Hi everyone, The last couple of days have perhaps been the most bizarre, disturbing and disappointing since our doors opened for business last May. Our friendly message board and it's reputation runs the risk of being scarred by the fighting that has dominated the off-topic section and we simply cannot allow that to happen. Good message boards with responsible, tolerant, community-minded members really shouldn't need moderating and we set up Strawberry Fields as a place where we could all feel free to express ourselves and discuss exactly what we wanted to discuss without feeling oppressed by the contraints of an overly restictive admin policy or zealous moderating team. We hoped that this place would basically run itself and that our members would act in an adult manner, be respectful and civilized to each other without us having to do much in the way of censorship or discipline - not because we're lazy and don't want the work, you understand - but because that was the kind of forum we'd want to be members of. We see our role here as peacekeepers and to only step in when we have to. Newspapers have editors who pre-approve all of the content before the paper is published. The administrators and moderators don't have that luxury and have little control over the content here. Sure, we can delete posts and suspend members but it is very much like a child punching another child in the playground; You can remove that child and suspend him from the school but, whichever way you look at it, there's still a child in the playground who has been punched. That's the nature of forums - the members control the content and, as a consequence, have to take the vast majority of responsibility for what appears on it. We don't "let" people post anything - people post what they want. If it is inappropriate, hurtful or against the forum rules then it will be removed, but the fact remains that you have the opportunity to initially post anything here and we have to trust people not to abuse that opportunity - and if we can't trust those people then those people have to be removed from our community - it is as simple as that. This brings me to "speaking your mind" and "telling it like it is". Honesty is a wonderful thing, but if you are posting something personal about another member that you know is going to offend or hurt their feelings then we strongly urge you not to. Be tolerant. We are an internet community with members from all around the world - perhaps not even as culturally diverse as I hope we'll be one day - but diverse enough certainly to have many different opinions, ideas and behaviour. There are some things which are definitely out of the question, such as racism, homophobia and comments driven by hatred and prejudice - I hope that we can all agree that those have no place on this board - but everything else, all of our other opinions and behaviours, should be met with a certain amount of respect and tolerance. I was saddened by what I perceived to be a group of people continually making mildly unkind comments about a particular person's self-image, behaviour and posts and, when that 'victim' decided to leave as a result, I was absolutely appalled by some of the comments that were posted about one person in that group of people who, to be frank, didn't do a great deal wrong - certainly nothing to deserve the vilification she received by some. If we are presented with evidence that people have been PMing members with abuse or insults then they will be dealt with accordingly. PMs are not exempt from forum rules. If you wish to discuss private matters via PMs then that is wholly appropriate. If you wish to insult and abuse members via PM then you will be - at the very least - given an official warning. While we don't want to see anyone stop posting here as a result of other people's behaviour and attitudes towards them, I believe that you're doing yourself and nobody else any favours by being supposedly "driven out" by members who you feel are criticizing you. The right and sensible way to approach the problem is to inform one of the administrators or moderators about what have been said and how it is making you feel. That way we can help and act as an intimediatary by, at the very least, letting people know how their comments and behaviour is impacting on that member's life and enjoyment of the board. We will not knowingly let anyone be bullied or persecuted on this forum and will do all we can to put a stop to it up to and including banning the perpetrators, if necessary. To surmise, please think about the impact that your posts may have on other people. When people state, "I had to say something", most of the time they really didn't. The vast majority of the time all it would take would be a little bit of tolerance and to do the right thing - the nice thing. If people really are behaving in a way you find to be of concern, then pass the problem onto the moderators. There's a fine line between "telling it how it is" and being cruel and between "tough love" and being brutal. There are a whole range of people on here from very outgoing, robust characters to members who are fragile and need to be met with understanding. This is real life. There are human beings behind every single word on this message board and you never know just what may happen to someone when you give it to them with both barrels. You have to ask yourselves just how much you want on your consicience. There are many hurt and upset people on Strawberry Fields right now. I say instead of criticising, reach out with understanding and love. Instead of blaming, try forgiving. We all make mistakes, we all say things we regret and we have to move on from them. I hope that everyone here wants the best Strawberry Fields we can possibly have and that Strawberry Fields is a place for all of the members, not just a select handful of regular posters. We don't have to all love each other - we don't even have to like each other, but we do have to turn the other cheek sometimes, co-exist, ignore the things that we don't like and concentrate on the things that we do. Feuds and criticising each other are destructive and I hope that we all want to build on what we have here, not tear it down. Thank you for listening. Strawberry Fields Forever. Andy (on behalf of the administrative team) |

I agree with the statements made in Andy's open letter. (I just wanted to point out this section of the letter because many times I have heard (not on this forum, by the way) people make statements such as "it's only the internet, don't take it seriously" - I have always found this to be a strange attitude because we are all humans and using a computer to communicate does not mean people somehow no longer have feelings). |

Andy, you articulate well my friend
. I know as the Owner/Operator of this site it is not easy to walk the tightrope as well as you and Fiona have. You do know, and can relate though, how difficult it is sometimes to hold your breath, bite your tongue, or be ever so tolerant. Allow me to use that 'other' site for example. This is just to illustrate the difference between Moderating a site as opposed to just being a posting member of the community. I mean nothing by this. There was a poster there who used to follow me around all over the place typing Beatnut for President, Beatnut is God, Beatnut is Cool..etc. He seemed to be a young fellow who meant no harm and you, and I quote you, had a bad day maybe at work and bashed the living daylights out of him by saying :his head is so far up Beatnut's ass". Me and you inadvertently for a moment, didn't see eye to eye on this. Now I can surely relate to you because having to read all that stuff grates on your nerves and sometimes it pushes you over the edge where you can't help yourself and in a moment of mental lapse you blurt out some stuff that you most likely will regret later on. I doubt now if that fellow was a posting member here doing that stuff you would take the same stance. Maybe that guy saw me as someone to latch on to so he wouldn't be afraid to post or whatever the reason be. Now when I did something similar here to KK, I thought about it, and after one kind hearted member here posted something a light went on, and I waited a few posts later to publically apologize to KK. I felt bad because I didn't know her circumstances surrounding her troubles and insecurities. However, that never excuses a person for annoying behavior. The same way it wouldn't excuse me for being less tolerant of any other member here by shooting my rapid fire mouth off, or telling it 'like it is'. The part that really disturbed me in all this was the way Tassy was treated by our 'loving' community. Where was the tolerance and love for her? Why did everyone so concerned about KK's feelings forget the feelings of Tassy? I still for the life of me can't find a thing that she said wrong other than KK was not the only person in the world to have a bad childbirth experience. So for that we burn her at the stake? She was right, afterall I do believe she has given birth to a couple of kids and happens to be a Nurse. I'm sure she's well qualified to make that statement. The fact that she received PMs from others here blasting her and saying she was mean to KK was pretty damn ballsy. Who the hell are those people to privately harass Tassy? So being that Tassy is a long time friend to me I naturally will defend her at any cost. The same way there are people here who would be upset if KK left, there are also many others who would be upset if Tassy left. In any event I do believe that this board is a real nice site and a nice place to come to because you and Fiona make it that way and believe me, your efforts are greatly appreciated or we wouldn't be here. In fact I did give a few 'old members' from that 'other' site a link to this site in the hopes they'd also be welcomed here. I never say i'm not guilty for shooting first and asking questions later. It's my nature. When I think i'm wrong I have no problem admitting the fact. I'm sorry for my personal outbursts here, but I do refuse to back down when I feel a friend is being wrongfully crucified. OK, i'm done because i'm tired of hearing myself tawk. Later people!

Yes, I remember that person. I remember apologising as well, but you're right - being the owner/administrator is very different. I said a lot of things at the 'other place' that I wouldn't say here! It has made me grow as a person and I have to approach things with objectivity and a greater need to understand. It involves a certain amount of tongue biting sometimes as well, I'll readily admit.
I'm inclined to agree with you. It does seem odd to subject Tassy to the same treatment she was accused of behaving towards Nat and, to be honest, there are other members I believe that were just as, if not more, culpable for making Nat feel like she was unwelcome here.
I think Tassy was perfectly entitled to her opinion on the matter and, conversely, people were entitled to disagree with her if they wished. However, some of the comments blasting Tassy were disproportionate to the things said to Nat, even if it was a little obvious that she and a few others disliked and, more importantly, expressed their dislike of Nat's posting behaviour - and I really find it hard to understand how this whole matter has been blown up out of all proportion.
No doubt there would be! Of course, someone's popularity will never be a barrier to them receiving disciplinary action if they break the forum rules - no one person is bigger than the forum - but nobody has faced any discipline over this matter. We've chosen to make a statement and attempt to steer the board in the right direction as well as talking to the people involved individually. I have asked Tassy that, if she has received and insulting or hurtful PMs, to forward them to me and the people responsible will be dealt with accordingly, but she has declined to do so. Needless to say that if anyone receives hurtful or distressing PMs then they should approach the moderating team about them or, of course, there is nothing we can do.
Thanks - we do our best. We really do! Of course, anyone is welcome and welcomed here. Apart from that mad woman on the Lennon site, apparently.
Sure, that's your personality, I understand that - but sometimes it just doesn't pay to shoot first and apologise later because some people don't heal as well as others and some souls are a little less robust than others. This is a message board - it is absolutely fine to shoot from the hip and say whatever you like about topics and subjects, but when people make the other members themselves the targets, that's when you have to watch what you say a little. Just a little kindness, that's all we're asking.
Thanks for your input, Mike. Later.

Very well written, Andy. I think some people come on here for a variety of reasons. There is a certain comfort level we all feel with each other due to the nature of why we are here! Once in awhile we all have a bad day and 'vent.' We just need to remember that some people are more sensitive than others. I am around a lot of outspoken people so I've had to develop a hard 'shell.' Others just don't have that. I just want to say that I appreciate this board and I find myself coming here more and more. I just hope that some of the members lighten up a little and have more tolerance for others who come here to relieve a little stress by being a little crazy. We are all from different parts of the world and need to remember that. I live in California and everyone knows we are pretty crazy here!! Tolerance for lifestyles, job stresses, and personality differences need to be considered for all of us to get along. Thanks again to Fiona and Andy for tolerating all of us!!! |

You know we can go arounds about this.but, like someone said, carrying on about it is making it worse. Andy, did you not say if have problem with someone what they say pm them. I do not want Tassy or nat hurt. I think We just need to get along. And If my PM hurt Tassy in any way I am sorry. I was trying to make apoint that a pm to nat would have been better. But, I been thinking next time I just mind my bussiness and let mod and Admin take care of it. My words always seem to get twisted. Maybe, that is because, I don't know how to express, my words right. Do to my spelling. No means, did I intently try hurt Tassy. and Yes, it has been brothering me that she hurt. and Natalie. But, at same time It has me all emotional. I just want it all to go away and stop. I like to Add If I hurt tassy in any way I am Sorry. |

As I keep only to a few threads, I am completely unaware of the incidents that are mentioned in the open letter. I am saddened to hear that this has happened. It seems to me that the majority of the members at this forum are above this type of behaviour, but, as a forum grows in numbers, you can expect that problems will arise. It is truly unfortunate that somebody has been hurt enough that they feel they have to leave. I still consider this forum to be superior to other forums as far as friendliness and consideration are concerned, and I hope that your letter, Andy will help to curb any further similar incidents. I don't know who it is that has left, but I hope that s/he has had enough positive experiences here that the negative will, in time, be replaced with something positive. I expect that this forum will be able to continue on with the high standard that you have set for it, Andy, and that most of the members have adhered to. Strawberry Fields Forever! |

Great post Andy... though I'm sorry it had to come to all this... I think I've seen some of things said in public threads but I certainly don't want this to continue so I will continue to keep it to myself... One reason I don't post often on the "other board" is due to have some of posts there have been responded to (mainly the now thank god dead seal thread") made me uncomfortable to post and those who know me know how hard it can be for me to post due to me being a bit introverted. I think I am feeling more comfy as time goes on and I hope will take what Andy says to heart and who knows... maybe some day you'll say "Quiet Dean" don't you ever quiet down?"

Same here, Bill. Sometimes biting one's tongue, or at least being respectful of the other person, can lead to a good honest conversation where no one is heaping mounds of anger upon the other or being disrespectful of one another. Andy, brilliant post. ps, don't forget I have the whip and I'm not afraid to use it, even if you've been good

Andy and Fiona have been very fair the last few days. I have to admit that I said a few things that maybe I shouldn't, but a friend of mine's feelings was hurt and I thought I would defend her. I did get both sides of the story and I maybe should have just have been less brutal with what I had to say. I can't take back what I said, and I know I hurt some feelings myself. I'm going to bite my tongue however on this subject because I still could say something I could regret. |

I won't pretend that I think it's neccessary to always make comparisons with other message boards in the negative way you do here as this board is such a good enough place without having to do that but I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment of any forums should be able to run with the members being able to self moderate.

Thanks Sarah! All I can say about your second paragraph is that it's fair comment and I hope, as time goes on, that such comparisons will lessen and eventually disappear.

Who needs soap operas when we have message boards. Things like this always remind me that I am not one of the cool kids, privy to these little inside dramas. It is nice to see that I am hardly alone. When I read the opening post I thought it was about my argument with Bill over kangaroo sex. I still think he is a pervert, but I am willing to be more tolerant of his deviant ways now. |

Like several other people I have no idea about what went on and caused so much upset. This is the best and friendliest site that I know and I hope it stays that way. Andy and Fiona are to be thanked for starting this site in the first place.Lets not let them down by petty squabbles. We all have one thing in common here and it's our love for The Beatles and their music. So any disagreements should be 'We Can Work It Out' not snide attacks on the board. Remember 'All You Need Is Love' |
