Ben Ownby, Shawn Hornbeck Both Found Alive!

KSDK - Days after an Amber Alert was issued for 13-year-old William "Ben" Ownby, he has been found alive-and years after one was issued for Shawn Hornbeck, he, too, has been found alive. Advertisement

They were found in an apartment in Kirkwood.

At a news conference, police said they had charged 41-year-old Michael J. Devlin of Kirkwood with one count of kidnapping. In 1997, he was charged with indecent exposure in Ogden, Utah, and had apparently gone under the name Michael Tate.

2 Kirkwood police officers were serving a warrant in the area of the apartment when they saw a truck that matched the description of one seen leaving the area where Ownby was last seen.

The search began Monday afternoon, when Ben disappeared shortly after getting off a school bus near Beaufort, Missouri, in Franklin County. Another teen who was with him saw a white truck with a camper shell speeding away from the area. Police had been searching for the truck, and were following up on more than 500 leads.

Ownby's parents made an impassioned plea for his safe return Thursday evening. They created flyers to post around the area, hoping for his return, but knowing that each passing hour decreased the odds that he'd be found safely.

In 2002, Shawn Hornbeck left his Richwoods, Missouri home around 1:15 on a sunny, Sunday afternoon on his bike to visit a friend. No one had seen him since, until Friday. When he was brought to the area, NewsChannel 5's Cordell Whitlock, on the scene, said someone yelled out that it was indeed Shawn, and the crowd broke out into applause.

Shawn and Ben both were taken to the Franklin County Sheriff's Department Friday.

A short time laters, Shawn Honbeck was reunited with his parents.

The F.B.I. joined the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Franklin County Sheriff's Department in the investigation, and they were joined in the search by fire departments, National Guard troops, and volunteers

Mitch Holt was the last person who'd seen Ben Ownby before his disappearance. His mother told NewsChannel 5's Cordell Whitlock that they hadn't yet seen either boy, and they were elated that the boys were found.

Mitch told NewsChannel 5, "It feels really good, that not just one life was saved, but two." He also said it was the first time he'd ever seen the truck." Later, he added, "I'm going to keep a closer eye on Ben."

Amazingly, it's the second time in recent months an Amber Alert in Franklin County has ended with the successful return of a child. Abby Woods, just a few days old, had been abducted from her home. She was found with another woman, who was subsequently charged with kidnapping her. Abby Woods was unharmed.

By Christopher Leonard, Associated Press
BEAUFORT, Mo. — A 13-year-old boy missing since the beginning of the week was found alive in a suburban St. Louis home, along with a 15-year-old boy missing since 2002, authorities said Friday.
Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck were found in a Kirkwood home belonging to Michael Devlin, Sheriff Gary Toelke said. Devlin, 41, has been charged with one count of first-degree kidnapping and is being held on $1 million bond.

Ben was last seen Monday, when he stepped off his school bus. The straight-A student and Boy Scout was last seen running the few hundred feet down a gravel road to his home.

Police said a tip about a white truck led them to the Devlin's home.

Toelke said authorities were surprised to find Shawn, who identified himself when found at the home.

Toelke said authorities were still investigating the motive behind the abductions.

"There are a lot of things we don't know right now," Toelke said.

Shawn disappeared from his home in rural Washington County in October 2002, when he was 11. He went for a bike ride and never returned.

The sheriff said both boys appeared unharmed. Ben has been reunited with his family, and Shawn's parents were coming to meet their son in Union, the Franklin County seat, Toelke said.

Franklin County Prosecutor Robert Parks said more charges are likely to be filed.

I heard one neighbor thought that Shawn was the creep's son. I don't understand child molesters or what makes them tick. They don't seem to be able to be rehabilitated, so they need to be locked up forever.

I am against the death penalty even for low life scum like this. However we do need to protect others from the likes of this. So I propose cutting off all their limbs and tattoo child molester on their face. That way we all know what kind of person they are and they can't hurt anyone ever again.

More often than not, these situations do no have a happy ending. I can't imagine what the families were going through. I know they are elated. It's nice to see a positive ending for a change

Oh, someone probably will <_<

I'm just happy they've been found and the guy caught. Now I hope the boys get some good counseling and aren't too messed up mentally. What a nightmare for them.

That guy should be castrated, iMHO. In prison he'll get whipped because child abusers aren't looked upon too kindly in prisons. Someone will beat him up or even kill him unless they put him in solitary.

From cnn.com. And, yes, these boys are going to both need some serious therapy.

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) -- Two very relieved and beaming families hugged their sons at news conferences Saturday, the day after the two missing boys were found -- one after four days, the other after four years.

Police had been searching for Ben Ownby, 13, who disappeared Monday, when they found him with another teenager in a man's apartment in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. That boy told the officers that he was Shawn Hornbeck, who was last seen riding his bike in 2002, when he was 11.

The apartment owner, Michael J. Devlin, 41, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of first-degree kidnapping, according to Franklin County Prosecutor Robert Parks. (Watch as Devlin is detained by police Video)

He is being held on $1 million bail and may also face federal charges. (Full story)

The rescued boys' families told their stories at separate news conferences, each filled with emotion and overwhelming relief.

Shawn's mother, Pam Akers, and his stepfather, Craig Akers, said they had never given up hope. (Watch a tearful Craig Akers describe the phone call he says he will remember for ever Video)

"We've got a lot of catching up to do," said a tearful Pam Akers. "He's grown up on me, that's for sure."

"Shawn is a miracle here," she said.

"This is one of those rare, rare things. To have one missing child found is just extraordinary," Craig Akers told reporters. "To have two found at the same time is one of those things -- you don't even read about things like that."

Shawn sat at a table close to his mother, exchanging hugs with her and smiling as he watched his stepfather talk excitedly to reporters. At one point, he put his forehead on the table in mock embarassment as Craig Akers relayed, to much laughter, that Shawn's first request was a hamburger from McDonald's.

At his news conference, Ben appeared at ease and happy as he stood with his sister and his parents, Don and Doris Ownby.

Doris Ownby said she was "just, just ecstatic" to have Ben back. "I didn't say anything, I just grabbed him and held him." (Watch Ben's sister Amanda welcome him back Video)

She said the first thing Ben wanted to do was to play a computer game, and the first thing she did that morning was check to see if Ben was still there.
Family wants to spread hope

The Akers, who have spent the past four years helping in other missing children cases, said they wanted to give hope to those parents. Craig Akers said he remembered the day he heard Utah teenager Elizabeth Smart was found -- on March 12, 2003, nearly a year after being kidnapped. (Watch how you can help look for children who are still missing Video)

"I remember how much that raised our hopes, how much fuel that gave us to keep going," he said.

The conference was held in a room decorated with balloons and handmade posters that read "Miracles Do Happen" and "We All Missed You, Shawn."

"I want to give that hope to the families, to the family that their kids can come home," Pam Akers said. "It may be years later, may be days later, may be weeks later, but they can come home safe and just always keep that faith and hope." (Watch the boys shortly after being rescued Video)

The boys were found in Kirkwood, Missouri, about an hour away from the Akers' home in Richwoods. (Full story)

The break came after reports of a sighting of a rusty white Nissan pickup truck that matched the description of one sought in the disappearance of Ben, last seen getting off his school bus in Franklin County, near St. Louis.

Two police officers in suburban Kirkwood went to the apartment complex to serve an unrelated warrant and spotted the pickup, Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke told reporters Friday. (Watch how police found the boys Video)

"That resulted in the recovery," Toelke said.

It is not clear what happened to the boys while they were with Devlin, but Craig Akers said Shawn did not go to school during the four years he's been missing.

"All the questions will come later," said Pam Akers. "We're just trying to absorb that he's home."
'That's my son'

Craig Akers described driving home from work and getting the call that Shawn might have been found. "It took a minute to find a suitable place to pull over," he said.

"The words -- 'We think we found Shawn, we're 95 percent sure that we found Shawn and that he's alive' -- were the sweetest words I ever heard in my life," he said.

Driving to see their son was "the longest drive we ever had to do," he said.

When the parents and Shawn saw each other, there were no words, he said.

"Just a split second of shock," Akers recounted. "The last time we saw him, he was yea tall and 11 years old. It kind of throws you for a second. But ... once we saw the face, we said, "Oh, my God, that's my son...

"That was pretty much where we were the first five minutes. Not a lot of words spoken, except a lot of 'I love you's,' kisses, and 'We're so glad that you're home.' "

My sister said that Shawn asked for a haircut. I also read in the paper that the jerk who did this had no criminal record. People who lived in the apartment complex assumed that Shawn was the guy's son. They are just sick that they didn't turn him in, but if they didn't know, how could they turn him in.

All three major local news stations here reported that he HAD been arrested for molestation in Utah and Texas. The guy is a complete sicko but If I was him I'd sue the local news stations for reporting that lie!!!Later of course we found out all he had was a couple of traffic tickets.

They reported it here, too, and so did CNN. Apparently there is a Michael Devlin with an arrest record for molestation, but it is not this Michael Devlin. So, there will be two Michael Devlins on the sexual predator list. I'd probably sue for that misinformation, too. It's not going to help him if this goes to trial.

He is a sicko but thank god he didn't kill the boys. He deserves to be locked up in a mental institution for the rest of his life. I hope Shawn can lead a normal life after this.
