A baby mammoth unearthed in the permafrost of north-west Siberia could be the best preserved specimen of its type, scientists have said.

I find this very exciting.

Cloning the poor animal (If possible) would only be cruel. In my opinion

Why not? Where do I begin? If it's inability to survive wasn't enough, what about all the biological repercussions? I would call it selfish to start cloning for our own entertainment but our environment and existence would be endangered as well. Bad things happen when people meddle. The world changes constantly and things either adapt or perish. You can't just smack a dinosaur or saber tooth in the middle of the 21st century, especially if crossbreeding were to enter people's minds which I'm sure, if they're willing to go as far as cloning, it would. I know they're awesome creatures but as you can obviously tell, they're still with us in the form of an animal we call an elephant. The reason they don't look like they used to is because they cannot. They have developed to fit the current state of things as everything must, including us. We have to accept the course of nature and have a little faith in it.

DNA is being collected from critically endangered animals in the foreseeable event that they become extinct due to hunting, deforestation, etc. I reluctantly support that effort so long as the animals' reintroduction occurs immediately after it's demise and that it be only a response to human stupidity and not the winds of change. Anything later than that I think we'd have to count our losses and learn from our mistakes. It does concern me that if it's successful we might start to think we have an excuse to continue destroying everything in our path but, frankly, it's for our own good. I hope that is realized one day.

Have you seen the movie Jurassic Park, Dotty? Just the thought of them cloning anything makes me very nervous. Nature doesn't need to be cloned, someone could clone something for something bad. Cloning this mamouth doesn't seem right, IMHO. :(

Fiona, nicely said. We should never meddle in areas that could really damage an already sensitive ecological structure. We may have scientist who can do all kinds of things but why tamper with mother nature. There is only one nature that is already on the brink of being destroyed. Why do we think that just because we know the dna factor, that we have to build our own living model? Why?

Seeing that wooly mammoth is really very very cool and quite the find. You look at the picture and you can almost get the feel of what that animal was about to do before death interrupted it's cycle.

Dotty, actually the mammoths were not around humans that much and apparently a good deal of them died towards the end of the last ice age. I think the Jurassic Park reference has more to do with cloning than with the dinosaurs.

Too late to complain - it's already been cloned... we are going to need these mammoths to replace cars after the world runs out of oil...

Tony, you say that with a picture of 3 vegetarians right underneath.

Dotty, there are some things that man should never touch or meddle in. One of them is cloning. Scientists were supposed to have had the knowledge on human cloning a long time ago. You know who one of the subjects they were to clone was supposed to be? Adolf Hitler! Now you want us to start cloning?

I am all for cloning extinct animals. Perhaps they hold the answers to some of our problems. Imagine these mammoths could have the secret cure for cancer in their ivories. Whose to say?

Besides the meat might very well taste great and be less filling!

Tony you are still talking about meat with 3 vegetarians in that picture in your signature. Yes I know Lisa Simpson is not real but for an animated figure, she is a vegetarian.

How can anyone be for cloning? It is like when you breed an animal, you don't necessarily get the characteristics you want. With each new generation, the original dna suffers and breaks down. What was once a docile animal could turn out to be a wild predator down the line.

If they were to clon the animal, where would they put it? Large part of its ecosystem is long gone, they'd have to place them in some lonely cage re-creating its environment. Didn't it live in cold climate areas during the ice age? The way things are going right now, the world lacks sufficiently large areas to sustain an animal of such proportions. Where would they put them? Canada? Alone and in Canada....... Great fun....... Sorry my Canadian fellows, I'm just joking but you get my point ;)
