Do you prefer dogs or cats - it's as simple as that!

IT'S THE ISSUE OF THE YEAR!!! :hyper:

Vote, vote, vote! :P

This is far more important than any political thread... come on people, get your votes in now!

Ask not what your pets can do for you, but what you can do for your pets!

etc, etc, etc.... :P

I have a funny feeling that Keith Harris and Orville will take this at the wire. ;)

I was going to vote "cats", but my golden retriever, Daisy, sat on my foot until I voted "both". :giggle:

Fiona has just accused Keith Harris & Orville of being the Ralph Nader of the Dog or Cat thread! :o

C'mon dog or cat fans... let's make sure that one wins outright!

Get those votes coming in, thick & fast! :D

Right although I am an animal lover I have always had issues with cats probably as a result of being pounced on by my uncles cat there as a kid so there has always been an element of fear and I'm alergic too.Cats have always seemed sneaky.

I have 2 dogs and they are both awesome.I love walking them and I love playing football with them so I'm a dog lover

Well you know I'm a bad girl Peter, as I love cats.

As for love, you don't know my Kyra, who sleeps under the covers with me when I nap, or my Duncan, who is mostly glued to my lap when I watch TV, or Yuko who loves all people even my wild and wooly five-year-old, who she lets drag her around everywhere without complaint.

I love dogs too but cats are cuddlier, smaller and easier to take care of. Actually I love most animals, even possums.

Ask Fiona. :P

I do have to admit.Cats are really sinister creatures. They know if you dont like themand they take full advantage of the situation.
I was walking both my dogs one day and there was a cat in the way and it wouldnt move a bit whereas both my dogs decided to leap in different directions and the cat was enjoying the event

Surprise, surprise ... you finally posted a poll that I was willing to participate in.

So what is it then Icarus? Of course I think I know really.

I opted for the "both" type ... had a variety of dogs when I was growing up, German Shepard's, Poodle-Terrier little guy was a sweet heart ... Australian Shepard, she was quite a sharp one she was ... let's see my dad had a couple of Standard Poodles and a couple of Doberman's, my siblings father's wife breed Samoyed's. I had the tendency to name all of my male dog's Sam when I was young  ... not sure what that was about, but when I named all of the German Shepard puppies that it was pretty confusing (lol). As an adult I had a Husky-Lab mix ... he was awesome, named Mr. Bodacious ... thought he needed a title :giggle: ... called him Bodhi for short. A couple of years ago I had a beautiful little Basset puppy, but decided that I couldn't spend enough time with him so I got him to a couple down in Northern California that had recently lost theirs ... they had kids and more property for him to play in, so it was a good decision ... but a little heartbreaking.

Now I've got a couple of cat's ... Bella and Sophia, one's a tortoise shell calico and the other is a trippy looking Asian Tabby (think they might be called Ebony Spotted).

So both seemed to be the way to go. ;)

I love dogs too but cats are cuddlier, smaller and easier to take care of. Actually I love most animals, even possums.

Ask Fiona. :P

Yes, Lisa loves possums and that's why I love her. Well, one of the reasons.

I wasn't sure whether to vote for cats or both but if given the choice I'd probably always adopt a cat so that's what I went for (I can relate to them better). ^_^

I have to object to the badmouthing of cats. They are lovely creatures who can be just as sweet and cuddly as any. They're all different, just like all animals are! Granted, many people choose them because they don't like being dirty and let you go to the library without committing suicide, but they can be suckups, too.

My three cats are independant but when it comes right down to it, they need and love their humans and have special bonds with just us. One is especially attached to my mother, one is especially attached to me, and one is a little social sl*t and drools so we think he's part dog. :D

Cats rule.

Aww...Twiggy is just adorable...I love little dogs like that!

I don't mean to knock cats, I have a respect for them, but I just can't relate to them as well as I do dogs. I've never seen a cat that seemed to be much more than self-contained and not concerned about its owner's feelings. I'm sure there are some wonderful exceptions as you mentioned, Fiona, but in my experience most are just users!

Mimi had some endearing ways...she'd sit on my lap and I was just about the only person she would allow to hold her, but she bolted away on me, and that element of loyalty just wasn't there.

Well, I think cats become accustomed to their owners (or their pets, so to speak ^_^ ) so when strangers come in, they're distant. I have no problem with that :)

I could never live without my cats. Gypsy is definately stuck on me. When I close my door, she knocks to get in. She follows me around the house, and I'm the only one she'll allow to carry her around. When I play piano, she sits on the bench with me for a while. She's just sweet. Her late sister Lilo was a sweetie too. I like them because... you don't have to train them to be good, it just comes with the package. Cats either like you, or they could care less, but when you find one that loves you, you know it's special

I voted both as I was raised with both as well as fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, and birds. I side more with cats but at the moment would love to have a dog (my boyfriend is a cat person and doesn't want dogs). I go for bigger ones like Kaia (she's beautiful).

Fiona your post reminds me of when I had 3 cats. All 3 had different personalities. 1) Marilyn was the typical aloof cat but head of the household, 2) Gertrude a beautiful tortoiseshell with golden eyes was shy but very loving, and 3) Smokey a Russian Blue kitty was my talker, one that would rush to my side to comfort me when I would be crying my eyes out, and my social kitty. I miss them terribly and when they all died within a couple of years of each other, they left a big hole in my life. A hole that will never be completely filled. My boyfriend's kitty is lovely but she is getting old and starting to loose a lot of fur.

That makes me so sad, Cathy, I know that one day I will understand how you feel and I dread it. The two cats we've had the longest (the queen of everything and my momma's boy) will probably go within a few years of each other and a little piece of me will be lost with them, especially my darling baby Reepicheep. Hopefully the sl*tty one will stick around a little longer (he's a talker, too, funny!) because he's considerably younger than the other two but my mother fears he has kitty leukemia because the others pick on him and, like I said, the drooling. The others don't seem to have caught anything but there's not much you can do about it otherwise. Anyway, here's to your kitties, who will always be sitting in the lap of your heart. :sweet:

Thank you, Fiona. My cats favorite places to lie was when I would lay down I would have one on my chest, another on my legs, and another in the crook of my armpit. The one in the crook of my armpit, about a week after she died I could swear I felt her presence there. For about an hour she "laid" there until I had to get up and told her I had to get up. Then that presence was gone. It was like she was telling me goodbye. Sad but it helped with the grief. I had these cats for some 19 years, Marilyn, and Smokey adopted me some 8 years later. Gertrude was the one that loved laying in the crook of my armpit with her head on my shoulder.

I do have a favorite story on my pets. We had both cats and dogs at once. One of our dogs had given birth and we had a sickly kitten at the time that loved to eat. One day, in the box where the mother fed the puppies, we found the kitty nestled in drinking the mother's milk from our new mother. She allowed this little kitty to drink from her for quite awhile.

What about *Manny Bird, pretty bird*, she feels left out. We have 2 dogs,
chocolate Lab/Chesapeake Bay, Named Hoskie and Tea Cup Yorkie named Lulu
and a small Sengal parrot named Manny Bird.
We thought about getting a few cats but I'm afraid of the urine smell plus I have to worry if they get outside, we have coyotes in abundance here that prey on the cat populations back here. We always find cat's skin around the property. Our neighbors have wild cats that live outside, although she does lock them up at night or they could stay in the barn if they like all the time. She is a cat lover. She has no idea what happens to her cats as her husband won't tell her because it would break her heart. I think I would want to know. I'd hate to have a cat hunted down so cruelly. Not a pleasant way to go.

I think my mom has a picture of the cat nursing. Unfortunately I have no scanner. It's funny how animals will deal with babies. A friend had cats and dogs, too. Her cat had just given birth and had snuck outside about 10 days after the kittens were born. Unfortunately she got into a yard that had a german shepherd who apparently smelled her milk (the dog had never caused any trouble before and didn't afterwards) and killed her. Mom, dad, kids, aunts, and uncles all took their turns on feeding the kittens but the babies needed to be cleaned. Their dog, can't remember the breed, came to the rescue. Those kittens grew up and loved playing with him. Such a gift that animals have that not enough humans have.

Fiona, my boyfriend used to raise bunnies.

Judy, I kept my cats indoors when I moved to an apt that had a lot of cats. Unfortunately that didn't keep them from getting a highly contagious and deadly disease.

I love all animals, and really would love to have a dog.

I'm definitely a cat person. All of my adult life, I have been owned by cats. They love me no matter what I do or say to them. They take care of me when I need to be taken care of. They are a constant in my life--the only constant in my life. No urine smell here and cats don't bolt when they are being moved if they are properly in a carrier. A cat being carried in somebody's arms who is used to being indoors is going to bolt out of pure fear.

If you get them fixed, the boys are very unlikely to spray. Other than that, they don't need much potty training other than being shown the litterbox because they're such clean and private animals. Ours just do their business outside but if you have lots of coyotes I understand your concern and maybe you're right not to keep cats.

I never had a male that sprayed, but I had him neutered when he was very young. I did have a female who did. However, it was determined she had brain cancer. None of my other cats have ever, ever not used their box and my house does not smell like urine. I keep the box cleaned out

I don't like outdoor cats. I like indoor cats. I just can't take the chance of seeing them on the road when I leave for work. When I got the two I have now, I was living in the mountains and there were not only coyotes, but bears. They definitely would not have lasted long outdoors there.

I like having lap sitting cats.

If you raise a cat from a kitten, and never let them outside (maybe once in the snow) then they're unlikely to even WANT to be outside. I have a cat who's afraid to go out, because she's literally afraid of the wind.

And, like you Fiona, I've never had a cat go outside the litter pan, except for one very old cat who's ability to feel it was declining.

Unfortunately I don't really like cats for a number of reasons. I am more a dog person and my parents dog is just adorable she was abandoned and they adopted her. Her name is Twiggy and has a great personality and cracks me up each time I see her.

BOOOOOOOOOO....!!!! Well that's outta my system. ;)

Cats are more independant, & I think that upsets some people. Especially those who want to be in control. Sorry--you'll never achieve that with most cats.

But YOU CAN have an absolutely WONDERFUL relationship with Kitties ! It just takes more time--and effort. I found "Fluffy" on the side of the highway, after someone had hit, and left him to die. [ I HATE people like that]. His cries broke my heart. So I bundled him up in an old raincoat and took him to the local Vet; who fixed his many injuries, which included a multi-fractured jaw. I had to hand-feed him very mushy food for a 3 mths.

If that doesn't create a bond, nothing will. When he got well, it was obvious he considered himself my Kittie. Every afternoon/evening, he'd wait at the foot of the driveway of my Parents' home, [where I was still living then], for me to come home. Then he'd chatter all the way inside, telling me I guess, about his day. Or if I was late, telling me off was more like it! I could always tell the difference and not just by tone--he'd thump his big, bushy tail like humans tap there fingers. You haven't lived 'til your cat has scolded you for breaking curfew, I tell ya ! :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

Twiggy is adorable. Like I said earlier, I do luuuv little doggies.

My daughter had 2 cats (1 she still has). They had to get rid of the first one because when she had the baby, the cat was jealous, even though they still paid a lot of attention to her. She would pee on anything that was the bay's including his crib. She didn't pee on anything else, only the baby's stuff.

Now my daughter's 2nd cat, and they've had her at least 4 years, has been peeing on my granddaughter's bedroom carpet, her bed......not anywhere else in the house. My granddaughter loves the cat, not mean to her........so what gives? My daughter had to put plastic on the mattress so the cat doesn't ruin the mattress but she can't put her expensive bed ensemble on it because she had a hard time getting the smell out. So why does the cat do these things?

I understand people use their best judgement in those situations but I prefer to give my cats the choice because two came from the Humane Society (and might have been outdoor cats before arriving there) and one was a dumpster diver so we don't want to restrict him. They choose to stay inside for the most part but we live on a quiet street with a fairly big yard and I know they will always come home, especially for dinner! In any case, I recommend keeping kittens inside with a litterbox and slowly introducing them to the outdoors as they grow.

Oh, I totally agree with you! I didn't mean to never show them the outdoors, just until there a bit bigger. I guess I worded that wrong. Believe me, we tried showing our cat the outdoors, but she was frightened. If she ever goes out, which is rare, she just hides underneath the house. Our other cat, who was a stray, goes outside sometimes, but is deaf and always paranoid when he's out there.

I'm a bit glad our cats tend to stay inside, because our last two were snatched by some beastie

Unfortunately, cats can be just as jealous as any dog. About the only thing you can do is either get rid of them, [I had to with yet another kittie who was positively psychotically jealous of my Nephew. He actually would lie in wait & attack both of us! :o :o :o ]. Or permanently ban him from the baby's room--as in keep the door shut.

We had another adopted cat who seemed to delight in challenging my Mom's authority by deliberately peeing in front of her in the house. Until my Mom had had enuff, grabbed him while he was still doing it, went to the front door, and literally, threw him out. All the while scolding him at the top of her voice. He was thenceforth banned from inside--which was similarly enforced. After a while, with a haughty flick of his tail, one day he left----for six mths.

When he came back, he literally crawled back, as he had become deathly ill. Probably with kitty pneumonia. My mom, while still insisting he stay outside, found a good box, lined it with blankets and placed it underneath the balcony, right by the door. She then wrapped him in a blanket, and added a hot water bottle. [which she re-filled several times a day to keep it/him warm. She also placed a litter box nearby for him. She hand feed him warmed pasteurized milk, mixed with broth, 3 times a day for the next 2 weeks. It worked.

It also worked on his behavior. Some light went on in his head during this, that this human can't be all bad--she'd saved his life after all. So he made a deal of sorts--he never again sprayed inside--at least in front of her !!! :giggle:

I like bunnet, Fiona, no matter what the French dictionary says.

My cats were found in a dumpster at about two weeks of age and raised in a foster home until they were ready to be adopted. I adopted them within five minutes of their being put up for adoption by the Humane Society where I live. They have never been outside. I can leave the door wide open and they have no interest in it. The only times they have been outside, they have been in their carriers. Their carriers are sitting out now as we are going to the vet on Saturday.

I always think I am fooling them by doing this, but somehow I don't think I really am. They sniffed them a few times and are now totally ignoring them.

Wait until Saturday when the male will cover me with scratches as I get him in the pen. They will both howl on their way to the car. When we get there, the oh so brave and mean male will refuse to come out of the carrier. I will say good luck to the vet and see what they can do. No vet has ever gotten him out of the carrier since he was a wee kitten.

Here is where I add my several cents. ;)

I feel that cats should NOT be allowed outside in most instances, particularly in urban and suburban areas, due to dangers from cars and danger to the bird population from their hunting. Also because as has been mentioned the dangers from coyotes and foxes, and most especially, feline leukemia which is highly contagious and fatal. When I adopted my two, the no-kill cat rescue group had me sign that I would not allow them outside. Peter would also tell you that it saves your neighbors' gardens from being litterboxes. If you live in the country on several acres of property it may be okay, however, this still puts your pets in danger of feline leukemia (and roving animals).

Regarding the peeing on the rugs, this is probably a behavioral problem and the vet can be consulted about the best course of action regarding solving it. I say probably because for some cats this may indicate kidney problems that could be solved with meds. If it is behavioral, my friend with four who had one that did this had her cat put on Prozac, which solved the problem (really!). The vet pharmacy compounds the Prozac into a liquid that is then flavored with chicken; they give the cat the Prozac every day and has made her quite a lot more docile. ^_^

Wow Prozac kitties ... what's the world coming to when our domesticated critters are in need of antidepressants.

Side note, prior to my mother's passing on there was this neighbor of ours that was quite the character, and not in a good way. She was rather questionable, after she moved out (just basically up and left without a word) they found that the house was literally a nightmare situation. She was in the habit of feeding the neighborhood strays and had absolutely no concern that these wild cats were breeding like mad, creating even more strays, the possums in the area were tending to benefit from the feeding as well ... and my mother was finding herself perpetually cleaning up messes that the throng of critters were leaving in our yard. Well we found that within the house that she'd lived in the toilet was absent :o ... who knows what she was doing for her "business" so to speak, there was fly paper all over the place with dead and dying flies riddled upon it, cat feces everywhere and a profoundly grotesque smell permeated the place. They nearly hazed the darn thing ... the manager talked me into taking a gander within the structure, I took all of one step in and refused to go any further. Told them that I knew immediately that this was a major health hazard and it took them weeks to clean it up and even remotely inhabitable. The thing about this is that that crazed woman was threatening my mother prior to my mother's death ... really p*ssed me off, p*ssed of the neighbors too. She even placed a threatening note on my mom's vehicle, she tended to curse her out as well. Man what a freakish situation that was, she never did a thing to me directly ... but once when I was at home at the same time as my mother she came to the door and started in on her. I simply made my presence known and she immediately toned it down and left.

There's a point at which one's love of animals can become a little too edgy ... especially if you're dealing with a mentally unstable type of person to begin with. This woman claimed to be an animal lover, but in my opinion she was the worst type of advocate that you'll ever come across. Very irresponsible to allow all those strays that much latitude ... the only way that the situation could be dealt with was to trap them (she tended to wonder around in the middle of the night releasing them from the traps) and hope that the humane society could get them properly vaccinated and treated so that they might (hopefully) find a better situation.

By the way I'm a big advocate of keeping cat's indoors and spaying or neutering them if you haven't the intention or the "plan" to deal with whatever might occur if they become pregnant and so forth, both of mine are indoor cats and they've got better insurance than I have (!) ... especially given the history of the area where I'm at and that irresponsible neighbor. At this point none of the remaining neighbors want to go through that again ... and I don't blame them one bit.

By the way I tend to have a deep respect and high regard for all creatures, well maybe a few insects I might not be terribly cuddly with ... but aside from that, I'm most definitely a fan of the diversity thats out there.

I have written volumes on how I feel about dogs. Of cats, on the other hand, I have little interest.

Sing the Changes
I had a neighbor come over to my house many years ago and tell me that my cat was howling outside their bedroom window at nights and causing them not to be able to sleep. I informed him that my cats do not go outside, so it was somebody else's cat, not mine.
