I see on the news today that scientsets have discovered that, although tea contains chemicals that are good for your heart, adding milk can nulenvoid these benifits. |

I have it the Dutch way (Mum is from Holland); black, weak and one sugar. For years people told me that was bad for you and you need to put milk in it, now they say this. So I wonder what they will say in the future. |

I like fruit tea & Earl Grey tea without milk, but if we're talking English Tea, then it has to be with a drop of milk, otherwise you can keep it.

I started having milk in my tea whenever I could after the first time I went to England and was very comforted by a nice pot of Earl Grey, with cream on the side. I really love milk in my tea. I'm secretly British. |

Earl Grey with milk? Posh people will tell you that's sacrilege - like putting Ginger Ale in a single malt whiskey. This thread reminds me of the wonderful film Mona Lisa. Int: Very upmarket hotel. Waiter approaches George who is dressed in uncharacteristically fine clothing. Waiter: A... bloody mary, sir? George (Bob Hoskins): No, I'll 'ave some tea. Waiter: Very good, sir. Earl Grey or Darjeeling? George: No - tea.

I buy Whittard's strong Earl Grey and the single reason I started having it with milk is because it says on the bag "Drunk with milk". I was hesitant at first, but I tried it and really liked it. PS: Posh people can... well, you know what they can do! |

obvouisly very new and more than likely a pile of shite too ( i wouldn't be too surprised if they were owned or founded by Irish distrillers), jameson - which si traditional is drinkable, Powers another traditional is ok but Paddys is shite. A lot of the traditional whiskeys were lost in the 60's and early 70's. If Irish distrillers had been in england a trade monolpoly inquiry would have been necessary for all their purchases. The best and only whiskey is Bushmills and since the old man had a heart scare he has water in his whiskey now so won't buy it. In the mid or late 80's when they brought out bushmills malt they did a great discount in Belfast it was treated with great distain from what i heard. It was marketed and made for overseas. try all three and then look at the price margins now. |

Well, you may be right about the other one being a newbie, but Tyrconnell have been distilling since 1762... and they're not cheap. It's rather nice stuff.
Jameson's used to be my tipple of choice - back when I liked a double at the end of a nice evening of beer drinking. Those were the days...

nope never seen it or even heard of it, trying for the life of me to remember the two Belfast distillery's that went out in the 60's , we even had a water jug with the name on it. That's were Distrillery the oldest club in ireland gets it's name like many other footie teams it was a works team. |

No, I'm not getting confused, Peter - It's a fact that Earl Grey is more than often served without milk, even though it's not uncommon for milk to be added, even by the toffs. It's still frowned upon by purists as spoiling its fine taste, but people can - and invariably will - do what they like. Is there nothing you won't argue about?

I love my tea and I love my coffee, preferably coconut cream coffee. If I could only chose one, I would chose tea. I enjoy the fruit or herbal teas by themselves or with honey or sugar. I have added milk, just a splash, if the tea is strong. I never have sugar in my coffee, way to sweet and I always have a cream, not milk with my coffee. If I had to drink coffee with milk, I prefer to have tea. I voted scientist have to much time and money to waste.....our hard earned tax $$$$$. |

How to Make Chai Tea (which has milk in it) Ingredients * 2 teaspoons fresh ginger root; grated * 1 whole star anise; broken up * 1 teaspoon orange peel; grated * 4 pieces cinnamon sticks; 1 1/2 inch * 1 teaspoon cardamom seeds * 10 whole cloves * 5 whole peppercorns * 5 cups water * 1/4 cup black tea leaves; (like Assam or Darjeeling) * 1 teaspoon vanilla * 1/4 cup honey * 3 cups skim milk Steps 1. Bundle up the first seven ingredients in a length of cheese cloth and tie it together with a string. This is called a bouquet garni (pronounced "boo-KAY gar-NEE"). 2. Place the bouquet garni in a pot of water. The string should be tied to the handle for easy removal later on. 3. Bring the water to a very low boil, then reduce the heat and simmer. Boiling water may extract too much bitterness from the tea leaves. 4. Add tea leaves and continue simmering for 15 minutes. 5. Remove the bouquet garni. 6. Strain the remaining liquid through a sieve to remove tea leaves. 7. Add honey, vanilla, and milk. 8. Serve. Pour the mixture over crushed ice if you're serving it cold. This makes eight servings. |

Hmm, beans on toast. I've had it before and it's not that bad, Tassy. It looks gross, but it does taste good. |

sorry your wrong, some of us have been a barman at a 4 star hotel milk or cream to be added to tray. i never had the milk or cream returned unopened. in fact i have come across very few people if any, i am trying to remember because it is a weird thing to do, in the five different parts of the country that i have lived, that doesn't take milk in tea, and then it is Herbal. and this is all a GERMAN plot. |

Beans on toast is delish. My grandmother used to make a dish she called bean mess. It was something that she came up with during the depression to feed her large family cheaply. It had crispy fried bacon bits and onions sweated in the bacon fat then add the beans salt and pepper to taste and put it over toast. I still love it to this day and so does everyone I have ever served it to. |

HP sauce is a savoury, fruity, spicy sauce said to have been invented & first served in the Houses of Parliament, hence 'HP'. |

I was cleaning out my pantry yesterday and found an unopened jar of Branston Pickle. The date was 1995 . heh, it's a big pantry
. Anyway I love that stuff on wheat bread with cheddar and tomato. Oh yeah!! Beans on toast great too. Love it for breakfast on a cold morning!

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!

The original recipe for HP Sauce was invented and developed by Frederick Gibson Garton, a grocer from Nottingham. He registered the name H.P. Sauce in 1896. Garton called the sauce HP because he had heard that a restaurant in the Houses of Parliament had begun serving it (indeed, bottle labels today carry a picture of the Palace of Westminster). Garton sold the recipe and HP brand for the sum of £150 and the settlement of some unpaid bills to Edwin Samson Moore. Moore, the founder of the Midlands Vinegar Company (the forerunner of HP Foods) subsequently launched HP Sauce in 1903. Some stories suggest that the name HP was derived from the name Harry Palmer. Palmer was said to have invented the recipe and sold the product as "Harry Palmer's Famous Epsom Sauce". The story then goes that Palmer, an avid gambler at the Epsom races, was forced to sell the recipe (to cover his debts) to F.G. Garton, a grocer from Nottingham. However, there is no evidence in the official history of the brand to show Palmer existed, or had any claim to the development of the recipe. It also seems unlikely that Garton, a grocer from the Midlands would have come in contact with a gambler from the South of England. Earlier today when I read Peters comment about HP sauce not wanting to appear ignorant, especially where a foodstuff was concerned I googled it, this was what I found. I have had the pleasure of tasting many exotic and rare things over the course of my life but have never been privy to the delights of this sauce. However I can now assure you that I will most definately try and find some and taste it. I hope it is as least as good as Worsteshire Sauce which I think compliments almost anything you can put on a plate. |

Okay, thankyou Irene. That helps because I was imaging something akin to Heinz 57 when I read about the fruitiness of this sauce. I am still determined to find it and try it. |

Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies - and is therefore officially evil.

I understand why it is evil to you Andy, but I can`t help myself have loved the stuff since I was a tiny little girl. There is only one brand that will do as far as I`m concerned and that is Lea and Perrins. I could almost drink it as a shot , that is how much I love it. |

Well, thank you all for the abundance of HP sauce information. Oh my. The internet and Betsy rule! By the way Betsy if you want some HP sauce I'll mail you some if you can't find it anywhere. They sell it right down the street here, along with the Heinz vegetarian beans to put on that toast, as if I would do that. <_< I noticed Andy that my grocery store sells regular HP sauce, fruity HP sauce and HP curry sauce. How is the HP curry sauce? And how is fruity HP sauce different from plain old HP sauce? Sorry Mark for hijacking this thread and turning from the tea to HP thread. |

The HP Curry sauce is a little too sweet and not spicy enough for my taste. The HP fruity sauce isn't as spicy as original HP sauce and is also quite sweet & fruity - like a cross between HP sauce and mango chutney.
The HP Chilli sauce isn't bad - but there are other brands I prefer. |

Thanks so much Andy for answering about the HP distinctions. I was considering the HP curry sauce, but I don't like a sweet tasting sauce on anything much less as a curry. I'm going to brave the wilds of Germantown tomorrow and get the HP sauce. Now the dilemma -- what to put it on? |
