The past week has been very wild across much of the midwest. A tornado went through my folks town, Lansing, IL. Just came back from their house and everyone is okay. Lots of huge trees downed.

On a side note my sister-in-law is in from Temeculah, CA. Her kids are loving our wild weather. Last night we did a boat cruise off of Navy Pier for the weekly fireworks show and luckily made it back to port just in time before last nights' storm. But today was even worse. Weatherman says another day and a half of this humidity crap and then we'll get a nice flow of autumnal air from Canada. (Yeah!)

((John)) I know what you mean. We've had so much water and our property has water around it. We're holding our breathe we don't get any water in the basement. My husband thinks he found the problem outside. I can't remember the last time we had this much rain!

PEACE and love to my friends, Judy

Temeculah, huh? My boyfriend has friends who live near there. Being from the same state, and having had only about 2" of rain this year and none so far during our monsoonal times, I can very much understand why your sister-in-law would be enjoying it. If only it weren't so dangerous. My word of caution to you all over there, when you hear the storm warnings coming near your area take every precaution to get you and your family to safety. Don't wait until the last minute.

Hey everyone, thanks for the how do's. Cathy you know what bugs me. Old farts are concerned with the weather. Oh well if the shoe fits I must wear it. I know there is massive flooding in Ohio and I believe Jana in Oklahoma has been getting it all summer. Now its our turn. Sorry about your two inches all year. Since last Thursday night thru our second wave tonight we're at well over 8 inches in our neighborhood and up north towards Wisconsin they are working on 12 to 16 inches. Round 3 is shaping up in Iowa on the radar now, we'll probably get hit a little after midnight.

Got to find a way to divert this stuff out to you guys or to the Aussies down under.

John just start sending it bucket by bucket. Hopefully you won't get any tornadoes out of this. We have had years where we get rain in sheets, like 3" in less than an hour, so I know how bad it can get. Just be careful out there.

Stay safe. It's been a dangerous year for weather all around the world. Yesterday was our first day of sunshine in a month and then it rained last night.

That was Lissa's avatar that is still on pm.com. I was going to do the same thing and think I still will.

If I remember correctly she used to change it according to the seasons. There was one with snow and one for summer or spring.

You know what, it really does. There was one with the Eiffel Tower in the background and her in the beret, it might as well have been a picture.

There are always degrees. (no pun intended)

I have no time for people who think it's a bit too hot or a bit too cold. Get a real problem. Be glad you're alive to see it.

But when it's an issue of extreme weather threating life and limb and home, then I think people can be forgiven for being concerned about it.

I'm hoping everyone who has been hit by these storms is okay. We were nearly under water ourselves. Tropical Storm Erin has sure played havoc with all of us...to have amounted to so little in the first place! We are all still cleaning up her mess here.....and it looks like we will be expecting more rain tomorrow.

Apologies to John for changing the subject.

Apology accepted, the tangent was more interesting anyway. I wish someone had her avatar of her as a little child playing the piano. That was my favorite.

Round three is starting outside so I'll be shutting down the computer. I'm with ya Bill it was a lame thread to start but in my 47 years there hasn't been a whole week of weather like this that I remember. I trust that it won't be what I'll remember about this week though. The side track was therapeutic.

Hey, you don't think that's Lissa up there stirring up things and I'm blessed with a front row seat? :o

Hey, I never said that!

I was recognising that your concern goes a bit beyond the run-of-the-mill complaining about the weather. :sweet:

No Bill, John has a good complaint. Usually in the Midwest we don't see much rain in August. And we've had buckets of it nonstop. Our grounds are so water logged. Our sump pumps (that's4) are constantly going off.We have 2 swells of water outside the front door which was over flowing a wall causing the water to go in the basement by the sump pits. We had to take the covers off 2 drains so the water could go down. The mulch would get over the screens and stop the water. Hopefully we have the problem corrected. And more rain today!!!!!

PEACE and love to my friends, Judy

Fortunately we didn't get the additional couple of inches of rain yesterday that they predicted.

Our river is cresting here today and I don't remember it EVER being this bad in my many years of living here.

We lucked out~no water in the basement that the sump pump couldn't handle. Our roads are flooded in places but we've been able to get around. Our lake here at the house flooded over its banks and we had fish swimming around in our yard! :o
But the sun is out and NO MORE RAIN!!

... at least until Wednesday <_<
And in the end...The love you take..Is equal to the love you make.

My parents got 5 inches of rain Thursday evening. My sister and I have both explained to them what Bill is saying--a little water in the basement, which they had, is nothing compared to the problems of the world. They don't have a sump pump and their home is not in danger. They have had 20 inches of rain and that is a record for August.

I also realize my parents are 83 and little things really bother people that age.

And I also wish somebody had the avatar of Lissa playing the piano as a little girl.

It's been raining here for about a month. We had 3 typhoons in 2 weeks. Just before I went to the Internet cafe to talk to you all for the first time since Lissa's passing the rain stopped and I could see through the clouds for the first time in the longest time. As soon as I got home it started raining again. I can't see that as just a coincidence.

Astronomers Puzzled by Cosmic Black Hole
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer
Friday, August 24, 2007

WASHINGTON - Astronomers have stumbled upon a tremendous hole in the universe. That's got them scratching their heads about what's just not there. The cosmic blank spot has no stray stars, no galaxies, no sucking black holes, not even mysterious dark matter. It is 1 billion light years across of nothing. That's an expanse of nearly 6 billion trillion miles of emptiness, a University of Minnesota team announced Thursday.

I live in the Chicago area as well, and boy, we got dumped on! In West Chicago, a roof collapsed because of the strong winds!!! :o :o :o The sirens were going off where I live. The local middle school football practice field was a duck pond!!!   I saw a picture of a road in Fox Lake and if you didn't see the road signs, you would've thought it was the Fox river! I don't live where there are big trees, but in a park near downtown, there were trees and branches down everywhere! On all 11 Metra train lines, there were crossing gates pulled from signal towers! In Bartlett, a whole train signal tower got blown off by the force of the wind! But we're all okay. No deaths at all.

Now what are we going to do about all the mosquitoes that are breeding in the water that's everywhere! We can barely set foot out of our house without getting attacked.

Sometimes John you are all wet.

At least I've progressed to 'sometimes' in your eyes. :D

Andy, Linda thanks too for your concern.

We're 4 days on now and Interstate 94 is still closed eastbound 1 mile up the road. All traffic is being diverted off the roadway at "our" exit and traffic around town is a royal pain. Of course I'm only venting, life this week has made many an issue seem so inconsequential. Still you would think they could have figured out a way to get the highway open again by now.

As for the impending onslaught of mosquitoes

When I was in Iowa August 6-11, they had almost 10 inches of rain at my parent's house. August 23, they got another 5 inches of rain, bringing the month's total to over 20 inches. All kinds of roads are closed around them, too. They got about an inch of water in their basement. I think my mother is finally convinced that since she has a house that hasn't slid into a sink hole, still has a roof, etc., she should consider herself lucky.
