I can't believe that after so many years and so many Beatles forums, I have never once seen a thread dedicated to the Goons.

George Martin will be the first to tell you that Milligan, Sellers and Secombe were as much an influence on the Beatles as Elvis Presly, Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly ever were. In fact, he signed the Beatles not because of their musical talent (which was minimal at the time) but because of their wit and humour.

So, at long last, here's the place to discuss Ned of Wales, Count Jim Thighs Moriarty and Spike Milligna, the well known typing error.

Needle nardle noo.

Whatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhat!

(Sorry to go off topic in the very first reply, but I think it's wrong to interpret what George Martin said about signing The Beatles to mean that he signed them for their wit and humour rather than their musical talents. Also I would disagree that their musical talents were minimal at that time given that they had a following in Liverpool, they had hundreds of hours of performing experience in Hamburg, Lennon and McCartney had written many songs (although most of them were never used), and they could obviously play and sing well. In Geoff Emerick's book, he mentions that there was a buzz of excitement about The Beatles coming into Abbey Road to record Love Me Do, so unless everyone was expecting a comedy group, this was probably to do with their music.) :)

Actually, I put it mildly.

Quote:

SIR GEORGE MARTIN thought THE BEATLES were "awful" and "crap" when he first heard them perform. The legendary performer - later dubbed 'The Fifth Beatle' - auditioned the Fab Four after they had been rejected by label Decca. And he took a lot of convincing to take them on. Martin says, "They were pretty awful. "I wasn't impressed with their music. They were crap. I saw them in the Cavern after I signed them and they could hold an audience. What made me sign them was their charisma. "They had this wonderful quality that when you were with them, you felt enriched by their presence and, when they left you, you felt diminished. There weren't many people who do that collectively."

Yeah Bill's right, if George Martin had been wearing a tie that George Harrison found appealing that day, we would have had Brian Pole & The Tremalosmania instead. Is that on topic?

No?

Well it that case I'm going to hold a ryhming competition.
