That's very gentlemanly of you Chad, but if you've got money to spare like that, give it to someone who needs it. The US is in my travel plans one day. B)

At the very least get a layover at O'hare in Chicago. I'd spend those ridiculous cocktail fees for a cold one there between flights. (Even the ridiculous parking fee.)

Mate, I would love to share a beer with you and Chad - and whoever else would like to come along. But it's in the middle distant future for now.

Then please forgive me if I misunderstood what you were trying to say.  By bringing that up in this thread to me seemed as if you were implying that discussing this had either already led to trouble or would lead to trouble.  I seriously doubt that this is going to be the case.  And even if something of that nature should occur here why taint the waters with such a suggestion before the fact.  When you make post like that is when things tend to get inflamed and negativity enters into the picture.  Please don`t pre judge the membership of this board based on bad behavior exhibited in other discussion groups you have been a part of in the past.  It is not fair to us.

Betsy it's been done, believe me a thousand times before at that 'other' place.

This is why I no longer plan get togethers anymore. People are always jealous and start in with that clique bullsh*t.

They can't afford it, they feel awkward, blah blah blah...it's been a lot easier for me now when people say hey, everyone's meeting over here. I pack my bags and I go.

Everyone is welcomed no matter where it is held. Either lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. I've never been somewhere where people are rude, or they made you feel like they were better than you. They are always as wonderful as they appear on the message boards....well with the exception of two of the biggest AHoles i've ever met. ;)

Beat! not everyone can afford it like you. but, I am not down about it. I am only saying, it if I have the money and the way. What is so wrong with that. In fact I love when you guys talk about meeting up. I love hear the story about it. Yes, I love meet all of you.but,If I can't oh well, It is not the end of my life. If there a clique here then it me being cheeky.. ;) :P :D

Dotty, what does me being able to afford it have to do with it?

Most of the times people come to NYC and all I have to do is drive 30 mins.

You just showed everyone why I don't plan anymore get togethers, becaue it's easier for someone else to do it and invite me, and if I can make it I make it, if not I don't.

But this is the exact bullsh*t that I wanted to get away from.

If I go to Buffalo and leave from JFK airport it costs me $69 each way and then I stay at a friend's house.

And not to be mean, but Geez if you can't swing $69 then people shouldn't be so damn worried about meeting up, as i'm sure they must have other more important priorities than meeting members of a message board.

What I was trying to say beat was maybe, you can afford. but, not everyone can. I am happy that everyone can do it. And I love to hear story's about it.

For some people, $69 is a lot of money.  .

Exactly. And if that's the case they then they shouldn't be worried about meeting people from message boards.

But on the other hand is it necessary to hear the tales of woe so that others that can meetup feel guilty about it?

Please, like I said, that's why I don't organize these things anymore. I mean if you can't afford the airfare that's one thing, but i've had it where people actually want you to get them there for free. And if you think i'm pulling your leg just ask Judy and Betsy if I am.

It never ends.

Why, feel guilty about meeting up.. It sure doesn't brother me. and I didn't say I couldn't try to make it. I was saying, that not all us can afford it. And If I couldn't make it I love to hear story's about it. Gees, what is wrong with that.

For some people, $69 is a lot of money.  I think what Dotty is getting at, as much as she would love to meet everyone she has her priorities set.  If she can't afford to go, she doesn't and her life will not come to a crashing end.  For those of us that can't afford things that we consider luxury, some of us don't mind hearing the stories.  It's almost as good a being there.  I do make enough money to at least get out to Vegas, if we have a meet-up there but don't make enough money to make it to NYC.  Okay, so others can afford it, no big deal.  As much as I would miss not being there, I know it is out of my price range.  So what! Life won't come to an end.

Well, Said Cathy.. You said, It better then me. I can maybe, make it to Vegas. but, other places no. why, I can't afford it .and I am afraid of planes.

Well considering I'm a broke college kid there's no way in hell...

Hey thought I might throw out a suggestion for those of the board members that might be enrolled in or faculty members of community college's or University's. I found this site that caters to students and faculty members, not only do they offer rates for transportation (i.e. Europasses in Europe can be purchase rather reasonably, plane fares, information on hospices in a number of countries, American rail passes, hotels, travel package deals too).

Check it out if you're interested in traveling on your student or faculty status (all you need to do is have a school sponsored email account to prove your eligible):

http://www.studentuniverse.com/

... by the way, regarding Vegas ... try using priceline.com ... did that a couple years ago (before I found the other site) and was able to lock in a really good deal for the MGM Grand at the time. Alternatively you could always choose to stay 'round Fremont Street rather than the strip, as I understand it's an interesting place to visit ... although honestly every time I've gone I "planned on going there" but got caught up in other stuff, like walking way too far. It's amazing how close you might think things are until you start trudging along and figure out that it's a major trek.

I make enough money to go to Vegas or Beatlefest in Chicago, but no way can I afford a hotel and air fare to NYC, much as I want to go there. That is a dream of mine--to get back to NYC. I'd probably want to combine it with a Paul concert. ;)

I'd love more than anything to be able to travel to a meet up this year, but I think I'm going to wind up taking care of some personal issues, and won't be able to afford it.

I'm going to have to face up to some dental and medical things, just for starters, and those are top priority, right now.

Hey, I'm heading to Charleston, SC in the summer to see my mom. If there's any southerners that want to run into me there or Savhanna, let me know.

Any Michagian boardies, PM me and we can set up a play date for downtown!

John, I might head out to Chicago this summer too, up for a meet up with a Tigers fan? Chad, steal away and come up too!

I'm doing it this way so that I get everyone on the southeast seaboard and those in the Midwest. Those in the tri-state areas (NY/NJ/CT) I'll get you when I get invtes from family members out there!

Yes, I remember. Losing money at craps is apparently not tax deductible.

actually.. you can claim your losses on your taxes :)

One of the reasons to sign up for those stupid "casino cards" at the end of they year you can go print out a win/loss report and if your losses are bigger then your wins, there is something you fill out. Nothing I ever have done, but was told about by my tax guy. LOL!

Now.. a meet up in China.. that would be amazing!! :)

Boy, did I miss a lot on THIS thread the past few pages!!

It's not a matter of $ for me. More a matter of obligations that I can't just turn loose of. You all have my blessing (which I am sure is what you were waiting on :P ) to have a meet up. Only one requirement. TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS!

Can I suggest that perhaps the best way to do this is to discuss setting a timeframe of when it will happen. THEN discuss where. That might begin to make things come together a little better.

I would be game to have a 'meet up'. I voted Las Vegas, mostly because I want to go there and see "LOVE", but the added attraction of meeting some boardies would be kinda cool. I'm not sure why there seems to be friction associated with this...but then again...there seems to be friction associated with ANY topic.

I also don't believe there is a lot of friction on the board. We have a lot of heated discussions, but I don't call that friction. It would be pretty boring if everyone agreed with everyone else.

Well ... if I had an opinion on the matter I'd suggest the Vegas deal too, just 'cause it's closer to where I'm at and I suppose more realistic from my perspective at the moment. I've got a friend that's got some tickets to anywhere in the US that she's been trying to talk me into using with her for a trip to Vegas.

The NYC meet-up sounds like a good idea too though ... one of these days, I'd like to head out that way and then do some touristy things up in the DC area to make it complete. Heard that the NE in the fall is glorious with the changing of the leaves ... I'd like a nice visual splash of color personally.

For those of you that keep tackling the members that are voicing things about their inability to travel or coordinate ... those abrupt tackles are really more distracting than what any of 'em are saying (IMO). I mean, maybe that only happens when the thread slows down ... when it's growing really quickly it doesn't seem to matter that one post amongst ten says something about being in a financial crunch. I don't think it's necessary to put a spotlight on someone just because they don't know how to word their misgivings without inadvertently hitting a raw nerve with someone that isn't in a financial crunch, or is just being temperamental out of the blue. Hey maybe I'm wrong about all of that, maybe it's just folks trying to Shepard the direction of the thread away from being a rant and rave about being financially strapped or something ... I don't know, it just crossed my mind and I decided to "share it" with you all (now don't tackle me    ).

OK, i'll have to tackle you.

It doesn't matter if the finger points towards me, i'm usually guilty as charged.

But let me explain myself because it's valid. The SOS always happened on that 'other' site. Most times when people met up we'd write about it, have a blast telling the story and about 95% always wanted to hear all who showed up and their takes on it.

Believe me it was a lot of fun. Then it all stopped and most of those people don't even post anymore. Why? Because it was the 5% who had to throw the wet blanket on the party and they would start in with the comments "Oh they don't want anyone with them cause they're all in a Clique" or I wish I could afford to go but I can't and of course they always had to add the crying/bawling face smiley.

So when I see anything that resembles that here, I freakout and just say Thank God I don't organize that stuff anymore, and believe me, we still all get together but no one knows because we don't post about it anymore. Why? Because it was more trouble than it was worth.

The last time I posted about a get together was the Loose Moose Toronto Show.

So please forgive me if I make these sudden outbursts. I would love to meet up with many of you who i've posted with alot over the years, or who i've spoken to on the phone many times but never met in person, and as much fun as it would be partying with you cornballs, and believe you me, it would be a riot, I don't dare post about it.

Well that would have to be one of the best "tackles" I've ever been privy too ^_^ . All warm and fuzzy 'round the periphery ... 'nother group hug perhaps BEATNUT?? :boogie:

Although I'm kinda busy dancing with that little dude up there. B)

Tassy, someone did mention Boaz as a possible meet-up site, a few pages back. Whaddya think? ;)

Well, I dug around and found that post. Unfortunately, we have no campground in Boaz :hmm:

i could possibly do Chicago, because all I would do is pay for a bus (airfare would be too expensive) and I have a couple good friends that live there that I could see if I could stay with to save the cost on hotels. I am dying to go to Second City Chicago. :D

I'd love more than anything to be able to travel to a meet up this year, but I think I'm going to wind up taking care of some personal issues, and won't be able to afford it.

I'm going to have to face up to some dental and medical things, just for starters, and those are top priority, right now.

:) Merry

Merry, tell me about it. The bills are starting to roll in on my broken wrist and just had 2 teeth pulled with 2 more due to be pulled in 2 weeks. My dental bills will amount to around $5000 and that is with insurance. No telling what the bills will be for my wrist.

I understand completely, Cathy...I'm in the same boat.

I have no dental or medical insurance and I don't know what I'm going to do. My teeth definitely need attention, I can't put it off anymore and I don't know what else is haywire, but I'm a little worried.

So as much as I'd love to attend a meet-up, I've got to take care of myself this year first.

You are more important. Meetups can always take place but your health needs to be dealt with first.

I kept on pushing away my dental problems all of my life. Seemed everytime I went to a dentist all I heard, over the drill, was Ca-ching!! I always had them deal with the immediate problems but rarely on the not-so-immediate, which later on became the immediate problems. My bad thing is I grind my teeth so now I use a mouthguard that athletes use. I hate it but it does help a lot!!

Can I suggest that perhaps the best way to do this is to discuss setting a timeframe of when it will happen.  THEN discuss where.  That might begin to make things come together a little better.

Is this Friday good for everybody?

I keep forgetting to mention this (so much for advanced notice). Father Dan and I will be hooking up (so to speak) in Hong Kong on or about March 3. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us.

This will be during the Lantern Festival, so we will be getting sh*t faced and joining multiple paper lamp orgies. Well, one of us will be at least.

In case anyone thought she was joking - it's hard to tell sometimes - I will have the honor of meeting Lissa next week. We should've said something sooner and I apologize for that, but I wouldn't really expect many people to show up anyway. I think most of the members here are in Europe and America.

If you can make it to Hong Kong, by all means join us. Everyone is more than welcome.

I'm genuinely looking forward to this. I've never met someone from the Internet in person and how can meeting Lissabe anything but exciting?

I don't want to bore everyone with too many details, but meeting Lissa was incredibly exciting. It was my first ever Internet meet up and it couldn't have gone better.

We had dinner at a vegetarian restaurant and she converted me - I'm not even sure how she did it. I think I was subtly ambushed. So now I'm meat-free for 11 days and counting. It's actually not as hard as I thought, but it might be too soon to say.

The next night I saw her in concert. All I can say is wow. Better than any roller coaster I've ever been on and I love roller coasters.

Then she went off to explore the Chinese interior and have a life-changing experience - but I'll let her tell you about that - and I went home. It all ended so quickly, but it was a great experience.

I wouldn't worry about us running off together. She can do much better.

It was great for me because I'm never here that much and I really don't get the chance to get to know any of you that well and Lissa was as friendly as can be. She just had a way of naturally making me feel at home - and she was the one visiting me. This was on my turf but she was the one who made me feel welcome.

I'm sure her visit was great for her, but not so much because of me, more because of after we parted ways.

She's very talented and intelligent and I assume very pretty.

You know what they say about assumptions.

They are usually spot on.

Due to overwhelming curiosity (two people sent me messages), I will explain that to which Father Dan alluded.

After leaving him with memories he will cherish forever, I went to a school run by one of his colleagues in Hunan. My plan was to spend the night there and go to Beijing the next day. I have wanted to go to Beijing for years. It is the reason I accepted the engagement in Hong Kong in the first place, which is the reason Dave and I met. And, ironically, meeting Dave is the reason I went to Hunan, which led to my not going to Beijing.

It occurs to me that this could become a very long story. The important part is that I am now in the process of adopting a girl I met at Dave's colleague's school. I assume that is what he meant by all that life changing experience talk. What could be more life changing than having a child.

So possibly by the end of this year or later (or earlier) I will have a daughter. This blows me away more than it does anyone else, believe me. The good news is that I do not have to deal with stretch marks or a bowling ball tearing out of my cooter. The bad news? No engorged breasts.

Seriously??? How cool is that? I applaud you Lissa and I will say that having a child, no matter how, truly is a life changing experience. You become less selfish and more able to let the petty things slide.

As for the stretch marks, I see them as trophies for surviving the bowling ball coming out of my cooter!

My question to you and all single mothers (I assume that you are a single mother. I have no idea why, though) is, how accurate are all the jokes about not getting laid when you have a child? This concerns me.

More importantly, do you guys say "cooter" in Australia?

OK:

One: Yes I am indeed a single mother, but I would like to know exactly why you assumed that.

Two: My daughter is three and a half and I have not had any kind of sex since she was conceived in October 2002. However, this is because her father was a dropkick. Sorry to disappoint you.

Three: Cooter - funnily enough, we call it a Mozart. If you part the Bizet of the Mozart, you expose the Beethoven. Once the Beethoven is aroused, you're ready for a damn good Straussing.

The other word is vagina. Whatever floats your boat.

As for all this California talk, that is in North America. Maybe you guys should start a thread specifically for North America.

Also, I will be in Los Angeles from September 23 to 27, 2006. Anyone who wants to get together then should have said something earlier.
