Crowded House founders Neil Finn and Nick Seymour have confirmed that they will be putting the band back together, with plans for a new studio album and world tour.

Talking about the decision Neil said "After spending most of last year making music and hanging out with my friend Nick Seymour we are now announcing our intention to reform Crowded House with a new record entitled Time On Earth. It feels right to us that the band should re-emerge at this time and together with Mark Hart we look forward to reconnecting with the audience that we established and for whom we still hold a deep respect. We aim to make the upcoming shows and the new music every bit as vital and spirited as what has come before. We are conscious that Paul Hester was above all a great drummer and we are currently auditioning to find someone special to take that role."

The band is currently putting the finishing touches on the new album for release later in the year. Tour plans are yet to be announced but the band have confirmed they will play the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in California, USA along with Bjork, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Rage Against the Machine.

frenz.com is also pleased to announce that we will be launching our brand new Crowded House site on Friday, January 26th at http://www.frenz.com/crowdedhouse/ where we will post all further Crowded House related news.

I wish they wouldn't! :(

Although it's one of my biggest musical regrets that I never saw Crowded House live, the Crowdies without Paul Hester would be like the Beatles without Ringo. He may not have run the show but he was the life of the party.

This utterly stuns me. In 20 years I never met anyone who disliked Crowded House and now I see three in a week?

I wanted to like them! Truly I did, but I couldn't stand them. And unlike with REM and U2, I never eventually came 'round to them, either. Sorry, Bill. Them, Tears For Fears, and Midnight Oil were three unbelievably popular bands that I found absolutely dreadful. And still do. :(

yes i bought the greatest hits package thinking that i would find some more songs to like but just complete and utter dross. Tears for Fears well that wasn;'t such a surprise with being round at the time but there was three on the greatest hits . REM i like from when i first heard them which as pretty late on. Basdically for years i didn't want to know about any new bands or music as i was too busy trying to replace my lp's. U2 nope never liked and Midnight Oil is totally over me head, sssssssh who are they.

For anyone who doesn't realise, my signature is from a Crowded House song, Distant Sun. ;)

Crowded House were one of the greatest bands of the late 80s and 90s - how anyone who likes The Beatles can describe Crowded House as dross is beyond my comprehension. Neil Finn is a wonderful lyricist & melodicist who I'd quite easily rate alongside Paul Simon in terms of songwriting ability. Woodface and Together Alone are incredible albums and their greatest hits, Recurring Dream, is one of the best 'best of's around. As much as I like them, I'd have say that they were in a different league to Tears For Fears... TFF could only dream of being as prolific as Crowded House.

As for them reforming - it won't be the same without Paul Hester, but if that's what they want to do and they can record & tour a good album then I'm not going to complain. I'm still waiting to see them in concert too and, while it won't be the original Crowded House, I'm sure it won't make much of a difference to the delivery of the songs.

I found this is the 'recommend an album' thread:

Together Alone - Crowded House

This album is so good.

I listened to Together Alone this morning and was reminded just how wonderful a listen it is. I'm never sure whether I favour this album or Woodface - they're both such works of brilliance in their own unique, yet also similar way. This is definitely the more 'mature' big brother to Woodface, commanding several plays before you are able to appreciate all of the many textures and subtlties of the beautiful melodies held within many of the less obvious tracks (Fingers Of Love, Private Universe, In Your Command). Of course, being Crowded House, there are the tracks which hit you square in the face with brilliance, such as Pineapple Head, Locked Out and Distant Sun, which must be one of my favourite songs of all times, containing one of my most favourite lyrics (I don't pretend to know what you want/But I offer love).

I wouldn't that recommend you start with this album - Woodface is a much better introduction to Crowded House, but Together Alone is a richer, deeper listen and it compliments Woodface beautifully.

Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped.
Hey, if there's going to be a fight, I'll bring the popcorn! And count me in on the CH side. My favourite album is Temple Of Low Men. I first heard it driving across the western U.S. desert en route to California. It wasn't my album--it belonged to the girl who was doing the driving. We listened to it over and over. I thought then, as I do now, that the song "Into Temptation" is what Paul McCartney should have sounded like in the late 80s. "Kill Eye" has a nice Lennon feel to it.

I agree with Andy's statement that they are very Beatlesque. However, I also see why Chad might not like them as well--they do lack the bite that The Beatles had. Still, I say you can't go wrong with this album. Check it out, Chad. Give them another chance.

PS Sad that Paul Hester isn't around to play with them. He was a fabulous drummer.

edited to reduce the size of the photo

I took my brains out and stretched 'em on a rack
Now I'm not so sure I'm ever gonna get 'em back

OMG i'm so happy. Weather With You reminds me of some brilliant, memorable times when we all used to go on holiday as a big, happy family when I was about 7 onwards

I love the Woodface album

I'm glad that some people still have ears!

Sorry, I'm not dissing anyone's taste, I just find this really hard to process. With pretty much every artist I like, including solo Beatles, I can understand the case for not liking them. But Crowded House dislikable? I wouldn't have though it possible. I could understand people thinking them unremarkable, inessential or dispensible, but not likable? How could anyone who bothered to collect all the Wings albums not like the Crowdies? Takes all sorts....

Andy, it will depend on the song whether Hessie is really missed. If they have any sense, they won't do Sister Madly again. That was always a live highlight and always had Paul to the fore. Neil would often use that song to make up words on the spot. He's the best improvisng lyricist I've ever heard.

Every Crowded House was fantastic, it's just a shame there's so few, 4 studio, 2 compilations and 1 live.
