I found this to be interesting on what the meaning of some of the things we do on New year's Eve.

THE clock strikes midnight. Fireworks explode and you turn to your significant other (or the best-looking person within range) to exchange a kiss and wish them a happy new year. But do you really have any idea why you do this on New Year's Eve?

Most of us are blissfully unaware that the fireworks are there to chase away evil spirits and the kiss is supposed to guarantee us a year filled with affection from loved ones. The rituals of New Year's Eve are steeped in tradition and superstition from the fireworks through to the clothes we wear.

Various cultures around the world have long believed loud noises keep evil spirits at bay. So the Chinese let off firecrackers to mark Chinese New Year and we combine fashion and function with beautiful and noisy fireworks displays.

And here's some good news, shoppers – it is actually very bad luck to be wearing old clothes when the calendar clicks over into New Year's Day. You need to start the year as you hope it to go on, so wearing new clothes will ensure plenty of new things come your way in 2007.

So go on, get that new frock.

Another handy superstition you may like to cite on Monday stipulates it is imperative no laundry be done on New Year's Day lest it hasten the death of a family member.

Similarly, the Chinese believe that washing your hair on this day can wash away your good luck for the year.

And if you want to inject a bit of international flavour to your celebrations, take a leaf from Spain's book and bring along some grapes. Spaniards traditionally eat 12 grapes – one inserted into the mouth at each stroke of the clock at midnight. Revellers are supposed to have finished all 12 by the time the clock finishes chiming.

The tradition is believed to have started as a way to get rid of excess grapes during a bumper harvest.

PEACE and love to my friends, Judy

When the Power of Love over comes the Love of Power, the world will know Peace.

:o :o :o Now I see that I've gotta swear something new tonight, so I guess I'll be heading to the mall. :( I like the fact that I'll have an excuse to skip doing laundry or washing my hair!!

Thanks, Judy!! :D :D
