I understand Lissa didn't like being photographed.  But having a pic is how I cope with loss and grief.  It may be weird, but that's how I get thru these things.

Doesn't anyone have a recent pic of her?  I understand it not being posted here, & I ABSOLUTELY PROMISE, SWEAR to NEVER, EVER post it ANYWHERE, but please, couldn't someone with a kind & understanding heart please PM me one?  I so need one to help me deal with this.

I don't mean to sound callous, but there's a fine line between grief and self indulgence. If Lissa had wanted us to have photos of her, she would have posted them herself. The fact that she didn't tells us all we need to know. The best way to honour her memory is to respect her wishes.

The matter is closed, in fact it was never opened, as far as I am concerned.

I understand how you feel Laura. I, too, would have liked a picture. However, it seems that some things are not meant to be. Lissa certainly made it clear during her time at this forum that she was not about to post a picture of herself. From what I've read of her in this thread, that seems to be a pattern that held true in all aspects of her life. And so, I will always think of her as a cartoon character in New York, with reddish-brown hair and big eyes, and two penguins standing at her side. I can only imagine that this is what she would have preferred.

Where did the penguins part come into Lissa story? i do remember the story of her signing her friends cast and draw a blinded penguin humping a bewildered bear, too funny.

Reading those very heartwrenching, tear filled tributes made me realize that this accident really did happen and that there really was not a cruel joke played on the world.  Lissa really is gone.  This really does show you how short and important life can be.  We really do need to love one another and live each minute as if we had to.  Fighting each other is only doing ourselves harm.  We need to overlook the hurts and anguish we have put on each other and get over it, get on with living life and loving one another.

Wouldn't it be great if that were her legacy? Instead of music, intelligence and humour, what if her greatest impact is inspiring others to treat people with respect and love? I can't think of a better tribute.

Thank you Adilah. I think we have seen all to recently that these are words that we should all live by. From what I have read on Lissa, it appears that she learned the true meaning of these words and did try to live them.

I, too wondered and tried to imagine what her posts would have been like when Pavarotti died and I also wondered what she would have said about the 9/11 anniversary.

I know what you mean, Audrey. I do not feel sad or depressed when I think of Lissa, but I do think about her nearly everyday. Usually I'll see or here something that reminds me of Lissa and I can't help but smile. She was special; I sometimes think this earth was too good for someone like her.

I listen to classical music a lot, so she's constantly on my mind. I'm wondering... could she play this piece? Did she like this composer? Would she have preferred a different instrument here? I listen to Chopin and smile, she didn't like him, I love him, but I never even tried to argue with her, she would have simply kicked my arse. I think I have just named her only flaw, how can one not like Chopin :P

As Lissa herself had it as her avatar for quite a while, I would hope that there would be no problems sharing it with the forum once more. It's nice to have a photo as a reminder (not that we need reminding) - and it's nice to see that particular picture again.

Missing you Lissa. I've gone way too long without being cut down by some witty, scathing remark from you. -_-

I have always listened to classical music and so have my children and now my grandchildren listen to it. Lissa gave me a wider range of music to listen to plus i do listen to her music just about everyday, to help ease missing her and honoring her life. Listening to Lissa play the piano makes me feel nearer in my heart.

Andy, Thank you for the picture.

I was frequently visiting the classical music section of the local Border's store, trying to find a clue to Lissa's identity and musicianship long before we lost her.

I recalled Reverend Dave mentioning he had seen her play with Yo Yo Ma, and I looked over as many of his albums as I could, trying to figure out if there was a recording of her somewhere.

Although I am not a big fan of classical music, I will never think of Mozart or any of them, for that matter, without being reminded of Lissa.

I'm very pleased to see the avatar photo she had used, again. Thank you, Andy! That was one image of her that she didn't mind sharing with us; it shows the sweet side of a remarkable young woman. She'll never be forgotten by any of us whose lives she touched.

Thanks for reposting that old avatar of Lissa's, I didn't realize that was actually a photo of her until recently. I've always listened to and loved classical music - I always enjoyed talking about it with her, even when she kicked my ass at it, which was always - but I probably won't listen to Mozart again without thinking at least a little bit of Lissa. :sweet:

Lissa

It is my very sad duty to tell you all that Lissa, known here as mozart8mytoe, passed away on Monday 20th August, 2007.

Lissa was in China to visit her daughter. On Thursday morning her car collided with a local bus on a small highway in Hunan. Because of recent weather conditions no one noticed the accident until the next bus came through Friday afternoon. Lissa and 4 to 7 bus passengers were evacuated to a trauma facility in Hengyang that evening. Her driver as well as the bus driver and 22 or more passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Reverend Dave was able to visit her at the hospital Sunday afternoon. By then she'd been transferred to a more advanced hospital in Chengsha and had multiple surgeries to repair her duodenum and cecum, remove most of her ileum and descending colon and they did a peritoneal lavage. They also had to amputate her right leg just above the knee. When he saw her she was alert and understood her situation. She asked Dave to contact her family and joked that she ''always wanted some symmetry, but this is ridiculous'' (because of her left toe).

Her father and sister were able to visit her on Monday. She passed away Monday night. The official cause of death was peritonitis caused by trauma.

I know that everyone here is probably in shock, I know that I am. Lissa was smart, wickedly funny and it was a real pleasure and privilege to know her. I can’t believe I’m using the word ’was’ about her. My heart also goes out to her newly adopted daughter who found a mother and then had her taken away. Life is so very cruel.

I’d like to thank Reverend Dave for informing us. He is available to contact for anyone who would like to talk about this or has any questions. You can contact him at harvardbushiban@yahoo.com or by phone on +8869-2418-9505. He will be able to reply to e-mails a lot easier than PMs here.

Of course, if anyone would like to talk to me about this, then they’re very welcome, but I don’t have any more information than is in the statement above.

With sympathy and condolences to you all,

Andrew Sweeney

Isn't that something? Mozart is one of the most famous composers all over the world, yet when some of us see that name we think of her before him.

Yes, according to Lissa, that was her.

Thanks, Andy. This was thoughtful of you. We all grieve in different ways, and thus need different "props"--for lack of a better word--to help us. I don't know why I'm this way, but I always have been. In an earlier era, before photography, people had their portrait painted. Tho some no doubt did it for ego, most did it for both loved ones left behind, and future generations to know they once existed. A photo is really a modern extension of this. And, I think, a much nicer way to remember someone than a cold piece of rock, with just the basic stats.

Thank-you too, to those of you who understood this was a cry of pain--not selfishness. I appreciate that understanding as well. More than you'll know.

Oh my gosh.

This is so terribly sad, I don't even know what to say.

Why is it that the good people always have the least time on earth? I only briefly had a few chats with Moz but the ones we shared were sheer joy.

I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to respond to this and I feel kind of awkward, but I don't care. This is a horrible tragedy... I can't even explain how I feel. I feel so bad for her family.

May she rest in peace up there. Save a spot for the rest of us.

Very well. Thank you for asking. It took months to arrange the surgery and get the visas and the medical fees were enough to fund a small nation's economy, but the end result is that she's healthier now than she's ever been.

I thank God for the French and Indian doctors in the American hospital who gave my sister a new life, and for Lissa who saved me from insanity while waiting. It wasn't on CNN, but international co-operation really can change lives.

Thank you. I'm sure Lissa & Nazli would have been great friends. There's no reason for her story to be on American television since there would be no points for any political party to score. Apparently "human interest" is boring but death and corruption sell merchandise. More's the pity.

I hardly knew her when we went to New York. She knew the hospital from my comments here and told me it was near her home. She suggested we meet for vodka and cookies, in the interest of national security, if I had some available time. I told her I don't drink vodka and she said she didn't eat cookies so it all balanced out. The kindness she showed in opening her home and city to a casual acquaintance and a complete stranger is exactly what this world needs more.

That is funny. No vodka for you and no cookies for Lissa.

I think we're healing. More humor added to the story.

And you are right about this is what the world needs more of.

I've been asked by surviving members of the Mona Lissa Jazz Ensemble to join them in recording their first CD. They want to use existing recordings with Lissa and record new material. I don't know if I want to participate. Recording with Lissa is a wonderful thing but recording without her would seem empty. She was the driving force behind the band and I'm not sure if they should continue. That's their decision, but my participation is mine. I'm currently undecided.

Playing with Lissa must have been a great experience. I can see where it would be difficult to decide what to do. Follow your heart and you'll make the right decision.

I'm curious about the ''surviving members''. I thought it was just Lissa and Mona. Who else is involved? Whatever you decide I hope you can share information with us about the CD once it's released. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to hear it.

Nice to see you here, Reverend Dave.

I "see" Lissa daily and think of her daily. I had a dream about her last night. She had the perfect answer to the civil debate. I know she would have had some choice words for that one.

I think about Lissa a lot too, I didn't know her that well but I remember when I was pregnant last year she was very happy and excited for me and said she thought pregnant women were so beautiful

Hello, Reverend Dave! You have been missed around here! glad to see you posting and hope you stick around. What were you doing in Africa? Any word on Lissa's daughters adoption? How is she doing? I think of her and Lissa often. And I too *see* her everyday. I bought my grandchildren penguin pajamas this year and a penguin stuff animal in honor of her.

I'm curious about the ''surviving members''. I thought it was just Lissa and Mona. Who else is involved?

The core group was Lissa on piano, Mona on bass and Brian on drums. They recruited other musicians as needed. When I played with them it was really an audition although I didn't know it. Lissa had finally given in and was willing to record a CD so she brought in other musicians for this purpose. Other musicians who might be involved are Ilse Huizinga, Janis Siegel, Candy Dulfer, Jerry Zigmont, Bill Frisell, Omar Hakim and Simon Wettenhall.

Adilah, think of it as a tribute to Lissa. SHe'd want the band to go on.

Thank you Judy. It's good to be back.

Lissa's father is adopting her daughter. Since adoption from China can take a year or more she will not be in New York until late 2008 at best. She's doing well, studying English and continuing with violin lessons.

My Africa trip was to do what little I could in Sudan.

It's nice to see the penguin theme is catching on.

Speaking of Christmas, this will be her family's first one without her. Most of her father's side are Christians so I'm sure this will be especially difficult for them. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts.

Thank you for the good news, Reverend Dave. It warms my heart to know Lissa's dad is adopting the child. I wish the process wasn't so long...also glad to hear about the violin lessons.

Welcome back from Sudan. I suspect you did more than you think you did and thanks for that.

Thanks for the update, Reverend Dave. I'm getting a penguin for Christmas. It's a ceramic penguin that my boyfriend brought back from Chile. I told him I wanted it to honor Lissa.

I've recently gotten back into playing the piano again. Right now I'm listening to Lissa play on SF radio and she is so inspiring to me. I can only dream of playing that well. She was so amazing.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this holiday season. I know full well how difficult those first holidays are and they never really get any easier. :(
And in the end...The love you take..Is equal to the love you make.

Maybe I should let Lissa and you Diane, both serve as inspiration to start playing again. I have started playing guitar again...a little.

Also thinking of Lissa's family at this difficult time of year....and my heart always goes out to you too Diane. I can only imagine how difficult the holidays can be with such a loss.

Yeah, the holidays suck now. <_< I just try to get through them.

I'm beginning to think that by playing again, it's somehow therapuetic. I haven't touched the piano in years but for some reason I'm inspired again. I took 10 years of classical piano, so my parents would be proud of me now. :)

Good for you Barb!! I still wish I could play the guitar. I absolutely love that instrument.
And in the end...The love you take..Is equal to the love you make.

Found the cutest Christmas tree ornament at Target. It's a shining silver and black penguin with one wing raised as if waving. It's wearing a black velvet bow. I had to get it. It will hang lovingly on my tree and it was made in China.
