I know this is an old article, but it's interesting because....
1. It was in the newspaper I deliver...
2. They both work for the company! They work at the warehouse, mainly dropping off flyers and newspapers. So we talk to them a lot....

SALMON RIVER – A local animal lover is considering signing on to a class-action lawsuit against a pet-food company after the sudden death of her two dogs.

“What else can it be?” Salmon River

resident Bev DeVouge said of contaminated pet food, which she believes caused the death of her beloved cockapoo named Duchess, and Shenel, a golden retriever which died Tuesday.

Both dogs had been fed Ol’Roy canned food, one of the labels produced by Menu Foods. Menu Foods in mid-March issued a North American recall of 95 wet cat and dog foods, including Ol’Roy.

In late March, the company announced that lab tests had identified aminopterin as the toxin in the recalled pet food that had resulted in kidney failure and deaths among cats and dogs in Canada and the U.S.

Aminopterin, a folic acid antagonist, used in rat poison in some countries, is also an anti-cancer drug.

Since the recall, a class-action suit was launched in Ontario against Menu Foods, which lawyer David Himelfarb said he hopes will lead to future regulation of the pet food industry.

“It’s beyond me how rat poison can get into the food chain. It’s sickening,” Himelfarb said in an earlier news report. “It’s beyond me why we don’t have regulations in Canada to regulate these companies to make sure that there’s proper testing involved and make sure that their supply chain for ingredients is properly tested and has integrity.”

That is precisely how DeVouge and her son Jeff feel after losing their dogs.

DeVouge said she initially thought that Duchess had simply died from old age. But when Shenel, a healthy five-year-old, came down with similar symptoms two weeks later, she began to suspect that tainted dog food was the true cause in both deaths.

She said her veterinarian agrees with her regarding the latter dog, though her case may be hard to prove, given that she got rid of all her Ol’Roy dog food after the recall was announced and because of the expense to have a pathology test done on the pets.

“The vet said it often takes a while to degenerate the kidneys as much as it did for Shenel,” she said, of the time frame between when the dogs consumed the food and when they took ill. “She told us the readings (blood tests) were way off the chart for a dog that age.” DeVouge said the deaths have left her sad and upset that her dogs had to die needlessly. “They were like little kids, they were the babies of the family,” she said. “I am so angry about what happened with the food. We buy food thinking it is safe for our pets. How are you supposed to know?”

It's very sad - we should be as certain of the quality of our pets' food as we are ours. They're part of the family, after all. :(
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I agree, Andy. The place where I buy the girls' dog food sells wholesome foods. None of the recalled brands are available at Pet Planet. They also don't sell animals, refering you instead to the SPCA, or rescue foundations.

I totally switched the food I feed my cats after this happened. I now get it from a natural pet food supplier who delivers it to my home. Cats love it and their coats really shine.

It's amazing what good, wholesome food will do for them (& us too)! I noticed several changes in the girls once I switched food. Their coats improved, & their energy level went through the roof. Angel runs laps around the house, & Bonita shakes the heck out of her toys. They just seem to feel better.

I suppose it's the same as us - if we eat processed, low-quality food all the time, we'd be lethargic, sluggish and unhealthy. Get a person with a poor diet & put them on a diet of fresh food and you soon notice the difference.

I think we owe our pets that - if we can afford it, of course. :)
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.
