Ok, Alright Well basically i'm making my first ever trip to the states in July i'll be flying from Birmingham International Airport (UK) to Newark Airport New Jersey (USA) alone for 7 hours, then i'll be flying onto Reagan International Airport Washington DC (USA) for another hour. Basically i'll be flying alone and i'm scared to death, i've never flown alone before, plus this will be the longest period of time i'd of ever flown and i'm definitly not the best flyer in the world so i could do with some advice as i'm crapping myself here. Love Nick |

Whatever you do, stay sober. Distract yourself with music, movies & any other inflight entertainment but don't hit the bottle - flying dehydrates you. Drink plenty of water & buy something to read at the airport. When you board, tell the steward/ess that it's your first time flying long distance on your own and they will be able to offer you reassurance and/or tips.

First of all you will have to make sure you have your passport, tickets and money before you head over to the airport.
Check for delays etc and when you need to check in. Decide (as you may be asked) whether you want a window or aisle seat. If you are someone who regularly needs the toilet I recommend you chose an aisle seat. Wear comfortable clothing - you will be sitting down for a long time. I can't think of anymore at the moment other than what has already been mentioned....oh and check the weather reports so you are prepared. This isn't a silly thing. I was living in Sri Lanka and we were going to go to India for Christmas and had we not checked the weather report we would have assumed the weather was the same - it turned out to be 3 C! I know you are going to the States, its just an example.
Have a great time.

Nick, Take Andy's advise and if you have an ipod or something similar, bring that to listen to music, plus a book. Call your Dr., and tell him your situation and maybe he can give you something to calm you a bit, but try it before you leave so you know how your going to feel. Hope you enjoy your visit to the states. Maybe you can meet a few from the board from that area, who lives near there??? Have a safe trip. |

Yes Nick, no drinking unless it's water or soda! Take some books, mags and plently of cd's with you. And SLEEP! You will have jet lag when you get to the States, so take a nap on the plane to help somewhat adjust your body to the time zones. For ear popping, keep gum in your pocket at the ready. You will have nothing to fear, flying is actually safer than driving! |

That's true, even though I'm afraid of flying. If we heard everyday of all the car accidents that happened and killed people, we wouldn't get in a car. Remind yourself of all the flights that take off everyday. http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/34532 "On any given day, more than 87,000 flights are in the skies in the United States. Only 35 percent, or just over 30,000 of those flights are commercial carriers, like American, United or Southwest. On an average day, air traffic controllers handle 28,537 commercial flights (major and regional airlines), 27,178 general aviation flights (private planes), 24,548 air taxi flights (planes for hire), 5,260 military flights and 2,148 air cargo flights (Federal Express, UPS, etc.). At any given moment, roughly 5,000 planes are in the skies above the United States. In one year, controllers handle an average of 64 million takeoffs and landings. For every one flight you see listed on an airport monitor, two you don't see show up on air traffic controllers' screens. It would take approximately 7,300 airport terminal monitors to show all the flights controllers handle in a single day and approximately 460 monitors to show the number of flights being handled at any one time." And that's just the United States. |

Nick, first let me state that i love to fly, safest fastest way to go about anywhere. First the basics, relax and enjoy. Do not bring liquids that are not in a ziplock baggie over 3 ounces. Now if you need to have some sort of fluid, make up or something, put it in a baggie. all other liquids - shampoo etc, pack in your bag in your carry on, pack everything you do not want to loose for you can not lock your suitcase and valuables will disappear. if you have a power converter also bring that for all your plug in items will need one to work here. your laptop, cds and player, electric handheld games, cell phone, camera and film, and dont forget headphones all go into your carryon along with a good book, meds you need (dont chance loosing them) and copies of all of your stuff including the passport - incase you loose it. Cash also goes with you and travelers checks are highly recommended. buy something to drink or eat on the plane at the airport after security, else security will make you throw it away. Dress comfortably, esp if taking a redeye. Be sure to get up and walk a bit every few hours. the ride is smoother in the front of the plane so avoid the rear seats, also takes longer to get on/off when in the back. Enjoy Virginia, it is a beautiful state and is full of rich history. The covered bridges are spectacular. The weather in the summer is hot and humid so be prepared. so kick back, relax and enjoy the flight. dont worry about anything for there isnt anything you can do about it and worrying takes too much energy |

I always read on flights or talk to other passengers. A long flight finishes quickly when you're engaged in conversation. |

Nick: I'm the one boardie (I think) that lives in the nearby area where you're visiting (I'm in Maryland, near northern Virginia). If you have any questions about the area, just ask. About flying, I don't have anything to add other than what others have said, particularly Judy (Queenbee). I know a lot of people take anti-anxiety meds in a low dose before they fly, so it could be helpful. But if not, just be sure to have lots of distractions, music, books, magazines, puzzles, whatever helps you specifically. Also be sure to drink lots of water (it helps with jet lag) and bring something like gum or chewy candy or lollipops to have as the plane takes off and lands (helps with adjusting the pressure in your ears). Remember like Jana said though that any liquid has to be brought in the area after you go through security, or you can't bring it with you. I like to bring some food too because the food and snacks are awful on planes. Good luck, Lisa |

I fly an average of once a month. I fly internationally at least three of four times each year. I have yet to die in a plane crash. Not counting September 2001, I know no one who was ever involved in a plane crash. I know plenty of people who have been in automobile accidents. I cannot count how many times I have seen cars mangled in the road this year alone. I have only seen two planes crash in my entire life, and those were on purpose. The best advice I could give someone who is not used to flying is to acclimate yourself to the new time zone before you fly. If possible, put yourself on that time a day or two in advance. Whether you arrive at noon or midnight, you will feel like it should be noon or midnight. And as others have said, bring your own food. Unless you are flying Air France, the food will suck. |

Agh Continental is bad (for food) -- make sure you have something you like to eat. Besides, anything they will give you will be very tiny to be sure so if you are hungry you will need more anyway. |

British Airways has good food!!! Weighing in late here but contrary to what others have to say, 1 drink will help settle your nerves and won't dehydrate you, especially if you follow it with water. Long distance flights have movies and TV playing on setback screens all flight long. Music is great but I think the programming really takes your mind off things. I agree with everyone to bring snacks. Nothing worse than being at the mercy of the airline as to when and what you can eat. When you check in ask how full the flight is and try to get an empty row or at least an empty seat next to you. It's nice to have that extra room. I don't know if Continental gives you a amenities kit but bring a tooth brush and a small travel toothpaste. It feels really good to freshen up before you get off the plane. Most of all relax and enjoy. The miracle of air flight is really something to behold. Have a wonderful trip!!!!! |

Just be careful not to flirt too much Nick.
When I was flying back from California a couple weeks ago this 30 year old guy who was sitting across the aisle from me kept winking at me and smiling whenever I glanced in his general direction. It got really, really, annoying after about three hours... <_< But you're a cool guy, so I'm sure whoever your next to will be quite happy they got to sit with you.
But honestly Nick, flying is not that bad at all. The worst part is just the boredom. Just bring a book or a CD player and you'll be fine. Oh, and the ear popping sucks too, so if you have sensitive ears chew gum! |

Nick, I'd have to agree with all things said. Basically, 1. Look up the regulations of what can and cannot be brought on a flight. No liquids over 3 onces etc... 2. Bring a lot of entertainment. I bring my CD's, a personal DVD player, and a book. And word puzzles (I have a multi-track mind )3. Relax. I hate flying, but only for the airports. Just sit back, and enjoy the flight. It'll go a lot quicker. Oh, and try not to get the aisle seat. Flight attendants will repetively bump your arms  4. Buy water on the plane, since you can't bring it yourself. Keep hydrated, preferably non-caffeinated (on the off-chance you like to sleep on trips) 5. Wear comfy clothes. No matter what. But, don't dress like a hobo. Corporate casual...? 6. Bring snacks. Little bags of chex mix and granola bars are perfect. 7. I usually don't need it, but gum is good. Don't sweat it. When in doubt, follow the passengers in front of you

Nick first off ..... relax. As Lissa says flying is very safe. More people die crossing the streets then in a plane crash. The pilots and attendants do their jobs everyday and do them well. Bring your cd player and some good tunes and remember - fresh batteries. Nothing more annoying then trying to listen to the crap the play on in flight radio. Start trying to stay up later just before your flight. US is 5 hours behind you and you really aint gonna enjoy getting up at 3 am. Thats the time to be going to sleep. Like Andy said lay off the booze, drink plenty of water, no soda or caffeine. and enjoy your time with Connie and remember you'll be in America, home of George W Bush and Dick Cheney. Oh and one more thing, dress comfortably for the flight. |
