Full article LONDON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Wimbledon will pay women and men equal prize money for the first time at this year's grasscourt grand slam, All England Club chairman Tim Phillips said on Thursday. The tournament broke with its age old tradition to join the Australian and U.S. Opens in paying equal prize money across the board in all events and in all stages of competition. "This year the committee decided unanimously that time was right to move to equal prize money and bring to a close a long progression," Phillips told a news conference. Wimbledon had been criticised for years for maintaining a discrepancy in the prize money offered to its male and female competitors. |

I'm all for parity, but fair's fair. The men have to win 3 sets and play up to 5. Women play no more than 3. I know there's a good reason for this, but is it factored into the new equation? In any case, I'm sure working women the world over are very happy that Venus Williams now stands to make as much money as Roger Federer. |

About time? What nonsense. Politically correct claptrap. As Bill says, men play for longer, therefore deserve the bigger pay. It's the guys who are being descirminated against here. You have to take into consideration the quality on show too. Men's tennis is far superior and far more competitive. It's like saying pub bands should be paid on a par with signed acts for shows. Utter nonsense. |

But mens boobs don`t bounce when they are running around the court trying to hit the ball. And you say that womens tennis isn`t as entertaining as the men. pffffffffffffftttttt

I don't agree with that at all. Most men's tennis is boring power-plays. You never see a decent rally. Women's tennis is far more entertaining. I was speaking only about on-court time. |

tha vast majority of "female" tennis players don't have boobs...do they? Can't say i've noticed anyway. The vast majority of women's games are over and done with in an hour. Presumably so they can get home and get the place tidy for the breadwinner coming in. |

No argument there. I blame the coaches. It's not necessary and not all players feel the need to do it. |

Truth is the only leisurely persuit womewn should be allowed to participate in (in between housework) is horizontal jogging. If my missus is anything to go buy you girls need the practice. She always seems to come second. |

I too think that the women should expect to play 5 sets if they are to get equal prize money. |

I don't see why any of them should be paid just so all the good telly gets pushed around so yet more sport can bore us to tears. And don't get me started on the olympics. |

Women footballers play 90 minutes per game, just like the men - yet they get paid less. By the logic demonstrated on this thread, shouldn't they get the same?

That's illogical Andy, there isn't enough money in women's football to make that feasible. Why? Because it's feeble. |

I must admit I have some rather violent tendencies when it comes to sport and I'd much rather watch a male football player knock someone's teeth out by tackling them to the ground than a bunch of girls running around tapping each other on the shoulder. Then again, I was the one who was always sent off of the hockey field for threatening to knock the puck down my opponent's throat. Maybe I'm not the best person to ask. |

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/article2296858.ece Here's a follow-up article which comes off the back of Wimbledon's decision, but relates to the inequality between men & women's pay in general. I think it is very interesting reading. |

We still have the gender gap in the US, too. That is one of the major reasons I am all for women at Wimbledon receiving the same purse as the men. |

Even if they play two sets fewer than the men do Linda? Don't get me wrong I think the issue of equal pay for equal work is very important and support it wholeheartedly. I just don't think this is equal. |

Why pay the women equally if they aren't playing equally? It just doesn't make sense. Why get paid for less amount of games? Maybe they should increase the women's playtime then it make more sense to me. |
