Once when I was volunteering with the San Antonio Zoo. I watched as some kits were making fun and making snide remarks about a wart hog. Before they made the remark the animal was playing and prancing around so proud but when they made the remarks the animal stopped and his head seemed to lower as if he were upset i think they do under stand. love doris.

I do believe they understand, if not english then the emotion of the word, or the vibe coming from it. I know my fish and my dog do, especially buffy

Most animals definitely have what we would call feelings. Praise your dog then yell at him & compare his different reactions. Many animals have been observed mourning the death of one of their own. A mother elephant will stay with its dead baby for days. Giraffes will gather around a dead commrade & form a tight circle. Humans are the only animals that can make money from their emotions, but certainly not the only animals to have emotions. |

Differant animals will have differant levels of emotion, for instance a dog will often love it's owner very much and be able to tell when it is being praised or scholded. An earwig not so much and just carry on doing earwig things in an earwig way no matter what ever level of effection it receives. As for understaning us, animals all opperate on differant levels of comprihesion to us so they can only understand us in ways that they can make sense of what we're doing which will inverably not be actually what we are doing. If an animal could speak it still wouldn't because it wouldn't understand the concept. |

Yes, I think they have feelings and although it is very improbable that they understand verbal language (although some animals can be 'trained' to do so), many animals can certainly sense our tone of voice and read body language. |

I know my cats have feelings. I am sure that at this moment they are not very happy with mom. But when I arrive home on Sunday, I will be forgiven within 5 minutes. It's nice to know that. They know when I am angry with them for something and they also know when I need some comforting. They take great care of me. |

Animals are very intelligent. They definitely have feelings. I have a dog because he is supposed to be a man's best friend, but he doesn't seem to like me. He isn't any kind of friend, and certainly not my best friend. I feel very let down. He doesn't even listen to me anymore. I wouldn't even keep him around if he wasn't such a good cook. |

I'm a huge fan of animal behavior and I do think animals do have feelings. I know a dog can feel sadness because I know a friend who had lost their beloved cat and her other cat seemed lost. The cat knew the other cat wasn't around. |

I have a cat who is deaf. I have had him since he was born (he turned 8 yesterday). He actually understands some sign language. If he looks at me and I want him to come and sit on my lap I make a sign with my hand and he will get up and come over and climb up. He knows a sign for 'go to your chair' and for 'Is it time to eat?' Animals are much smarter than we give them credit for being... |

And I was forgiven in a matter of seconds last night when I arrived home. One is purring on my lap now. The other slept very close to me last night. Don't do this again, he was saying. |

In Paul's Arms!

A long time ago, my mom and I were going away for a week. We had arranged with a neighbor to come and take care of my cat. As we were putting our luggage into the car, our cat was in a window doing something he never did before..........was meowing down at us as if to say goodbye. It broke my heart. A few years after that my dog watched me as I buried this beautiful kitten that had just died within the hour in my bedroom. My dog went out with me to the backyard and watched as I dug the little grave. As I was laying the kitten in the grave, my dog looked up at me and started to whimper. Another time when one of my 3 cats died, the other 2 acted differently. One of the other 2 was good for comforting me when I needed it. She would instinctively come over and lay in my lap. She was the one that always drove me nuts, though. She would just sit there talking to anyone within listening distance and when she wanted to go outside, she really got annoying. When I would yell at her, she would back off. |

I brought a film home from the library on pet birds .I guess one of the parakeets must have been really appealing to my female as she was churping away and excited like Hey what a good looking bird. When Petey and Myrtle first met. I had myrtle on the table and petey at the bird stand Myrtl hissed and Petey said: F**k You to myrlte. I knew that I had two male animals. Animals also seem to have good reasoning ability love doris. |

When I had my surgery and was hospitalized for a month, I had two cats. I had had someone caring for them while I was hospitalized, but they were so happy to see me when I finally got home. Problem was they wanted to sit on my lap and it hurt my incision. They wanted to sleep on my stomach and it hurt. I solved the sleeping problem by getting them a cat heating pad and they slept on it. I just had to watch them carefully (which was hard as I was on vicodin) and try to keep them off of me when I was sitting in my chair. I did have a cat die and my poor Ben went to one of her favorite places in the house when I returned home with the empty cat carrier and howled and howled. It broke my heart. |
