ATM Machines That Charge

I'm appalled by the recent trend of ATM machines which charge people to withdraw their money - at the railway stations my company serves, all of the free withdrawal machines have been replaced with machines which will charge people £1.85 per withdrawal. Luckily, by law, machines have to inform customers that they are going to be charged before the are invited to complete or decline the transaction - but banks are certainly rich enough to provide free ATMs for all.

I wish every single person would boycott machines which charge, just as I am. It's pure greed - nothing more, nothing less. Robbing b*stards.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

That is very annoying. I didn't know that more are appearing replacing those that don't charge. Very annyoing. Its bad enough you have to be careful incase the machine has been hacked by someone who can get access to your pin number and card details. I'm not going to continue because the thought of it isn't nice, but there's nothing you can do about it unfortunately.

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
Here is America if you use your banks ATM then you are not charged. If you use a universal ATM then you are charged for the transaction. It has been that way as long as I can remember universal machines being in service. I agree, though that they could certainly afford not to tack on a surcharge for withdrawing funds.
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand
John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' !

My experience has been the same as Betsy's. If I use an ATM that does not belong to my bank, I am charged. The bank I am with lets me have 4 free withdrawals at a bank that doesn't belong to them and that is how I got money while in London. I was able to find ATMs that didn't charge me at Heathrow and near my hotel.

It's the classic tactic, get you hooked, then up the price.

By the way, "ATM machine" is redundant. ;)

I boycott the machines that charge as well Andy. It really makes me angry. The introduction of ATM's cut staffing in the bank branches so they don't have to pay the staff. The least they can do is to offer free access to our money at the machine.

I'm lucky enough not to have to use machines where a fee is charged because there are plenty of the no-charge variety around

I don't have a ATM card anymore, but when I did I tried to avoid those machines that weren't my bank's machine. I've heard news reports on banks charging and their excuse is always they need to charge because they have to keep up the matainence of the machines. You would think that they would have enough money to repair the machines.

That's part of the reason I go into a bank, the old fashioned way, and get my money. :D

Linda ... out of curiosity, what bank do you use? On the actual topic, yeah that's been the case here in America for years now ... they make bank (excuse the pun) on the various fees that they charge folks for everything from online banking to ATM charges.

Although credit unions can be a good deal better to work with, just depends upon how much one travels outside of their respective region I suppose.

I very seldom use an ATM card, maybe twice a year. Our bank also has free ATM usage but we use a small community bank that only has a few other banks. I prefer charging whatever I can, because I love the points.

I use two banks. The one that doesn't charge the fees on up to four transactions a month is a local bank, only in two states. When I talked to them about foreign currency, they said the best thing to do was to use ATMs, that I would get the best exchange rate that way and it was much safer than carrying cash or even travelers checks on the plane.

When I went to Canada, I used the ATM inside my friend's bank. In the UK, there was a line at the ATMs outside of Customs, so that must be the way to go.

Here in the US, I get most of my money through a bank, not ATMs. When I lived in the mountains, there wasn't a bank. If I needed cash, I had to use an ATM that charged me if I wasn't going into town. It was still cheaper than a tank of gas just to get cash.

I use my debit card for everything as it earns miles.

We have been doing that here for years. My bank only charges customers of other banks, and with 20,000 machines in the city I am relatively sure I will find one if needed.

Just give us your PIN number to your ATM machine, be quiet and shut up.
