I believe we all can agree that by knowing who the popular members of our board are can help us (all) to enhance our communicational skills by studying and applying their attitudes and techniques to ourselves, while maintaining our individualism. I suggest we all look at this as a learning mechanism, and not depreciate articulate and dynamic peronalities by tagging them with negative connotations. Let us all live, love and learn by seeing the positive points. They're there when you look for them.

Boy ... now that's a whole lotta syllables to wrap one's head around (lol). Nicely stated, but you want us to do what??? "... enhance our communicational skills by studying and applying their attitudes and techniques to ourselves."

... so like, is this ultimately supposed to be a test???

Just laugh if you can ... I really don't think I want an answer. :hyper:

Hello all, long time no speak.

As always I will throw in my 'not' politically correct view.

Last year I didn't participate over at that 'other' place because it made me sick to my stomach that some morons thought who the hell they were and actually thought they won an Academy Award. The thanking of every single person turns my stomach and makes me want to vomit.

I believe that Andy always does or tries to do what's best for everyone, but you can't make everyone happy all the time.

To those knuckleheads that oppose the voting for something that 99.9% of the population here think is harmless fun, how about not bothering to read the thread?

Why should a public vote be notified by PM? Do you people actually read what you write?

So if you don't open the thread or bother to read it you have ZERO chance of getting your feelings hurt or thinking some absurd crap like people are in cliques. God how I hate that word!!

So Andy, my advice to you, and it's only advice, is to stop catering to the whiners and the minority when it's the majority that keeps your board alive and well.

Have a good day all, and as Beethoven once said "I'll be Bach"! :D

I was out of town this weekend...and came home to find this thread...interesting.

I'm not surprised that I then found that Beatnut's post is the one that I could have written myself. All of it. Every word I agree with. Thanks Beatnut!

I love this place, because even though people have disagreeing opinions for the most part it's civil. Andy and Fiona keep up the good work. I know it's hard controlling us people sometimes.

Well, I must say that this debate has surely created the possibility of some new award categories.  :D

Oh yeah! Like what? :D

Lacivious Librarian.

Hugs Beatnut, so nice to see you.

Most lewd and lascivious librarian - a most viable category!

How about "best drunk dialer"? Anyone come to mind, Betsy? :D

Well, I put no opinion. I thought the awards were a good idea, but there were also loads and loads of different sections and I don't think I would have ever got round to voting, or been able to vote. I don't know if other people feel the same way. I don't think I would have been able to pick. I don't feel the awards were mean or devisive in anyway, I just would have liked em to be shorter that's all. Maybe that's just me being lazy, but somewhere between five and ten categories would have been preferable! :D

What does bother me is that the opinion of a single person or maybe two or three people allowed the awards to be canceled.

This is what I abhorred about PM.com. The complaints of a few led to the rejection of the majority's wants.

While, at another level, the complaints of dozens were ignored.

I fail to see the issue here. As Fiona said, if Member X is voted Most Delicious that does not mean that the rest of us taste bad. It is simply a harmless acknowledgement of Member X. There is no way to make this point without sounding arrogant, so f*ck it (there probably is, but I am too thirsty to care). Call me arrogant. I happen to be a kick ass musician. I have a fairly impressive CV. I went to one or two decent schools. Now what if Chad "wins" the Most Successful Musician Award? Does this completely negate all of my accomplishments of the last 20 years? Am I going to quit my job and go live in a cave? Probably not. Am I going to firebomb his house and refuse to ever speak to those who voted for him? Not likely.

The reason I picked Chad for this example is because I am reasonably certain that he is not so hypersensitive that he will throw a hissy fit. Some people likely would. So Chad gets my vote for Least Likely To Hissy Fit. If anyone is offended that I did not vote for you, tough sh*t.

Of course there are cliques. This board was created out of a clique. There are a few references I can make that maybe two or three people would understand. All of us can say the same. I see little inside jokes around here all the time. The reason no one else understands your little joke is because they are not part of that particular clique. That is not automatically a bad thing. People naturally gravitate toward like minded other people.

As for the balloting procedure, if everything is secret, what is the point? This is a message board. Its very purpose is for public discussions. Having a secret ballot process and a sudden announcement would be rather boring. Half of the fun of something like this is the accompanying discussion. So far, the discussion has been all of the fun.

Several people have suggested that those who oppose this simply ignore the related threads and not participate. That is always an option. But instead of being upset that you did not "win" Most Eclectic Hairstyle, why not just be happy for whoever did. If you are really that insecure that you cannot be happy for someone else's meaningless accomplishments, you have bigger problems than whatever is said on an internet message board.

The outcome of these fake awards will in no way advance your career or bank account, so why worry about it. Unless there are cash prizes. In which case, ignore everything I have said and vote for me.

I like the idea because it gives us all an excuse to publically compliment our friends here without embarrassing them too much.
Naturally, some people are going to be included and others are not in any individual's list. It doesn't mean we don't like the people who didn't quite make it to the list. There have been a couple of times this year when it has got back to me that some people think I didn't like them. I can honestly say that there is nobody here who I don't like - just people who I know better than others.

If I never did it, I was only waiting
For a better moment, that didn't come

You know what comes next. This gives us the moment.

I voted YES and I agree with Bill.

Miss Mary

We do awards at another board I go to and an e-mail address is set up where people can nominate board members in certain categories, the nominations are tallied and posted. The members then vote for the winners via e-mail and the winners get posted. I think it works out well because your votes are anonymous but you can still enjoy the fun and see who won.

I think it's a fun idea and I don't post too much so I wouldn't expect people to vote for me, but it's still fun to participate nontheless. The voting process should be private though, in my opinion.

I had been avoiding this thread because I have feelings both ways. But ultimately it IS harmless fun. Will probably do it like Olen, print out the member list and make sure I don't miss anyone.

But damn, now that we're being titillated with the prospects of our first b*tch fight I'm voting YES! (sorry to throw you into that category Fiona  ) Andy, very chivalrous of you standing up for your lady! Something tells me M8MT could put a few guys "halfway into next Friday" also. Ah, the advantages of anonymity. :D :P :D

I know my vote didn't help make what I want win, so there we go.

With that, let the cliquefest begin. All the grauteed winners, Andy, Fiona, Tassy, Olen, Linda, Tom, Dottie, Chad, Merry, congrats.

All the rest of us, hey, it's just a silly little thing and you guys are the true winners. I'm not trying to start a fight here. I'm not trying be mean or harsh to this. I am merely stating simple truth here. That's all. I've said my bit and if you want to repimand me or try to ban me for this comment, then fine. I know what I feel and I won't change my opinion one bit.

Perhaps "I Know I Said I Wouldn't Participate, But I Can't Help Myself" award?

Okay ... I realize that it might look as though I'm vying for the "I Know I Said I Wouldn't Participate, But I Can't Help Myself" award at this point (I'm not by the way), but it seems to me that several of these folks have a good deal of posts under their belt.

What exactly does that mean ... well for one thing, name or screen name recognition. If those of you that have been here for quite some time and have posted in numerous threads (and created numerous threads) end up getting recognition for having enlivened the site what's the problem with that? Does it really have to come down to "in groups" and "out groups" or just some type of recognition being the driving factor?

... this is a really small community in the comparable sense. I mean there are less than 300 members at this point, why in the world does it have to be anything other than acknowledging those that make the site interesting and diverse? Obviously I've only been here a short time, and so maybe my opinion on the matter is of little consequence ... but for goodness sakes, there really shouldn't be any issue about people making "choices" and acknowledging each other.

Good luck on tallying everything ...

Bridget, I like you a lot, but I think you are taking this thing WAY too seriously. Maybe you need to take a break from the internet and get out and smell the roses. I'm not trying to be condasending, but when I start taking things online seriously (which I have) I stop and smell the roses.
Am I in a clique, because if I am I wonder which one I'm in. I talk to certain people in here more than others, but Bridget, IT'S NATURAL. People will go to those who have the same interests they have. Cliques don't have to be negative as someone said in this thread.
I'm getting sick of people saying that there are cliques in here when I haven't seen it with my eyes. I just see people with like interests getting together to have FUN. Isn't that what we all came here for? If you start taking online stuff too seriously, you're going to not be happy. I've been through it personally, and it's not fun.

Molly, I think we both at one time use too. But, I learn not too.om, sometimes i do.

What was that you said.. :P :D  NO! just kidding. You make a good point.. :) I am glad you are apart of the board.

Bridget, honestly... I have never won any of the categories in any of the awards. I suppose it's possible I might this year as people have much more reason to suck up to me this time around. :D

Miss Mozart, honestly... I accept the challenge.

Rose, it's not that they affect MY life. I'm just saying it, because personally, I see it as a popularity contest. Simple as that. It's my opinion and I wanted to be heard and if that's bothering you, then tell me to shut up and I will. That easy.

You are entitled to your opinion and everyone knows what your opinion is...You don't want to be involved in a popularity contest, yet you continue to read and post on a topic that obviously offends you. You even go so far as to congratulate the people you see as the 'popular' ones ( which, btw, You LEFT ME OUT ... )
So you have in fact, voted.
And I'm crushed.

Ok...now I'm over it.
See how easy that was?

Hey, let's not get into my personal life here, thank you. That is a whole other area which is fine. End of that.

Molly, by the cliques I refer to is people who get their own little threads, ect. Now that is a little unfair to others because that automatically scures votes and wins for those who have a following.

Now I am not taking this seriously, say as I am with my law classes. You can have a 40 hour conversation with me on that if you want serious. I'm just one who likes to have a COMMUNITY, not a popularity contest. I'm like this is because I'm shocked at the fact that there is such a thing going on here when I thought we were a community. I have kept silent over the months when I saw people getting their own threads and such, but when this came about, it was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. It made me see that yes, we are a community in some ways, but not really. That broke my heart.

Oh, I see it is crystal clear now. You don`t have your own thread. Wow, If you would just dig deep into the back pages in this section of the message board you would see that you do. We have a thread for all the people who have no thread of their own. Gee, why didn`t you just come out and say that this was what all the animosity from you was all about in the beginning. A lot of blathering and hurt feelings could have been prevented.

I know it exist because I started it. So dig deep and find that thread and start posting girl. You are one of the many who had no thread until I started one for those of us who don`t.

Now can we move on and in the words of Rodney King, can`t we all just get along. :D

No, no, you're not getting it. I'm probably not making myself clear as well. Let me put it this way, the day when everyone, I mean everyone, on here gets their own thread and their own brownosers(not just friends), then yeah, I'll be cool with it. I only want fairness for everyone, not a popularity contest of who's the best poster, ect, ect. So until everyone is united around here, I'll be against things like this.

Did my point come clearer now?

Sadly it did not. You are making a mountain out of a mole hill in my opinion. If you feel everyone on this board should have their own personal thread with their on personal entourage of brown nosers then what is preventing you from starting said threads and brown nosing your way to glory. If you personally perceive the threads that some people have that have been started by friends of theirs is that type of thing, then you are showing a total lack of maturity.

Perhaps you should choose your battles a bit more carefully. Why is this particular one so important to fight. If you are indeed feeling alienated and disenfranchised you have only succeeded in making yourself moreso by riding this dead horse. Is that what you really wanted. What shocked and appalled me about the beginning of this whole thing was that you attacked and insulted the person who gave us this forum in the first place. You could have made Andy and Fiona aware of how you were feeling via pms rather than put it all out on the board in such an insensitive manner.
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand

And further more I found your backhanded apology thread to be far more offensive than any thread on this board. Yet the members of this group rallied around you on that thread and said there there dear it is okay, including the people you hurt most, which shows how fair, kind and big hearted people in this group can be. You do not even have the grace and dignity to appreciate that.

You really need to take a good look at all you have said and done and how many people you hurt, and how many people were willing to let by gones be bygones.

You really need to take a good look at all you have said and done and how many people you hurt, and how many people were willing to let by  gones be bygones.

betsy, be nice. I see that she is hurting. she feels left out, the way I use to when I first started on thse boards.. In time she get use to us and feel loved.

Bridget, I think I understand what you're saying and I sense your frustration in being misunderstood - I hate that as well! It may just end up that these awards are about popularity or more like familiarity, but it is all in fun, really. You speak about the importance of fairness and equality, but I just don't see how the light-hearted acknowledgement of some members preclude fairness or equality on this forum or compromise the sense of community we have here.

Dottie it is not my intention to not be nice. Bridget is certainly not a newbie on this board or PM.com. I see she is hurting and for that I feel badly for her. However she is choosing not to discuss how she feels in a productive an adult like fashion. This is what I do not understand. From where I sit she has certainly got more than her fair share of admirers and friends here. I have a hard time not speaking up when I see someone who goes out of their way to hurt people unnecessarily. We all are human and we all make mistakes and need second chances and more sometimes. If Bridget is going to be given the leeway to be honest about how she is feeling, then she needs to afford the rest of us the same luxury. This happens to be the way I`m feeling about all this right now.

You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand

It's really nice to not want any feelings to be hurt, but as far as I know none have when it comes to these awards. As for the threads for specific people, most members are just better friends with some people than they are with others. It's life, I'm afraid!

So please stop saying that!!!!!!

I'm just sadden that we have to do something like this. That's all.

So I'm now done, I've done the job of offending everyone like Betsy said. Thanks for calling my apology backhanded, but I felt a little bewildered when this whole was brought back up again in the first place! I thought it was over and done with myself and now I see this again and it made me angry! So much for bygone being bygones!

Maybe some of us are "hurt" for being singled out as being in a clique!

And Bridget, you told me to think about it? Well I did and I still don't see it. I don't get how I'm in some sort of clique.

I think any fun that could have come out of these awards is spoiled now.

Bridget think about it honey. Especially since your chosen career for the future is in the law. Do you think it was just and fair to kill an entire thread based on the objection of one person. That is exactly what happened. Apparently a good number of the members of this community felt very disappointed that that was allowed to happen. And as it has been stated over and over in many different ways, you have the freedom to not participate in that which you do not agree with.

If those who wish to do so are not allowed to because 1 or 2 people get their panties in a bunch over it, how is that showing that we have a community that is any better than what we were dealing with at the other place?

You made everyone aware of how you felt. It is only fair that you extend the same respect and courtesy to accept that there are many more who do not share your feelings on this particular subject but that in no way means that we do not like you. Care for you, or enjoy your participation on this forum. Exercise your right of personal censcorship by not partaking in the threads that you do not feel comfortable in joining in on. It is really very simple.
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand

Hey, look on the bright side. At least you'll win the "Member Most Likely to Whine & Complain Award"

Holy Crap!! I wonder what some of you people were like in High Sccool when at the end of every Senior Year they had King of the Prom, Queen of the Prom, Most Popular, Cutest Guy, Cutest Girl, Most Likely to Succeed, Most Charismatic, etc..

I would have hated to have been the one who got stuck on the Yearbook Committee!!

Yeah, this should not be taken seriously. I don't think there's a clique mentality here at all, quite the opposite actually. I don't post as much as a lot of people but I'm still treated with respect and my questions are always answered, I don't feel ignored.

I look at this as a fun way to acknowledge people, it may be a popularity contest, but so what, aren't most awards like that? I understand your point Bridget, but I'm sure I'm less "popular" than you and I'm not hurt by this, you can't let it affect you. Just don't read the thread, simple as that.

Thanks for those who took my post off, I was going to edit it. :P

I'm just afriad now that andy won't even do the Awards because of of what is going on. I hope that doesn't happen.
I don't want to see Bridget go because we disagree on things and she thinks she's getting picked on, but sometimes when you voice an opposing opinion you have to expect to get nailed upon.
I just want to awards to happen, and not let one person's opinion ruin it.

I'm kinda hurt by this, Bridget. Remember the Vespa thread I started specifically for you? And I'll never forget the VERY first reply I saw when I posted here for the first time:

(Runs over and tackles Chad) ALLL RIGHHT!! :D

How the hell are ya?!

To which I replied:

(Chad gets back up and wipes himself off and then gives Bridget a noogie)

Hey girly-girl!!!!!! Missed ya! :D

But now I'm in a clique that you want nothing to do with? :hmm:

Naming names in a message board is not a good thing, IMHO. This is what happens. You point people out like that you're going to hurt feelings. You don't want to hurt feelings, Bridget, yet you are hurting feelings by naming names. Does that make any sense? :hmm:

Let me put it this way, the day when everyone, I mean everyone, on here gets their own thread and their own brownosers(not just friends), then yeah, I'll be cool with it. I only want fairness for everyone, not a popularity contest of who's the best poster, ect, ect. So until everyone is united around here, I'll be against things like this.

So let's get this straight Bridget, you'd rather clog up the board with 300 separate 'brown-nosing' threads than see an award thread happen?

And that would prove what exactly?

I originally respected your opinion on this when you first posted but now I find what you say to be a huge "look at me, I'm really angry and you all have to think exactly like I do" tantrum. I have to conclude this especially in light of the fact that these awards were initiated by Andy who has to be universally admired as the world's best moderator. He really only has the best intentions.

It seems as though most of the board likes the idea of the awards. I know I do, and I like the idea of people posting their invidividual awards. Inititally I recommended against people posting their awards publically because I thought people would be hurt. But now I agree with several who have posted that anyone who is hurt has the right not to look at the thread.

In fact anyone who is so hurt by the very existence of the thread needs to turn off the computer and get out in the sunshine.

Ok, I took a break and a breather, beat some fustration out on the drums and while doing so, I had a thought.

I've been pent up with some fustration in my personal life lately and had at the time I made the first post on this thread today, been working on a stressing project for one of my classes. I know it's a very poor excuse, but I think just seeing this again and my bewilerment of the subject along with my personal stress came together and clashed, again.

Again, I am deeply heartful regetful of my actions and will PM Andy to see if he can remove those posts. I never meant to hurt anyone, it was just a mix of emotions. Yes, I do know it sounds lame to say that and a cop out, but honestly, I can't really explain anything else to discribe how I feel. Those who choose to accept this, I thank you in advance. Those who do not, that's understandable. I was overboard and was wrong to be so.
