverpool, then I might think a bus was OK. I guess its all a matter of where you are coming from. If I can shave a few hours off my travel time...I'm all for it.

The breaks are usually for the driver so that he or she doesn't exceed the lawful maximum driving time and not the passengers, so - if they were changing drivers - there would be no need to keep the coach stationary for long whereas if you're keeping the same driver, you'll be at a stand for about half an hour.

I choose not to travel by coach if I can really help it, but for those on a tight budget, coaches are really handy.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I know, but it is always a pleasant surprise when they let us out for a stretch and that does vary on the driver you are with and time if they do give us a break
