What would you do if you saw a dog in an automobile? It doesn't matter how hot it is outdoors. Would you try to find out who the owner of the dog was? Would you call the animal shelter/SPCA?

I would get the licence plate of the car and then call the local SPCA. People need to learn that you don't leave your dogs or any other animals in the car. Leave your pets at home, unless you're going on a road trip.

Would I call the SPCA every time I saw an unattended dog in a car? No, not unless it was hot. You don't know the specific circumstances why the dog has been left in the car, or how long they are going to be left for. There are simply some times when you should mind your own business and, if the animal isn't in distress and can come to no harm by being left in a car for ten minutes by an owner who needs to go into a store which doesn't permit dogs inside, then I don't see a problem with that... people don't need to 'learn' anything if they're not doing anything wrong.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I agree with Andy, whole heartedly.

My parents love taking Buffy on little road trips, even if its just to the store.
But they always make sure it isn't a terribly hot day.
And if it's in the 70's or Low 80s, they make sure to park in a large shaded area.
They also bring her water dish to set out when their out of the car.

When we go on road trips, Buffy has to stay in the car when we visit Grandma Linder.
Because dog's are not allowed. But we always go down and check on an give her water, and take her out to stretch her legs.

So does make my dad an I horrible owners just because we leave our dog in the car?

I never said people who leave their animals in cars horrible pet owners. I just was listening to the news a couple of days ago about what people should do if they see animals in cars. The local SPCA suggests that even in not hot weather that people NEVER leave their animals in cars. They say to report those who do.

Molly, I wasn't laughing at YOU, but merely what the radio jockey's were saying!
Everybody has their opinion, they said their's, Andy said his, and I said mine and you said yours as well.
But yeah, I wasn't laughing at you, so why take offense? I'm sorry that you did. ^_^

You forgot to state how far down the windows are in the car. That part is very important. If the windows are almost all the way up, the car is parked in the sun (no matter how hot it is), then you should become alarmed. If there is sufficient ventilation (like the windows-not just one-are at least 2" down) and the dog is not panting heavily than it should be alright. Yes, the temperature of a car can get up 20 degrees hotter than it is outside. The key is to have more than one window rolled down a couple of inches.

Well if you must know..

Every window is down, that's 4 windows down with 3 and a half inches.
Plus the water on the floor and her little bed opposite of that.
They keep her hair short in the summer, and slightly longer in the winter.
We make sure she is going to be safe and comfortable when we get out of that car,
as my dad loves Buffy as she was his own child, the same with my mother and
the same for me. She's a very important part of our life.
Even the house is safe, my parents even have those safety plugs for the electric outlets.
They also have locks on the bottom cabinets so she can't get into something that could be dangerous.
My mother is the one who buys her toys, and makes sure they are safe for her to play with.

what if there's a/c in the car?
In general I think it's a bit tricky sticking our noses in other people's business in iffy situations, unless, say, there's an incident of abuse right before our eyes, or something. As Andy says, there could be a million reasons why a dog is inside a car, and most of them could be perfectly normal.

A few weeks back this guy was arrested for leaving his dog in the car. It was on one of the hot days we had and he left the dog in the car for a half hour. The dog almost died because the car got up in the 100s. The guy however got his dog back, which is stupid, IMHO. If you're going to leave your dog in a hot car then you shouldn't be allowed to have pets.

Unfortunately, they're not usually very tough on animal neglecters and if they try to be, they're usually unsuccessful. Perhaps he received a fine?

I agree with Andy. There's a lot of nice days out there when you can take your dog for a ride with you while your running errands. Most dog owners have common sense and know when it's too hot to leave a dog in the car. They love their pets just like their children. It's the few idiots that do leave their dogs in the car on a too warm/hot day that should lose their dog and have to pay a hefty fine.
