I think rather than 'reporting' the e-mail Linda saw on here, she was responding to a message on the Obama website asking for any viral e-mails to be sent in so that, if they hadn't encountered them before, they could generate a response to them and, if they had seen them before, they could give the sender a reply and rebuttal to the points raised in the e-mail.

I think a lot of Obama's opponents have attempted to exploit a certain section of America's society's ignorance about him and done their level best to e-mail as many of these lies (muslim, terrorist, etc.) to as many people as they can. I only see it as admirable and wise for the Obama campaign to tackle these e-mails head on with antidote e-mails of their own. This campaign probably wouldn't be where it is right now without their use of the internet and the media to organise and spread the word.

As some of you know, I have been volunteering for this campaign since early January. We were told then to forward the kind of message that Mary Ann had posted to a certain email address. I first sent it to the Colorado to Obama group for feedback, as I wanted to know if Mary Ann wrote it or if it was sent to her or she found it on the internet. I was told that others had received or seen the same thing with the exact wording and told to forward it to the campaign, so I did.

I would do it again. It was full of so much misinformation and so much hate, that it has to be stopped.

Just voted here in Oxford, Ohio. It looks like the vast majority of students on my campus are going out to vote or have already voted. If the youth turn out, Obama is certain to win - and it appears that the youth are turning out! Note: I go to a university populated with rich kids who have conservative parents, and Obama is still ahead on our campus.

I have nothing but respect for McCain, in spite of his somewhat nasty campaign. He gave as much to America as anyone could and he will go down fighting like the soldier he is, regardless of the odds against him. This will be a very minor setback for someone that lived with the daily threat of torture for five and half years and he will always be remembered as a great American hero and true patriot who gave his country all that he had until there was nothing left to give. I still say he would make a great Secretary of Defense in anybody's administration.
Kind words from an Obama supporter. Thank you. :D

There are a lot people out there, and just about everyone it seems has his/her own very strong opinion about politics.

It is obvious that if you seek out blogs or columnists or radio hosts or pundits with opinions that are diametrically opposed to your own, you are often likely to walk (click?) away angered, flustered and perhaps even hurt by what you have heard or read (although not everyone might admit as much). If we have a compulsion to "check what those morons are on about now" repeatedly, we do have ourselves to blame at least a bit.

Likewise, if you constantly single out sources that are nearly always in 100% agreement with your personal views, perhaps as some sort of comfort blanket, you risk walling yourself in - creating a situation where your ability to connect with different-minded people becomes compromised where in fact a bit of manouverability would be helpful. This I think is true in more areas than politics.

To seek out the middle ground, perhaps prepared for a bit of give and take with those who you may only be partially in agreement with - that is what takes a fair amount of guts - and I admire that quality in people, they deserve credit for it. In an environment where talking heads on TV are constantly SHOUTING about their resentment about their ideological opponents, the more tempered middle-ground becomes more and more obscured. This, is a tragedy. Instead, we get people painted as "far left" or "far right" (and I'm ready to plead guilty of such behaviour at times myself) when the truth may be that there is more nuance to an individual than what their party of choice stands for...

...but, then again, some people are just plain nuts. :P

McCain is a true American in every sense of the word no matter what his politics are. Much of the nasty campaign was generated behind the scenes in the McCain camp and I am sure he felt reluctant to agree with many things that had his 'approval' attached. I have gotten a ton of Robo Calls from celebrities supporting McCain today: Hank Williams, Jr., Robert Duvall, Arnold Swarzenegger, Toby Keith, Screech from 'Saved By the Bell', etc.

I agree wholeheartedly. And as someone who has always been a fan of McCain, I am disgusted at what his party reduced him to and disappointed that he allowed it to happen. But if McCain is allowed to be McCain again, he still has a lot to give.

I knew Bill felt the same way I did.

Despite what anyone may think, when McCain first announced he was running I was intrigued. I loved the McCain of 2000. He was so brave to stand up in face of his own party to denounce Falwell and Robertson. Until he decided to run again.

I have deep admiration for McCain as a person to have served so admirably in Vietnam and to refuse to be allowed to go home just because his father was high up in the military was the ultimate in sacrifice.

If Obama carries Pennsylvania, McCain's avenues to 270 are almost completely exhausted.

Still, let's wait a bit longer to see the electoral college puzzle start falling into place...

If it's some comfort to the Republican voters here, it's looking unlikely that the Dems are going to reach a filibuster-proof 60 seats in the Senate. (Of course, cloture votes rarely consist of only one party.)

Jim Martin vs. Saxby Chambliss in Georgia may head for a run-off later this year, if no-one gets above 50% - but I haven't heard figures from that race for a while.

I understand it can be confusing when the networks project winners while only reporting a few percent of voting, sometimes showing the other candidate in the lead. What we do not see is the internal assessment of of how key counties vote as soon as hard votes begin to trickle in. Remember, early voting has been record-breaking as well and that adds to their base material. You can watch those called states as the percentages of counted votes creeps in, and unless it is a tight race (as in Virginia and Indiana still seem to be), the figures are unlikely to flip for the opponent. Florida was a reminder for networks not to call before all signs point in one direction.

To given the calls hold up, California + Washington state + Hawaii are now enough to give Obama the presidency. Same thing goes for CA + WA + OR

I basically said I hope those who say they're going to move out of the country because Obama won leave the country. I'd say the same thing to those Obama supporters if McCain won. I never could understand people who say things like that? If you don't like how the results came out, work on trying to change it. Quit moaning about it and move. I'm wondering how many friends I'm going to lose from my friends list. I have a few McCain supporters on my list who got all over me when I mentioned I was going to vote for Obama.

I think Obama is going to pick up Virginia and Florida. I think the networks are close to calling them. Indiana and North Carolina look more uncertain.

But... should he win the latter two as well, the news networks are formally allowed to call the presidency, as that would mean passing 270 electoral votes.

It's almost 5 in the morning here, so a small glass of port for me. Still hope to catch a little bit of sleep. Starting work late tomorrow!

It's a bit more balanced on PM.com, Heidi. Less sarcasm and more respect to each other on both sides. :frustrated:
It's only balanced if you are a conservative. It's all in the eyes of the beholder.
I'm stating a fact. Check it out yourself. They don't seem to turn people in to the Obama police either. That's just so weird and frightening.
You think I would post that without looking at pm.com. I saw my old "friend" Mikemc and his followers saying the usual stuff.

Mary Ann, I asked severral times if you wrote that statement yourself. You never replied. I found out that others had received the same words in an email. It couldn't sit without the campaign knowing about it. It was so horrible and full of lies.

If you posted what you did on pm.com, I would have done the same thing.

Obama is the president according to NBC. He has the world by his side, he knows that, it's up to him to make history, more than he already did and quit people's big racist mouth. A big step USA gave.

I know this outcome was somewhat expected - but still.... I am utterly stunned! The fact that the USA just did this... there is something in the back of my mind that didn't really believe they could. To see this country elect this man is a defining moment in history, and the roar from Grant Park at the top of the hour when they called it... I cannot imagine I will ever forget that for as long as I live. There is so much I want to say, but for a while, I'll just step back and watch the scene unfold in awe.

We're so very happy about the outcome! :D

Gary and I voted over two weeks ago on the first day of the early election and even though this is a "red state", and the outcome was pretty predictable, I like to think we made a difference, anyway.

Very proud of my home state for supporting Obama as strongly as they have.

Now I can relax, I have to admit I was a bit nervous about what would happen. I'm overwhelmed and very relieved!

Linda...I don't want to fight with you. I made the post you mentioned shortly after the death of my baby brother and my father in law (both died in September). I have never, ever felt that kind of anger before. I was in a rage and my post reflected that anger. I did write it myself based on something I read in a news magazine.

Molly, I owe you a public apology for popping off at you. You said what you felt but it wasn't a true reflection of who I am. You say what you feel and I usually don't mind that but I was mad at everyone. I'm sorry if I took some of that anger out on you.

I am disaappointed with the results of this election but, in the spirit of John McCain's gracious speech, I congratulate Obama's win.

OMG, I p*ssed a few of my friends off at Facebook. I wrote a note in response to one of my friends saying she was going to move to Canada since Obama looks like he's going to win.
Molly, people say things because they are angry and tired of the bullsh*t. My boyfriend has been known to utter we're moving to Canada if McCain wins during the campaign. It's only a veiled threat and no harm meant. Don't make a bad situation even worse for that person.

i know over here on our news channels they are saying projections - but doesn't that give false hope for people?? again sorry for ignorance but as people might know we only announce confirmed results over here - not from exit polls :-/ just seems weird - sorry
It is weird. The news is essentially calling the election and they are still voting out west.
Strange, huh? Didn't they do the same thing with Kerry and Carter? I guess they didn't receive the votes from the troops in time so they can't really call it until those are counted.
Has nothing to do with the troops. The projections are called as soon as the voting is over in that state. Once California's polling places closed at 8, one minute later the election was called. California is a winner take all state and Obama only needed California. with 55 electoral votes to win the prize.

And you're wrong about pm.com. A number of us were bashed around there because our views are centrist and not leaning to the right. We did not receive the respect you are now getting there.

Then again Hitler comparisons have been rampant the last 8 years, at least now finally people are getting offended.
Many of us found it offensive long before 8 years ago. It doesn't just bring the discussion to a lower level but it minimalises the legacy of his evil deeds.

I have to say that this has probably been one of the best nights of my life dealing with politics. My friends and I have been discussing, via text messages, how much hope we now have for America and hopefully the world. We feel that we can truly say that it feels great about being an American. We no longer feel the need to apologize to our foreign friends for not overcoming Bush in 2004, yes I have seen for myself how people in Germany and England have reacted to Bush - not good. Now we can say that America has come a long way to where we had a woman presidential candidate and a mixed race candidate (don't forget, Obama had a white mother from Kansas).

The US has truly won.
