Anybody planning on watching the Grammys tonight?

I'm hoping to see our Paul there, so I'll be watching for sure!

I might flip to it a little bit, especially to see The Police, but for the most part I'm going to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Dracula.

I used to really be into these sorts of things, but at the moment for some reason I'm not so inclined to really "commit" (thinking I might have some commitment issues in general ... oversharing  ).

At any rate I suppose I'll check out the Police performance, but beyond that I don't think I'll end up watching the whole thing.

I'm sorry, but who cares if Paul is there? I've discovered so many great acts that have come out. Some people here think that all music sucks now, but you just want to listen to what you're comfortable with. I have discovered The Killers, Goldfrapp, The Artic Monkeys, Corrine Bailey Rae and even Gwen Stefani and I like all of them. Not all music sucks today.

Well now, Molly -- could you possibly be more harsh?? I think it is more than a little presumptuous of you to say that people you don't even know don't like today's music because they only want to listen to what they're comfortable with.

Sometimes I'm really just flabbergasted by your comments. :hmm:

And by the way, have you ever noticed how many posts you begin with the words "I just hate it when", or "I think some people are so stupid when they", or the like.

Have you ever considered making any positive comments for a change?? Try it sometime. It just might change your outlook.

OK, back to the topic at hand. ;)

The Police were the very first thing before they even announced what the show was. It was cool -- sorry you missed it Olen if you were looking for it. Don't know if they're coming back, though I suspect they are, I would think to close the show certainly. I wasn't going to watch anymore just scan YouTube tomorrow for what other performances I could find.

Another thing - Carrie Underwood is totally the sh*t! Never paid much attention to her because I'm definitely not an "Idol" fan, but she is a vocal powerhouse. She could have easily taken Reese Witherspoon's role in "Walk the Line".

Also, if you didn't like Justin Timberlake's song "Round and Round" or whatever it was called, then you missed out on this generation's George Michael. He's a real musician now, everybody!

From what I saw can I say Corrine Bailey Rae rocks da house. She's such a great singer. I have her album and her voice is so beautiful.
I didn't see Mary J. Blige perform but she looked wonderful.

Not when John Mayer's "Try!" was a contender. That was a completely kick ass and NON-political statement type of album.

That's the only reason they won as much as they did.

EDIT:
Let me clarify something before someone says something. I respect those who don't like the Dixie Chicks, but I have their latest album and thought it was deserving of a Grammy. I'm not a huge John Meyer fan, so of course I didn't care that he lost to the Chicks out. I was actually rooting for Corrine Bailey Rae anyway.

You know I like the Dixie Chicks ... well "Fly" and "Wide Open Spaces" ... but I wasn't able to get "into" any of this latest material primarily due to it being so infused with their frustration at how they were treated by the country music association after that performance in London when they made their statements about Bush.

Too bad that occurred, because I think it pushed them off track toward a darker area that just doesn't really need anyone else driving into it.

By the way Chad, I totally dug what John Legend and John Meyer brought to that segment. Thinking that Legend has a really nice quality to his vocal style and he's progressing in his artistic development nicely.

None of you have any idea as to what John Mayer brings to the party. He is Stevie Ray Vaughan meets Jimi Hendrix meets today's pop. The guy is the complete package! He deserved the Grammy he won, plus he deserved the Grammy he lost to the Dixie Chicks. They did not have a commercially sucessful year, but they had a politically popular album. And to win as much as they did for that reason sucks.

I was so happy when John Mayer won with his album Continuum, but TRY is an even better album in my opinion. That album kicks major ass. I can't go a week without listening to it. And besides, John sang Gravity - one of my favorite songs. He did shorten it though! The guy is brilliant!!

Sting looked hot, but damn it - Roxanne has been running through my head since!

Got to love the Peppers too!

And what about Buckcherry???

Yes, I know he's from Minnesota, and don't get me wrong, its cool to see a fellow Minnesotan at an awards show, or the super bowl, or whatever.
But, thats where the line draws.

Over all, I found it quite disappointing.
Of course, maybe I just got myself confused with the Music Awards?? :pinch:

You're right about the alternative category, unless I missed something, which is quite possible as I didn't watch the whole thing.

In case anyone's interested, a complete listing of winners. Some odd categories, some equally odd winners, in my opinion. I doubt if many of these winners will still be here in 10 years.

I forgot Paul was nominated for "Jenny Wren".

http://www.grammy.com/Grammy_Awards/49th_show/list.aspx ;)

cheers for that Bev

don't know when this is on over here - plus didn't realise that Pet Shop Boys were popular in the US

I'm happy walk the line got best soundtrack :)

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
Outside of a few performances...and the obvious people watching...I was a bit bored. I kept switching channels and coming back to it.

I do have to agree that it was a pretty boring Grammy show, from what I saw. I caught the last hour or so of it and I almost fell asleep.

I admit that I have never given John Mayer much of a chance. But I really liked the sound of his guitar during his performance. Perhaps it's time to give him a listen.

As for the Dixie Chicks, I love politically charged albums. I haven't heard their latest yet (it's still on my wish list), but if they truly did win because their album was political, I'm okay with that. I'm guessing that the music has to be pretty good too, though.

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
I think Justin Timberlake has come a long way, and I most definately think he will be a force in the industry for as long as he wishes. Just because it might not be the genre of music that I like the best doesn`t mean I can`t recognize a gifted artist and entertainer.
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand
John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' !

Also, if you didn't like Justin Timberlake's song "Round and Round" or whatever it was called, then you missed out on this generation's George Michael. He's a real musician now, everybody!

I couldn't disagree more. Does this generation really need a George Michael anyway? :P

I was really pleasantly surprised by him, Andy! Until the end where he had the little mini-cam thing going on. That did dampen what I had considered a really good tune of his.

My two cents on Timberlake ... yeah I think he was playing, after all this time in the spotlight with people questioning him and associating him with merely being an ex-boy bander it would make sense that he'd take a few lessons. Doesn't necessarily mean that he did anything all that profound on the instrument, aside from not blowing it and possibly memorizing the material (i.e. it's doubtful that he wrote it ... still thinking that he's probably a bit like Mariah Carey in that respect, she gets authorship credits for humming the melody and then someone else actually translates that into sheet music).

My two cents on Meyer ... been saying that guys awesome for some time, here and elsewhere. I've seen him a couple of times, and by seen him I mean I was in the 3rd or 4th row ... this was prior to him really having more than a couple of songs out. He's been rather consistent and like I said "live" that guy really excels ... he's very fluid and I agree with you Chad he does do his role models good (i.e. I can see the Hendrix comparison, but more so with the Stevie Ray Vaughn and Clapton ... he knows how to handle the Strat ... granted he gets some odd looks on his face at times, but I felt it to be charming and attributed it to his blues influences).

On the Dixie Chicks I kind of have to agree ... that's the way these things work though. Same thing with the Academy Awards. People may win due to actual output, but they may win due to their peers giving them an "adda boy" type of slap on the back due to any number of things (i.e. how they handle personal crisis', doing something original or that challenges the status quo, because they were previously overlooked for something that everyone balked at being overlooked). The Chicks had been treated poorly by their own genre (Country music industry dropped them and they were forced off many radio stations in many regions of the country following that incident in London, their CD's were destroyed as radio promo events (hmmm, who does that remind you of), and they were receiving death threats from people that claimed themselves to be Christians ... pretty sick stuff really?) ... they ended up canning their ties to that industry and signed with a more pop/rock based label, and then put out a CD that essentially had a lot of steam to it about all that crap. I suppose to the recording industry it was too tempting not to reward them for all of this stuff ... a Cinderella story of sorts, probably a way to say "we like you, we really do like you" (LOL).

Rather lengthy comment, but hopefully it wasn't too terribly boring or off base. ;)

Wish I had seen that! I love Prince and never tire of him. We had just arrived home from a very long weekend in Vegas where we tried to see Love. Didn't work out. 30 min or so into the show, the hotel's fire alarms went off. A few minutes later, one of the performers came onstage to announce they would resume the show in a few minutes. Just as they were about to leave the stage, the fire sprinklers went off completely shutting the show down. There was no fire so it completely sucked that this had to happen. We were quite tired when we got home and could not concentrate much on tv.

When you say 'R&B', do you mean it in it's true original R&B sense or this bastardized smooth hip-hop they call R&B? :P

I've been checking out some reviews for John Mayer on amazon & must admit that I'm a little interested.

How can I say no to you two? Barb is my friend in psychedelia and has seen Jefferson Airplane live, and Chad is an avowed Telecaster fan. I can't go wrong following you guys!

I've also noticed that JM is on the cover of the new Rolling Stone magazine for the title story on the "New Guitar Gods," along with John Frusci......whatever, from the Chili Peppers and Derek Trucks. So he is obviously doing something right. I will try TRY, and/or another album by him.

But I have to stay away from that "...body is a wonderland..." song. At least for awhile longer.

Way to go Jones. I think there is definitely some room in your collection for some John Mayer. I really never thought I would like him, but just goes to show you, you can always be surprised.

You know who else I saw that I had completely forgot about, but your mentioning of Jefferson Airplane sparked my memory - Paul Butterfield Blues Band - now that was one jammin' band!

You're right. And I don't know a lot about them. A great suggestion. John Mayer and Paul Butterfield Blues Band. They will be my weekend projects!

When you say 'R&B', do you mean it in it's true original R&B sense or this bastardized smooth hip-hop they call R&B? :P

I've been checking out some reviews for John Mayer on amazon & must admit that I'm a little interested.

But he's dating Jessica Simpson, isn't he? What does that say about the guy? :P

It says he's entering a Michael Jackson-esque period of insanity which will be followed by a long musical drought. :D

The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today
Is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips
Then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.--dcTalk
