I'm with you here, Andy!

I won't endorse either show, but for pure kitsch you just can't beat Shatner and Star Trek. The original "camp" TV show, for sure!

Shatner proved he couldn't act in the original Star Trek....and he continues to prove it to this day. He's one of those no talent nostalgic actors (term used loosely..very loosely!) who just hangs on.

I will admit that I thought Patrick Stewart was brilliant. When isn't he? And I loved Michael Dorn as Worf. I really didn't care for any of the rest of the shows (and I have been subjected to them all, thanks to my husband).

I think Babylon 5 comes across as being more believable, a faster moving show, and much more humanistic than Star Trek ever thought of being! All of the actors on Bab 5 are just incredible and so well fitted to their parts. There wasn't a bad one among them!

First off, I won't vote for either show.

But Patrick Stewart is without a doubt the best actor to ever appear in anything ST related. Period.

Bill Shatner would have to be wearing his super strengh girdle to be able to get close enough to kiss me in the first place! What a has-been! (Or never-was :D ) the Original Star Trek was horrid. I'm surprised that Leonard Nimoy can even get work after that piece of tripe... :D

Bab 5 was more believable in terms of scripts. Granted there was some lame stuff in it...but on the whole it out acted and out wrote ST by miles.

No it didnt. Trek was all about love...look at Kirk & Spock they shared bath's together. Nimoy and Shatner are best buddies in real life too. and i hope when i go bald i get to wear Shatner's toupee from his TJ Hooker days. all the girls will love me then. even you Jana, admit it, you watch the TJ Hooker re-runs just like me.

you'll come around. if we meet i'll bring over my 3 seasons of Star Trek and me and your husband will sit down either side of you, you of course will be tied up so you wont be able to run and we will be dressed up like Kirk & Spock (after countless hours of arguing who gets to be who)

then you will come around :)

Bab 5 does have quite a following. I agree with you about Stargate.

I don't consider myself to be 'into science fiction'. I tolerate it because of Jim. But I was VERY fond of Bab 5. Actually, the only ST I would ever watch was Next Generation. It had better story lines and better actors.

an example of extremism, i personally laughed my arse off at 'Trekkies' the documentary made in 1998 about the fans of Star Trek and i am about to see Trekkies 2. i admit some of the fans do go overboard with it, like Barbara Adams who thought she was a Starfleet Commander. she made the news in the States by wearing her Starfleet Uniform to Jury Duty on the Whitewater affair back in 1996. she was taken off the service though because she spoke to the media who found her uniform Fascinating.

Well Star Trek obviously and that's even including the drag factor of some Voyager and Enterprise episodes. Who could vote for something which is just a rip off of the best Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine. Yeah, I know Babylon 5 was thought of before DS9 but it's still a rip off, so there!!!!!

Deep Space Nine was excellent quality Television, the Dominion War arc was a perfect end to the series. they should have made another series carrying on from where DS9 left off.

I agree, Deep Space Nine The Next Generation instead of Enterprise.

Enterprise really disappointed me because they re-wrote a lot of Trek history. they really screwed up the Franchise. DS9 left us with the Cardassians homeworld destroyed and Garak finally coming home after years in Exile to the destroyed planet, the Dominion were great characters. and the whole theme of Bajor being reborn while the Cardassians get destroyed provided the viewer with a sense of Irony considering the Cardassians occupied Bajor for about 50 years and ow here are the Cardassians who were sold to the Dominion by Gul Dukat (excellently played by Marc Alaimo) believing they would become great again and they ended up being Occupied by the Dominion instead of being Allies and i nthe end the Dominion destroyed most of their homeworld and Damar (again excellently acted by Casey Biggs) became the Che Guevara of of Cardassia, leading the resistance.

Jana if you wanna see how good Star Trek is, Watch Deep Space Nine.

Dom is so VERY right, there is no doubt that Star Trek is and always will be the very best. After all it came first, is the model for every bit of televised science fiction (and tons of movie SF) that came after it. And how can anyone possibly improve upon the magnificent Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard or the impeccable Brent Spiner as Data? Hmm?

Believe me I know of which I speak. ;)

Babylon 5 had a lot going for it, no doubt. But as a whole, the series suffered greatly from the first lead, Michael O'Hare, who played Jeffrey Sinclair going crackers, then having to be replaced by Commander Cardboard, aka John Sheridan played by Bruce Boxleitner, who would smile senselessly and have reams of boring speeches; and from having been originally planned as a five-year show, was threatened with cancellation so then the original story ended in the fourth season, leaving the fifth season as absolute dreck. But I will agree that most of the actors were fantastic, particularly Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar and the astonishing Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari.

And Jason Carter (Marcus Cole) is a total babe.

But if anyone wants to see excellent current TV SF, Battlestar Galactica is it.

I gotta say the original Star Trek is a classic, filled with hope, compassion, and equality . It was a message badly needed in its timeperiod. Sure the series doesn't hold up as well as the newer ones. Maybe if they had a budget it would have.

Deep Space Nine was the dark side of the original and I must admit I liked it better when Worf joined the cast. Its darker take on the human species made it interesting to watch and left you guessing on where it was going.

Babylon 5, no offense it is a bad as Lost in Space in my book. Not the movie the crap 60's show. I can hear the robot screaming "danger danger" as I state I would much rather watch Space 1999 then either of these shows. Maya was hot and the episode with the monster that sucked you in then spit your burnt corpse back out still freaks me out.

Oh and just one more thing, Shatner is great as Denny Crane in Boston Legal. Two emmys for that show as best supporting actor says alot. And he actually won two other emmys, one best supporting actor on The Practice playing Denny Crane and the other best gues appearance on Third Rock From The Sun for playing The Big Giant Head. Shatner is.......the man.

I don't think it's a fair comparison. Which Star Trek are we talking about?

The most analogous to Babylon 5 is Deep Space 9. DS9 started out really boring and I think B5 forced it to lift its game.
But if we're talking about other Star Trek series, there's really no comparison.
I was just add that Enterprise blows - and that's coming from a Star Trek fan!

i think it's Star Trek on the whole Jana doesnt like. she's comparing Babylon 5 to a whole 4 series (TOS, TNG, DS9 & VOY. No Enterprise cause as Bill said it blew and it blew then even sucked a little bit!) but i have to agree DS9 is the one that is closer to Babylon 5.

and it seems that the poll is fixed....as soon as Trek get another vote someone comes and matches it by voting for Both Equally Bad.

but i think its fair to say Star Trek is winning.

so Jana's husband will be pleased.

I always found Deep Space Nine to be the supirior Trek from the very beginning.

I knew there was a reason I liked you. :P

And agreed, Bill, Enterprise does bite the big one. I don't count it as Star Trek actually.

Isn't that cheating? REnterprise is now as much part of Trek as Worf, Scotty or 3D chess.

If discounting Enterprise is wrong, I don't wanna be right. :P

OK, "They're both equally bad" won. I'm sure that pleased both Dom and Jana. :giggle:
