NEW YORK - A man hoping to reconcile with his parents after years of estrangement made a grisly find: His mother may have been living with his father's corpse for three years, police said.

When Paul Iversen went to the Brooklyn apartment Tuesday, his 73-year-old mother, Joanne, told him his father, Frank, had died, police said. She showed her son the skeletal remains of an adult man stored under bed covers in her bedroom, according to police.

The medical examiner was to conduct tests to confirm the identity of the remains, police Sgt. Mike Wysokowski said. No charges had been filed.

Neighbors said Joanne Iversen had told them her husband was away.

"I said, 'I haven't seen your husband,' and she said, 'He's in Philadelphia.' She told others 'Long Island,'" said an upstairs neighbor, Vincent Clements.

Several neighbors said they had noticed a foul smell emanating from the Iversens' first-floor apartment but couldn't fathom the source.

"We complained a lot, but I never would have guessed there was a body inside," neighbor Carole Clements said.

It's called mental illness. Very sad.

She's a procrastinator, she kept meaning to call someone. (I'm only kidding...BAD joke!)

Actually, Andy is right. Surprisingly, this is not a totally unheard of thing. People who are a little unstable will often snap at the death of a loved one. This womans husband was probably the only thing she had, and turning loose of him at his death was more than she could bear, so she kept him. More than likely, she had no way to contact her son, and she may hve not had the money for a funeral. Given the number of obstacles she had, in her mind, it was better to keep him with her. This way she was able to talk to him about her problems and lean on him as she had always done. He was probably a controller, and she had never been able to make decisions, so in her mind, he was still there guiding her along. Often in this kind of case, you will find that the person could not make it alone on their meager social security, and will keep the other persons body, in order to continue to be able to get the ss check in order to survive.

It is terribly sad.

Hound Dog, you crack me up! Does a body good to listen to you sometimes!

Actually, if you want to be honest about it, there are a lot of men who come across as just being dead in bed. <_<

Maybe your whole building smelled, and they couldn't tell the difference. I'm just surprised that they flys on the doors and windows didn't give it away!

hell i remember being told about a young pw in wigan or warrington opening the garage door and being engulfed by the flies. four years ago iwas ion hospital and then afterwards at my mum's for a couple of weeks walking up the stairs i said to her someone is DEAD. Getting close to my door i looked at her and said MEAT. Yes she had accidentally knocked off all the electricity into the flat at the end of July. The little fridge and freezer had to be dumped could not rid of the smell. Curtains and cloth that do not get stained by blood can be washed but expect three or four washes to get rid of the smell.
