4 Years Later...; The Station Nightclub Fire

On the evening of Thursday, February 20, 2003, a fire broke out in a nightclub here in Warwick, RI. It was the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, killing 100 people and injuring more than 200. Ninety-six perished on the night of the fire, and four died later from their injuries at local hospitals.

Watching the news tonight brought back many of the tears I cried that night. Many of my friends and family liked to go to The Station, it was cheap and a good night out. I still remember getting a phone call that night telling me to turn on the news, it was live coverage. My sister had wanted to go and I didn't know if she had or not. I stayed up all night worrying about her but didn't want to wake her if she hadn't. At 6am, her normal time she got out of bed, I called. I must admit I was overjoyed when she answered.

For the deaths of 100 people the owners of the nightclub recieved a slap on the wrist. One got 4 years while his brother got a suspended sentence. They say time heals all wounds but tonight here those wounds bleed again.

I just wanted to ask that you would consider saying a prayer or send good thoughts to those who weren't able to get to talk to their loved ones again. As well as for those who continue to wear the signs of this tragedy. Thank you.

I'm certainly praying. I remember when this happened. I was about... 10?... wow, such a long time ago. Everyone was so saddened, and for good reason.
all of those pictures on the wall...
what makes them fall?

Tony, I had no idea that you lived near the site of that horrible fire. I was at home that awful night, watching CNN, when they broke in with the story. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was horrible!! :o :o

I don't know if you remember the fire that destroyed the site of the original MGM Grand in Las Vegas (it's where Bally's now stands) but my brother's best friend was killed in that fire. He had won a sales contest at his job and was there enjoying an all-expenses-paid trip. He was only 29 years old. He was in the casino, on the ground floor and probably died from smoke inhalation, or was trampled in the flight to escape the inferno.

Those pictures on the news of The Station brought all those horrible memories back. I really feel for those who died, and especially for those loved ones who had to witness the horror of how their loved ones spent their last moments.

I'm so glad that your sister is still here. Isn't it odd how one small decision can turn out to be the one that saves your life? :hmm:

Why?

Very sad indeed, Tony. Sending my thoughts to all of those who lost someone in that tragedy.
