Lawmaker won't apologize for 'Islamophobic' letter; Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode

I came across this tonight and got rather wound up about it, thought I'd post it and see if anyone is on my wavelength with it. Basically one of the districts in the state of Minnesota recently elected someone that's of the Muslim faith, and Rep. Goode is having a field day with the concept of the newly elected Representative Keith Ellison's request to be sworn in with the Koran.

Personally I say that if this fellow is a follower of Islam then having him sworn in on a Bible would be rather ridiculous and impractical ... Rep. Goode has decided, well ... just read the article.

Question one:

What book did Joe Lieberman hold?

Incidentally, Congressmen are not sworn in on any book. The book is purely for the photo op, should they choose to have one.

Question one:

What book did Joe Lieberman hold?

I'd presume the Hebrew Bible or the Tanakh (or as Christians might refer to it, The Old Testament).

Thinking that the issue that got me riled was the level of insensitivity and blatant disrespect toward those that voted the man into office that this guy has leveled through his version of what public service is about (is he saying that one can't be within the sphere of public service unless he's of the mind to abide by the Western concept of spirituality?).

If the people of Minnesota are alright with what this guy has to bring to the table then what's the problem? If he's proud to be a Muslim and of being the first Muslim elected to congress then in my opinion more power to him, I don't think it should be viewed as anything more than that ... and I'd like to see it evolve into something profound rather than petty and trivial.

What I find insulting is that this is the first time anyone has made an issue out of someone not holding the Bible. What of all the agnostics who affirm instead? What of the Jewish reps?

And as for Hannity suggesting that if this person can use the Koran than someone could just as easily choose to hold Mein Kampf, give me a break!
No, give Hannity a break instead. Either leg will do!

Geez.....talk about inflammatory! What a bigot...he makes me sick. I thought our Congressmen and Representatives represented all people in their districts, but evidently not. If you are Muslim and live in the Virginia 5th District, you are just out of luck if you expect to be represented.

Keith Ellison has been a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2002 and has a very good, clean record. He was born and raised in the United States of America, he was raised as a Roman Catholic before he converted to Islam. One of his brothers is a Baptist minister.

Mr. Goode takes this opportunity to show what ill informed bigot he is by slamming Muslims and insinuating that Representative Ellison is an illegal immigrant. In his tirade he attacks immigrants and the Quran.

All my best wishes go out to Representative Ellison and I hope that boob Representative Goode gets what he has coming to him.

Really! Besides, some former presidents have had no book in their swearing in ceremony or used a law book. Can't remember who exactly , but I'll find out.

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
September 14, 1901 -- Theodore Roosevelt
1.The only President not sworn in on a Bible. Mr. Ansley Wilcox, at whose home Roosevelt took the oath of office, wrote in 1903, "According to my best recollection no Bible was used, but President Roosevelt was sworn in with uplifted hand." (The Presidents and Their Wives, p. 3)

John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' !

Yeah ... I think that he was a humanist wasn't he (Theodore Roosevelt)?

I read a little bit of Rep. Ellison's response and he's being really even-headed about it, he'd like to meet with Rep. Goode and see if they can find some "common ground." Hoping that comes to pass, as it stands it just feels like Rep. Goode is pandering to some extreme demographics ... I'm totally fed up with that mantra at this moment. Got tired of that rhetoric round about the middle of 2001, or possible the beginning of 2002 ... probably earlier than that to be honest. But man there was far too much of it happening in 2002 though 2005.

I know that while it may be sadly true that playing to an extremists may gather you some additional votes, history tends to remember these people in a rather poor light.

I was actually a little surprised by this. I thought a congressman should know that America is a land of many different people who all have many different views. Someone who was just elected to congress happens to be a Muslim? Great. Muslims believe in the same God this congressman says he believes in. This new congressman wants to hold a copy of the Koran when he is sworn in? Wonderful. He wants to show his dedication to his faith's belief in the Word of God. I'll take a Muslim who truly believes in the Koran over a Christian who uses the Bible as a decoration any day.

Also, maybe I'm confused, but what does any of this have to do with immigration?
With great power comes great responsibility. With great age....
What was I going to say?
