Adult video store doesn’t have permission to open, says town
JASON MALLOY
The Truro Daily News

TRURO – A new business, specializing in adult videos, in Truro will be breaking the law if it opens in town, says town officials.

Signs are posted in the window at X-citement Video, located on Mill Street, but the paperwork to allow such a store to open has not been granted.

“They made an application ... but the development permit was refused,” said deputy development officer Juanita Bigelow. “That use is not permitted within the C-1 general commercial zone.”

The town’s bylaw says video stores which predominantly feature adult movies for sale are classified as adult entertainment.

While the store is not currently open the signage in the window states, “X-Citement Movies... And a lot More. For Adults Only.” The Quebec owners declined to comment on the story.

Town CAO Jim Langille said the company could be prosecuted if it opens without the proper documents.

“There would be a charge because they would be in breach of our land-use bylaw,” he said.

Sister Sarah’s owner Frank Rhyno tried to open up an adult-oriented shop in town two years ago but was turned down. He had to set up shop across the Salmon River in Bible Hill.

He respected the town’s decision but said if the new store is allowed to open, Sister Sarah’s will be coming to Truro.

He said his business “caters to a more discreet-oriented clientele,” than X-Citement Video, which has stores across the country and in Metro Halifax.

Sheesh! A porno shop is NOT a neccessity! Why the big uproar?

Even worse, the people commenting on the friggin' site THINK it should be allowed. if it was a grocery store or even a bookstore, it would be different. I think porno is degrading.

I don't mean to nit-pick, Aimee, but the world doesn't begin and end in Truro, Nova Scotia. I realise that these are local issues and you think they will make interesting talking points, but it's a big old world out there.

Of course Andy, the flipside to that point is that being such a big world, there a plenty of towns that do tolerate porn and people can go to those towns if Truro chooses not to tolerate it.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of innocence - to be able to walk down the street and not see any plastic franchises or places you wouldn't take your grandmother to.

Is there really a need for adult stores anymore? I say close them down. If someone wants that kind of merchandise they can easily find it on the web.

I've never been in any adult store, nor do I want to. It seems so sleezy. If you want adult toys there are plenty of sites on the web, plus there are Passion Parties, where a salesperson sells adult items. I know someone who does it and it's actually not sleezy. It's mainly for women who need items to help....um......"pleasure" themselves.

If it's not sleazy to sell adult toys through party plans, why is it considered sleazy to do it through a retail outlet? It's obviously a need, it has a marketplace, what's the problem?

the problem with some of the ones with peep shows is what goes on in them. Police in Providence in the past has made drug and prostitution arrests inside. I don't want that in my neighborhood and I am sure most people don't want it in theirs.

The problem is, it's one of those questions that no-one will answer honestly isn't it?

I don't care how anyone gets the jollies so long as they're not hurting anyone.

No-one (with the possible exception of Mozart8mytoe) would put their hand up and say, "Yes, I think we should have a sex shop in town," but obviously someone thinks there's a market or the idea wouldn't have been mooted in the first place. So who do you believe?

I would. I don't know if that makes me special, sexually liberated or very sick indeed. But I honestly don't see anything wrong with sex shops. And before anyone points out the difference between not seeing anything wrong with them and wanting them in their town, let me say that I don't consider them as necessary as, say, a grocery store, but about as necessary as a bookstore. If you can have the choice to satisfy your mind, why not your body. That sort of thing.

They opened a sex shop in the town I live in last year. Before it opened the local papers had articles about it,asking locals what they thought. They said how every pervert from 50 miles away will decend on us (even though London is only 25 miles away) how girls will not be able to walk the streets in safety etc etc.
They then went on to say that when people leave the train station it will be the first thing they will see, bringing shame to the town.(as though the drunks and fights on fri/sat nights are not shameful).
Well they got permission from the council to open and ,shortly after work commenced at the empty shop opposite the station. I was surprised to find out it was an Indian restaurant! The sex shop is the other end of the High Street away from most people. I only noticed it was there when I noticed the word PRIVATE SHOP above the window. As far as I'm aware the town has not been flooded with perverts and the safety of girls walking home alone is the same as always. I have not been in it and not even seen it advertised, but if thats what people want so be it. If the customers don't arrive they will soon close down.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

Amen, sister. I don't see a problem with adult shops. And I consider myself sexually liberated, not a sicko!

The marketing of sex is far too ambiguous a subject. I wish I had something to contribute.

This reminds me of when they tried to open a franchise of Vegas' "Pink Taco" up in Scottsdale Arizona and there was a big controversy. "It gives a bad image to the town" and "It's just plain sick" and blah blah blah. I don't know if they did open it. To me the whole issue was just ridiculous.

We have a small sex shop in my City and I have gone in there a couple of times. It is far from sleazy. Another one that I go to is a bit bigger and is also quite nice. No sleaze there either.

To the marketing of sex? I'm glad you don't... it'd make me uncomfortable.

My point was that there have been quite a few threads concentrating upon Aimee's home town recently. If we all did that... well, it'd be a far busier message board! Carry on! :P

Just in case anyone got me wrong, I don't think people who go to sex shops are pervs and I applaud the openness of those who have contradicted me.

I would suggest though that there is a demographic that would go to such shops and pretend they didn't. And they're the ones that I would be wary of. Expression of sexuality is not a perversion - suppression of it is.

Jeez, I just reread what I wrote here and I sound like a prude. I have never been to a sex shop, because of the things I've heard. I know there is one here in Buffalo, and it's in a "seedy" part of the city. Most sex shops seem to end up in the industrial part of a city or town because nobody wants them near churches or schools.
I shouldn't judge a place though unless I've been in one. I apologize for doing that.
