I'm slightly confused because both of these are "hop on" tours....but you liked the "Original" one better? What is the underground pass? Thanks, Tony! |

Can somebody explain the Oyster ticket to me and tell me if it's best when getting around London--rather than a visitor's pass. I think when I arrive on May 23, I just need to get to my hotel and then will need to get to the Stonehenge tour pick up site (if they don't pick me up at the hotel) on May 24. Then on May 25, I need to get to Gatwick. I think the Gatwick Express leaves from Victoria, correct? |

If they aren't available yet then I guess you will have to wait. I think Dani said that you can only book Virgin Trains 6 weeks in advance. However, I book through www.thetrainline.co.uk and have seen that I can now book trains for Liverpool but as I don't know exactly how I am getting there I havent booked tickets yet. You may want to try that site as that allows you 3 months in advance. |

For some reason, the other site says that all of my credit cards are declined and I don't know why. The other train site says that I can book a train, but without a reservation. Do I need a reservation? I can't figure out why it won't take my credit cards and I don't know who to call. |

Well I am not travelling to Liverpool from London. Assuming you are, I think its Virgin Trains. So you might want to look up their number online if you want to speak to someone. I'm not sure what cards you are trying to use but most sites take the most used ones here like Mastercard/Visa Maestro etc. |

I will be going from Edinburgh to Liverpool on May 29. The sites will let me make a reservation, but not a seat assignment. I don't know if I need one. I was using both Visa and Mastercard on www.trainline.co.uk and it wouldn't take either one. No good reason either. I am not even close to the limit on either one. I will try tomorrow. No patience for it tonight. |

Linda ~ Call your credit card company and tell them you are trying to charge something in the UK. Sometimes it just a security issue but it doesn't say that. I also let my card I'm using know when I'm doing a lot of traveling. |

From California, for that number I'd have to dial; 011 - 44 - 8457 222 333. 011 - to make it an 'international' call 44 - the country code for the UK and then the UK telephone number, but dropping the '0' at the front of the number. Also, I think Judy is spot on about your CC's - as a security measure, some companies block international transactions without prior notification. Give them a call and explain your problems. I would also ensure that you have seat reservations on all trains you travel on - and all long distance trains accept reservations. You may not be able to reserve this long in advance, though. If you can't, then find out how long in advance you can do it and then come back on that day exactly, to get in before everyone else. |

You might not need a seat reservation if you're travelling on a Thursday; it's usually for Fridays that they recommend making a seat reservation, because everyone’s travelling home for the weekend. |

March 14 is the day I can make the reservation. Also called my CC company and they did not decline the transaction. They said it was at the website's end. I will do this by telephone on Friday. Thanks for the assistance. Lauren says we don't need seat reservations for June 2 from Liverpool to London, but I'm thinking after this big even we do? |

It's up to you whether you reserve seats on any of your trains, Linda, but if you don't reserve seats then the worst that will happen is you standing on a train from Edinburgh to Liverpool or from Liverpool to London - if you do reserve seats then the worst that can happen is having a reserved seat in a half-empty train. Most advance (cheaper) bookings require you to book a seat anyway.

I'm going to London on June 2. Andy, I've decided that I do not want to stand on trains, so I am waiting until March 14 and calling Virgin again. The kind lady told me that is when I can book a reserved seat for that leg and maybe she will tell me when I can do the one for Liverpool to London. Today she said she couldn't tell me about June trains yet. I don't quite know the difference between a May29 train and a June 2 train. The site says you can book the June 2 train today, but she couldn't tell me when the reserved seats will be released. Rose, I found it much easier on the phone and I know now to immediately say "AGENT". Jayne, I'm not getting in the way of the meet up, am I/ I thought it was on Sunday. I used to go by first class from London to Liverpool and I remember all the people in the cheap seats dashing for the trains. I also remember not be allowed on a train from York to London for hours because there were no seats. Do they overbook the trains? I'm also concerned about British Airways only allowing me one bag on the flight from London to Edinburgh. I had wanted to take two smaller bags, but now I will have to take one large one. I've also decided that Lady Paulie is going to the kennel for this long of a trip. Since she no longer has Sir Abbey, I don't want her home alone that long. The cat sitter doesn't spend enough time and the kennel is actually $1 cheaper a day. Once a week, I will give her the VIP treatment! |

The National Rail site should have all of the information from each of the Train Operating Companies all on one site, including timetables, fares & offers. It's always the best starting point when planning a trip in the UK. Once the National Rail site has told you which trains you need, you can always look up the website of the Train Company it tells you you need to travel with and see if they have any exclusive offers - a bit like looking up flights on a site like expedia and then checking the sites of the individual airlines to see if they will beat the expedia price - it doesn't often happen, but sometimes you strike lucky. Linda - the May 29th and June 2nd trains are likely to be run by different companies, which is why they have different reservation/booking policies. They never oversell trains seats and reservations, but they sell unlimited 'open' and tickets meaning that people can join any train. If you have a reservation, though, you're guaranteed a seat over people with those kind of tickets and trains will keep on accepting people until you cannot physically fit any more people onto the service. |

It very much depends on when you're travelling. Like I said earlier on in the thread, it can't hurt to reserve a seat. The population of the UK is rising all the time and trains are getting visibly busier than they were even a couple of years ago. If you've reserved a seat, you're guaranteed it - but if you haven't reserved, you really do risk standing up for hours on end. A ticket doesn't guarantee you a seat, but a reservation does.

Contact a representitive from your credit card company and ask them if those charges were authorised - if they were then contact Virgin Trains, explain the situation, and ask them to refund one of them. |

I will do that if they actually post. Both pending charges say Virgin Trains, but I never got an email from any of the sites I was trying to book on. I also want a reserved seat, so I will call Virgin on Friday--since that is the day they told me that I can get a reserved seat. |

Pfft Jayne I want to bring something over for your parents so forget about it if you won't tell me I'll guess. Sorry we're coming in at daft o'clock in the morning, but if you think you'll feel groggy just imagine how the Lisa duo will feel with 8 hours of jet lag hitting us in the head.  |

I got the double hotel rooms straightened out. I no longer have a hotel room in both Liverpool and London for June 2--I just have one in Liverpool. So, the tour is on, Jayne! I also booked my Stonehenge tour for May 24. At least I got to book it in US $. The Virgin charges still haven't dropped off, Tony. The pending charges show a date of March 9. I hope they are gone in the morning, as Virgin said I could get a seat reservation tomorrow. |

Question about the concert tickets: I was re-reading the original email from "seezz3.com" that said we will be mailed details about receiving the tickets within four weeks of the event. So I did a little investigating and I guess "See Tickets" is the place that will let us know. I tried to email them but only got an automated response. I'm afraid they may not make it to my home before I leave for England. Anyone else concerned about this?

I'm a bit concerned...We aren't leaving until the 28th of May...so I'm hoping they will get to us by then. But only 4 weeks before the concert...is a bit scary.

I'm sorry to say that, due to circumstances beyond my control, it now appears unlikely that I will be able to make the trip to Liverpool. It was already going to be a tight squeeze financially, after all the life changes I've had to deal with during the past 9 months and then there was the $350 trip to the animal ER last Saturday night. Tonight, I got a phone call from one of my sisters that my aunt (my late mom's sister) was killed in a car accident yesterday. I'm in the process of trying to find a last-minute plane ticket that won't take every last penny I have. I just can't believe the terrible karma that keeps following me around. I'm so sad that I won't get to meet everyone. Anyone need a ticket for the concert or for the National Trust tour? |

(((Beverly))) - I'm so very sorry that you won't be coming to Liverpool and am even more sorry to hear the news about your aunt - my deepest sympathies to you and your family. We'll just have to make the Southern California meet-up something to remember for you. |

Beverly, I am so sorry. As for the tickets, I have emailed See Tickets. First I got the automated response and then a real one. They said if they can't get them here by May 22, arrangements will be made to pick them up at the venue beginning at 5.00 on the day of the concert. That timing doesn't help those who are planning on camping out or waiting in line to get in as that is the concert start time. On another aspect of this, this train thing is getting quite annoying. Virgin had told me that I could book a ticket today. I call them. The girl takes me through the entire deal and tells me I have a reserved seat on the 11.52 from Edinburgh. All CCs decline so she can't book. I call the credit card company and they tell me they will approve the charge if I make it right then. They also tell me that they have no declines and they show up immediately. :hmm: Call Virgin back. This person won't book any train for me. Tells me to call back in 2 to 3 weeks. I don't know what is going on and I'm afraid I will be in Edinburgh, sleeping on the streets. Will send Tony a PM about this CC issue tomorrow. What's the deal with Virgin and reservations. First, I was told the earlier train had no reserved seats available, but the 11.52 did. Then when I call back, I'm told no reserved seats are yet available? I'm totally confused.

Well I threw caution to the wind and finally did it. Just bought my plane tickets and paid for the hotel in London. Will be in Liverpool from May 30th to June 3rd then off to London until the 8th. Will be staying at the Premier Inn, St. Helens South while in Liverpool and the Adare Hotel near Paddington Station while in London.
