Dear friends, I just joined a global virtual peace march demanding that the new US Congress stop President Bush's escalation in Iraq and demand a real peace plan, and I thought you might be interested. Please see the email below. Subject: Join Saturday’s global peace march… without Leaving Your House! This Saturday, hundreds of thousands of Americans will march on Washington DC to demand peace and justice in Iraq and the Middle East. We can be there too, raising a global voice of solidarity -- through our own worldwide virtual march. Time is short, so add your voice and join the march today! http://www.avaaz.org/en/global_peace_march/ Avaaz supporters in Washington have offered to carry real banners and placards at the US demonstration - showing how many internet marchers from all round the world are joining in. We will carry the flag of each country that generates more than 500 internet marchers, so tell your friends! With American opposition to this war mounting, 45,000 of us from over 100 countries have already joined the call to oppose Bush's military escalation and demand a real plan to end this war. Can we get 75,000 - even 100,000 people from round the world to join the march before Saturday? Click here to join the march – http://www.avaaz.org/en/global_peace_march/ This could signal the rebirth of the US peace movement. We need to show them the world is on their side. Let's bring our call for peace to the streets of power in Washington. Join the global peace march and tell your friends today! With hope, Ricken, Paul, Tom, Rachel, Galit, Lee-Sean and the rest of the Ceasefire Campaign (now Avaaz.org! ) Team |

Oh...I just saw this! I tried to sign the petition and add my "voice", but it immediately took me to an encrypted page and asked for a donation. I realize it's non-profit, but not if it won't let me join without my having to pay. It's such a great cause too...and I stand behind it totally. Thank you Fiona...I appreciate your bringing it to our attention. I get newletters from other peace groups asking for my participation in signing petitions to our Senators and House Representatives, so I will try to post other similar messages when I hear about those. They're due for another protest in March. Merry |

If you got taken to the encrypted page and were asked for a donation, that means that your name & message have been added to the petition & virtual 'march'.

Nothing to feel foolish about - I thought exactly the same thing when I got the donation request - but when I investigated further I realised that it was in addition to the petition & not 'tied in'.

When are you bleeding heart liberal lunatic tree huggers going to wake up and realize that war is good for the human race. In the past we had disease and famine to help thin the herd, but with today's science and technology reducing these deaths, we need something to ensure that only the rich and powerful survive while the weak, the poor, and people from New Jersey are naturally selected to oblivion. All we are saying is give war a chance. |

I received an email from the site, so I know my name is on the petition. Hey, I'm one of those aging hippies who protested the Viet Nam war. I never spit on a vet and never would. Those vets, many of whom were my friends and family, deserve to be honored. I don't like war, but I support the troops. |

I support the troops by not wanting them killed - is that reasonable?

That's exactly how I feel, (((Fiona)))! I recently had a young man in an army uniform come in to buy a few things at the store and I told him I admired him for what he was doing, but that I didn't support the cause, and he smiled and said he understood. I wished him well...it was all I could do, he was flying out in a couple of weeks for the middle east. I would never spit on anyone, and although I never was a "Hippy" in the literal sense, I am proud to embrace their peaceful ways! Merry

I don't like war but it's necessary. Oh, and I don't support a lot of the Beatles' ideals. I just like their music. |

Why is war 'necessary' exactly? There have been plenty of unneccesary and unjustified wars in history... and, indeed, in the present. That way too much of a sweeping statement for my liking. |

It's a very selective view of history. War can sometimes be necessary and it is sometimes justified. No-one denies that World War II was a just war. But how did it come about? It was the result of culpable short-sightedness immediately after World War I. And what good came from that? Who was freed or saved then? I remember a TV program where a doctor was trying to assess the mental competence of an old lady so he asked her when World War II started. She said 1918. The she elaborated, "Treaty of Versailles - it was inevitable." And war will continue to be inevitable so long as people have the notion that it's honourable and necessary. Sometimes it is - more often it isn't. |

The American Revolution was necessary. We had to get rid of those evil British b*stards. |

Oh I know I'm a political science major. I just take a realist approach, while most people here take an idealist approach. |

Great way of putting it Lissa. The downfall to an realist is that they think to much and do put into action until it's to late. I'm realist based, too but I allow my idealisms to take shape. Being a political science major does not mean you have to create this thought that war is necessary. Was Rwanda necessary? Was Vietnam and the deaths of over 58,000 American troops and an untold amount of Vietnamese necessary? I know a Vietnam War vet who witnessed something that to this day nearly kills him to remember it yet he has to. He was witness to a fellow Marine killing a little girl point blank just because she wanted to get away from the village the Marines had decimated. Was this little girl's death necessary? I am bumping this thread back up due to the 4th anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq in a week. A war that, IMO IS NOT NECESSARY!!! ![]() Peace Train by Cat Stevens Now I've been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come And I believe it could be, something good has begun Oh I've been smiling lately, dreaming about the world as one And I believe it could be, some day it's going to come Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again Now I've been smiling lately, thinking about the good things to come And I believe it could be, something good has begun Oh peace train sounding louder Glide on the peace train Come on now peace train Yes, peace train holy roller Everyone jump upon the peace train Come on now peace train Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too Cause it's getting nearer, it soon will be with you living, it's not so far from you And it's getting nearer, soon it will all be true Now I've been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is Why must we go on hating, why can't we live in bliss Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again Give Peace A Chance By Lennon/McCartney Two, one two three four Ev'rybody's talking about Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism, Ragism, Tagism This-ism, that-ism, ism, ism, ism. Here's another one that I dearly love, it's an oldie, but still stands up today... Edwin Starr - WAR War...huh...yeah What is it good for? Absolutely nothing Uh ha haa ha War...huh...yeah What is it good for? Absolutley nothing...say it again y'all War..huh...look out... What is it good for? Absolutely nothing...listen to me ohhhhh WAR! I despise, 'cos it means destruction of innocent lives, War means tears to thousands of mother's eyes, When their sons gone to fight and lose their lives. I said WAR!...huh...good God y'all, What is it good for? Absolutely nothing...say it again War! Huh...What is it good for (Edwin sings 'Wohh oh Lord' over the top) Absolutely nothing...listen to me WAR! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker, War. Friend only to the undertaker. Ohhh! War is an enemy to all mankind, The thought of war blows my mind. War has caused unrest within the younger generation Induction then destruction...who wants to die? Ohhh WAR! good God y'all huh What is it good for? Absolutely nothing...say it say it SAY IT! WAR!...uh huh yeah hu! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing...listen to me WAR! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker, War! It's got one friend that's the undertaker. Ohhhh! War has shattered many a young man's dream, Made him disabled, bitter and mean, Life is much too short and precious to spend fighting wars these days. War can't give life, it can only take it away! Ohhh WAR! huh...good God y'all What is it good for? Absolutely nothing...say it again War!...huh...woh oh oh Lord What is it good for? Absolutely nothing...listen to me War! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker, War. Friend only to the undertaker...woo Peace lovin' understand then tell me, Is there no place for them today? They say we must fight to keep our freedom, But Lord knows there's got to be a better way. Ohhhhhhh WAR! huh...good God y'all... What is it good for?...you tell me! Say it say it say it saaaay it! War! good God now...huh What is it good for? Stand up and shout it...NOTHING [END] Merry
