That'll teach me to rely on my memory & not verify my 'facts' before committing them to this site. ;)

Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies - and is therefore officially evil. :P

I get veggie Worcester sause from the health food shop.

i have seen someone put HP sauce on a roast beef sunday dinner, fortunately she is now in canada, mother refused to give her the HP sauce ever again. also a different person used to loved HP sauce butties. so obviously HP is as addictive as herion.

Hmm, beans on toast. I've had it before and it's not that bad, Tassy. It looks gross, but it does taste good.

I may just have to take your word for it. :P

More on HP sauce (also known as brown sauce, which previously puzzled me):

Brown sauce is a condiment popular in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. There exist a number of different brands and generic versions, of which HP Sauce is the most popular - sales of HP Brown Sauce and HP Fruity Sauce account for around 75% of value sales in the UK (source IRI, June 2006). In some regions of the UK, the Daddies Favourite brand is also popular. Both brands have existed since the start of the twentieth century. Chef Brown Sauce is the most popular version produced in Ireland.

All feature a malt vinegar base blended with fruit and spices, with tamarind and worcestershire sauce being indispensable ingredients.

Brown sauce is traditionally eaten with meals and dishes such as Full English breakfasts, bacon sandwiches, chips, and baked beans. Around Edinburgh a combination of spirit vinegar and brown sauce, known simply as "sauce" or "chippie sauce", is popular on fish and chips.

Okay.

I am going to the grocery store, getting a bottle of HP sauce, buying some English muffins (what we savage Americans call crumpets) and making a cheese and HP sauce melt, in a true investigative reporter fashion. I may report my findings at some point.

Jayne wants me to try beans on toast. That seems unlikely. :P

Not Holland and Barret it's the other health food shop that has a green front. I know there's one in Sutton and we've got one in Epsom too. It's called Life and Health All Vegetarian Worcester Sauce.

Yes - that is true. If you go into a chippy here and ask for chips or a fish supper. The standard question that always follows is Salt'n'Sauce?
This question is fired at you very rapidly so that it is almost one word. The server in the chippie has both the salt shaker and the bottle of sauce in their hand ready for it to be liberally shaken all over the the meal because almost everyone takes it with salt'n'sauce. Which is why I don't go too often I'm trying to be health conscious. (Ha ha)

Holland & Barrett is the European subsiduary of the company I work for.

I've found all this talk about food very interesting!

As for the tea, sorry to say I rarely have it, but when I do I just sweeten it with sugar or honey. I'm more of a coffee drinker, my favorite being Cafe Mocha..yummy!

Isn't Holland and Barrett owned by a butcher or something weird?

Good lord, if that ever got out...! ;)

We carry some items from Holland & Barrett, and I was told when I first started that the company was a part of Vitamin World, here in the US.

I'll try to get more info and get back with you on that, Mark!

I can't find anything online that ties the two companies together, so I'm going to have to ask my boss about that tomorrow.

I notice a similarity in what each chain sells, here's the website for Holland & Barrett...

http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/inf...127253C65620B46

and Vitamin World's....

http://www.vitaminworld.com/index.asp?afid...tm_nooverride=1

...but ours doesn't carry health food, only the dietary supplements.

You'd be surprised how many do come in for fancy teas though, that we don't carry...VW should take a tip from yours! ;)

So you are basically saying that the Brits eat a sandwhich that is made of bread , butter and potato chips. Which is basically a cholesterol bomb and yet you make fun of us in the Southern US for eating grits? :D :D

Actually it sounds like pretty good hangover food but I think for the sake of my arteries I will try to not indulge. lol

Okay.

I bought the HP sauce. For the record it cost about $3.50. I had some today, but prepare yourself Jayne, I had it on a veggie burger. (I will try it the proper way later I swear. :P)

It was quite good. Reminded me a bit of ketchup, with a type of A-1 sauce aftertaste and tanginess. Pretty mild but nice and I could see how it would go with everything. I think it would be excellent with baked beans.

I know that at least Andy will be pleased with me. :)

From what I can gather marmite seems to be a lot like vegemite. I will not classify either as evil but certainly an aquired taste and must be introduced in small diluted amounts to older palates that are not used to such a high assault on the taste buds. If marmite is indeed like vegemite then it is very very salty and funky, but it does grow on you once you learn how to use it sparingly.

P*ssed again...Pot calling the Jayne black now hmm Peter? :)

It was the large glass bottle that was three dollars and fifty. So in the funny money (:P) the difference of $2 and $3.50 isn't so bad considering the HP sauce was an import.

Speaking of tea, everyone here actually have tea still at 4 pm or so? Or is that old hat?

Glad you tried the HP sauce, Lisa!  ^_^

I bought some lovely Marmite myself yesterday - Fiona insists that it is evil.  I disagree.  ^_^

Andy, marminite is EVIL, I have to agree with Fiona. Once I ordered some from UK Goods to see what it tasted like and it tasted really bad. I also tried vegimite once and that's also pretty vile. How can you Brits/Aussies stand that stuff? :hmm: :D :P

It's definitely an acquired taste! The advertising slogan here is something like "You either love it or you hate it"! You really have to use is sparingly, though. I've heard of people spreading it onto bread like Nutella and wondering why they're gagging uncontrollably. :P You only use a very small amount on lightly buttered toast - and it's lovely. To my tastebuds, anyway. :D
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I had tea today with milk in it for the very first time. Not bad!

I have never been a fan of tea. I have spent most of my life trying not to drink it. The only times I have done so is to not offend my host. About 14 years ago I had new neighbors that moved in and they were from India. Their son was the same age as my youngest boy and the two of them became great friends. So one day Kalpana (btw that was the mom ) invited all of us over for a really great Indian meal. To end the evenings festivities she served us tea with loads of milk. I drank the entire damn cup to not be rude. I will have to say that even though it was not my personal cup of tea (shoot me now for this very bad pun) it was one of the better methods of serving a tea that I could drink without gagging in front of my host.
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand

I'm with you Bets, I loathe tea and I always have, which is a bit strange considering I come from good English tea-drinking stock.

I'm loving Vegemite however. :D

Worcestershire sauce is evil - but only because of the anchovies. Even if I wasn't veggie, I still wouldn't eat anchovies.

HP sauce on a couple of fried eggs is rather lovely though. :P

That, and the fact that anchovies are nasty, furry little f*ckers.

yes i once tried spreading it like nutella, it didnt make me gag but i winced in pain because i forgot i had an ulcer on my tongue.....but yeah lightly spread it, a smidgen on the knife on lightly hot buttered toast it blends with the butter to dilute it somewhat and make it less strong, then it's delicious. it isnt evil at all, it's only evil when you open the tops and discover there's only dregs left! i dunno about this marmite Squeezy though, i havent bought one yet, who has? is it really as easy as it says it is? or when you squeeze it does it come out in a rush and you find a huge dollop of it on your toast?

We don't do it for fun! Don't you get it? It's a test of our strength. Every morning we smear some stuff that looks like it should be used for making roads onto our toast to test if we are strong enough to face the world. That takes guts! You yanks think you're so big and strong and you can't even take marmite, let alone the strong stuff like vegemite. What a bunch of nancy wussbags! ;)

Awwww, no ritual pinching off of the heads first? Peeps must be eaten in an orderly fashion to get the full experience of all the subtle nuances. I bet you didn`t even bother to properly swirly them around you palate and suck in the right amount of oxygen to properly appreciate their heady bouquet. You philistine! I suppose you can be forgiven this transgression just once as I happen to know you are a Peep connoseur, you must have had a momentary lapse.

Sorry Barb, didn`t realize you didn`t know the proper place to start on the heart. First you hold the heart facing you, then you bite off the left upper part of the top of the heart, then you bite off the right upper part of the heart thus making the top even. Then you bite off the bottom point rendering a square and you are home free!!

Don`t you feel better now that you know? :hyper:
