OK, so I go into work Monday and I see frozen scones, muffins and cookies in the freezer and dessert samples in the fridge. The boss casually mentions that the breakfast pastries arn't profitable. He has rearranged my scheduale to back-up the chef which sort of makes me a prep cook even though this hasn't been discussed. He has said and done a few other things that indicate he doesn't care about the "sweet" side of things and basically I'm a luxury he can't afford....yet. I understand the business side of things but I am a pastry cook and that's what I want to do. I don't have to work but we all could use extra money and I do it because I have a passion and it makes me feel useful. Anyway, since he is sneaking about do I confront him or just look for another job and give notice? THX.

I actually already have three prospects. I'm really bad at confrontation, I'll probably cry but I hate to blindside him him too. Ugh

It really doesn't have to be a confrontation. If you feel you want to be up front about it all, acknowledge his changes but let him know it's not exactly what you want to be doing - it probably won't shock him. In the meantime, look for something that feeds your passion (no pun intended) while you're still earning and giving him the help he needs It should come as no surprise when you leave . Leave graciously, thank him, and look forward to doing something you really want to.

Thanks Barb, that's the way I am leaning. No burning bridges and all that. It bugs the heck out of me that he is being sneaky but I subscribe to the do unto others way of living so I think approaching him is the right way to go. One fear I have is that he may feed me (no pun intended) a line of bull to get me to stay and then I lose my other prospects. Maybe I am making this more complicated than it is.

Irene, perhaps your boss is afraid of confrontation, too, and is just making these changes without facing an uncomfortable conversation with you. He's probably afraid of losing your talents in the kitchen, so he's gone ahead and changed things with the hope that you'll stay anyway.

Barb and Linda made some great suggestions, but I have to ask -- is your boss the vindictive sort? I ask that, because where I work, anytime someone gives notice, the boss gets so mad that he tells them they can go ahead and leave -- NOW!

I wish you all the best in your job search. Applying for a job and going through interviews can be about as much fun as a root canal! :o

Bev, the guy deffinately has a very dark side. I mean he can be a real nasty son of a b.

I have decided to tell him today that I am looking for another job and when he asks why I will tell him that the job has become something I didn't apply for and it's better for both of us if I leave. I will tell him I'll give him 2 weeks notice when I find a job (already found 2). If he tells me to leave that's fine with me but he is already short staffed and I don't think he will. If he makes it uncomfortable for me I'll just give him 2 weeks wether I have a job or not.

I met with a real pastry chef ( :P ) yesterday and she knew my bosses type to a T. After speaking with her I have decided I have to leave. I don't want to be there anymore.

Irene, I'm glad you have a plan of action. The worst feeling is uncertainty. Sounds like you have some very good options in your future and that you're doing the right thing. Even if he's not worthy, I think that your offering 2 weeks notice says a lot about your character and in the long run, you have to live with yourself, not him.

Oh what the hell....throw a pie in his face on your last day :D

Well I told him and he was very cool. I actually think he was relieved because I think he only kept me out of a sense of loyalty and appreciation. He even offered to help me out and sne dcake business my way on any parties that are held at the resturant. OK so now I just have to find another job!!!

Good luck, Irene. When I found my new job (which I am truly enjoying), my former boss was totally blind sided and told me to leave. Then he kept sending me emails about how to do things. Go figure.

2 job interviews done. One is a cake decorator at a grocery store that is just opening around the corner from my house. The other is Asst Pastry Chef at a Roy's restaurant about 5 miles away. One is days, one is nights. Both offer great opportunities but I'm hoping for the Roy's one. Fingers crossed for me ok!

Thanks guys. It will be a really challenge and learning experiance. Roy's is a fine dining Hawaiian fusion restaurant. He has quite a few all over the country. The way she discribed the action in the kitchen makes me think of Hells Kitchen w/Ramsey. High energy, moderate stress, lots of yelling! Can't wait!!
