A few questions:

Which is better?

Fly to London and take a train from London to Liverpool

or

Fly to Manchester and use public transportation to Liverpool?

Either way, I'm staying in Liverpool, I just don't know which one is a better deal... :hmm:

well it would be cheaper and quicker getting from Manchester to Liverpool London to Liverpool but it all depends on what the cheapest flight you can get is.Check out train prices and then work out plane fares and what ever works out best that is what I'd go for

Where is the Mull of Kintyre? :giggle:

You won't get there without a car (unless you've got a helicopter of course). It doesn't look far but it's about 100 miles from Oban from what I remember. It will take a lot of time out of your schedule.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=17...59500&ay=606500

So, is this in the lowlands? And here's another weird question; what exactly IS the "Mull of Kintyre?" Is it just an area? A town? :sweet:

There's also a lovely piece on Wiki about The Mull Of Kintyre Test - and, no, it's not a quiz about Paul's solo work...

Very good info! I've now learned alot; especially after visiting many other websites about this area. It's funny to read things like "the mist that rolls in from the sea" and such that Paul used in his song. It seems like quite a remote but beautiful area. Don't know if actually going there is realistic, but it would be something to see if one had a lot of time!

Jayne provided a map of Beatles Attractions that you can get to by riding the Saveaway bus tickets.

Does the Magical Mystery Tour take you to these same places?

I'm going to Edinburgh before Liverpool. Liverpool from May 29-for five nights. I think that has me checking out the morning of June 3. Right now. I plan on spending about two days in London before going to Edinburgh and then two days after the concert. Have to see the Linda McCartney exhibit. Probably flying back June 4 or 5.

I do the MMT on May 31, Jillian.

Oh how I wish I could extend this trip to more than a loing weekend. the Linda exhibit might have to be in the morning before my flight home. Still I'm thrilled to have what I can get!!!

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
We are flying into London on Friday, May 30th.
Taking a train to Liverpool, staying until June 3rd.
Taking a train to Paris.
Leaving Paris June 6th to London.
Staying in London June 6th through June 11th.

I have booked the National Trust tour for Saturday May 31st, 10am.
I hope to book a MMT...but am having no luck receiving a reply about tickets.
I am also hoping to see Lindas exhibit on the last day...June 7th.

A lot is still up in the air. London is still pretty much open. Any 'must dos' for London?

If you can just send him a little email Heidi that your still planning so he knows ;)

when speaking to him last night, he was on about the tours and contacts he as got

now he said to me last night he knows the people who do the MMT tours AND if there was enough people he could get the bus for everyone to go on it at a time of their choice AND where they wanted to go (ie I dont think the MMT goes to the airport so therefore might be possible to go there - would just have to see regarding security there)

it is up to you all

I have already arranged my own tours (sorry I cant take you all  would love too but not everyone will get in a 17 seater minibus :( )

Just had my friend round who does tours

someone as sent him an email (he couldn't remember name) regarding his tours and he sent one back

can they please email him back if wanna know more

That would've been me, Jayne!

Please thank him for his email and I will let him know (when I know) what I'm doing....I'm still in the early planning stages!

Thanks! ;)

Done! B)

Can anyone here recommend a place where I can get a good map of the Northwest of England? I want to get a paper one, and I dont' have the ability to print.

ALSO:

We want to go explore more than just Liverpool, we're thinking Southport and its surroundings (want to take more photos). Can anyone help me on that?

A to Z or Ordnance Survey.

A to Z maps

Ordnance Survey, just click on the little dot for Liverpool and you will get a list of maps to the right.

My friend and I are thinking of just taking a day trip to London. Where should I go when I'm there?

A day trip?

Well, there's not a huge amount you can do in a day, but I'd say that one day could easily include;

Houses Of Parliament/Big Ben
Westminster Abbey
The London Eye
Thames River Cruise
London Tour Bus to see the other sights
Buckingham Palace
Picnic lunch in Green Park
Dinner & West End show (book it a few days in advance on www.lastminute.com for a bargain)

You should be able to do that in one day, but you'll need at least £125 per person to really enjoy the day.

If you had more than one day, then there are some wonderful free museums here and, if you're on a limited budget, you could always head for those instead of the other more expensive stuff I've suggested. :)
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Yep. London is the most expensive city I've ever been to, besides New York.

If you've never done it before, you have to "go with the flow" and not think about it.

Honestly...so many places to go...people to see...things to do. I don't know where to start. I feel like I'm going to miss the 'party', too.
Hopefully I will figure it all out (with all the help here) before June. ^_^

It's a big trip to plan, isn't it?

I'm only doing Liverpool on this trip, simply because I can't get the time off from work. Makes it a bit easier to figure things out. My husband has never been to England, so he and I will probably do an extended visit another time.

Don't worry. It'll all "come together" in the end. ;)

This is a very expensive trip....much more than I thought it was going to be! :hmm:

The airfare will cost the same whether I'm there for 3 days or 2 weeks! It's such a long trip from California & I can't see going all that way for only a week, so I'm going for the 2 weeks.

We plan on doing London, Liverpool, and Scotland. It has been fun but very exhausting trying to look up accomodations, flights, day-tours, etc. etc. I want to make the best of my time and money, so it takes lots of time & research!

Thanks to Jayne, Dani, Andy, Lisa, Colin and others who have given advice and guidance to us westerners! It'll all work out in the end, even if I have to take out a second mortgage! :giggle: :boogie:

You don't have to spend that much, I suspect that's only if you want souvenirs or want to dine in expensive restaurants.

It is possible to tour London on budget, I done it many years ago (before the birth of Internet) and I hardly paid anything except to go in museums (the musuems are free now) and the odd (cheap) souvenir.

Do they still do Capital Cards? If they do then they're good value, the last time I went to London was 1989 and I remember getting a Capital Card to include Heathrow.

Hyde Park is a nice park to walk through and there's the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum on or very near Exhibition Road, you might need all day for the Science Museum because it's quite big, has many floors. When I was there it was possible to walk from the Science Museum to the Natural History Museum without leaving the building, I don't know if you can still do that now.

If you're feeling fit then you can walk through the parks from Hyde Park, through Green Park, past Buckingham Palace and through St. James Park, that will bring you out by Big Ben and Westminster Bridge, I done it and it's a bit of a walk but if you're fit, you can do it.

The airlines and tour companies usually have Fly/Drive packages. Look them up. If you don't want to book one they can at least give you some good information on itinerarys and value places to stay.

London is expensive but it doesn't have to be. Most of the sites are free. They speak English there so the tube is easy to figure out :P and there are lots of low cost places to eat. Mind you everything is still about double the cost of what we are used to paying but it can be done on a budget.

Everyone needs to remember that London is one of the most popular tourist places in the world so you don't need to just rely on advice from here to make the most of your trip.

Go to Fodors.com, Frommers.com, Trip Advisor.com, and several other sites online to get information -- plus I would bet a little research on the internet can get you a lot of good information on how to tour London inexpensively.

I like the Lonely Planet guides as well, and getting travel guides from the library for research and even going to AAA for info.

About the prices, remember that the exchange rate for all of Europe vs. the U.S. is the worst it's ever been. The dollar is so bad that going anywhere in Europe is hugely expensive. One of the best ways to economize is: don't take tours (go places yourself on foot), find inexpensive places to eat, don't pick up tons of souvenirs, try to find the lowest cost lodgings you can deal with.

I'm not just relying on advice here (although everyone has been very generous and helpful with their time and knowledge.)
We have endless books and online sites all doing overtime.
I guess I just get overwhelmed with the details.
Stuff just seems to keep going round my head all the time! :buz:
