Junk food ads during TV programmes targeted at under-16s will be banned, under rules put forward by regulators.

Ofcom says these foods include any that are high in fat, salt and sugar.

There will be a total ban on ads during children's programmes and on children's channels, as well as adult programmes watched by a large number of children.

Health bodies said Ofcom should have banned junk food ads before the 9pm watershed, but the food industry said the restrictions were "over the top".

Ofcom's measures will come into effect before the end of January 2007.

They are set to cost broadcasters an estimated £39 million in lost advertising revenue, Ofcom said.

The measures will apply to:

* All pre-school children's programmes,
* All programmes on mainstream channels aimed at children
* All cable and satellite children's channels
* Programmes aimed at young people, such as music shows
*General entertainment programmes which would appeal to a "higher than average" number of under 16s.

Sounds great. I can't tell you the amount of crap I would see advertised during cartoons - more than during regular programming! Fruit Loops, GoGurt, Hot Pockets... makes you wonder how much more impressionable they think kids are.

APA Report on Ads and Kids

Why Advertising to Kids Works

Parents need to step up to the plate here, folks! Although I do think there's case law supporting the ban on ads towards kids (i.e. cigarettes and liquor), and don't really have an issue with the law being changed.

I think that, on the whole, it's a good thing - although I think there is a time and a place for 'treats'. I believe that the current trend which is seeing our food becoming healthier can only be a positive thing and am pleased that the government is taking steps to tackle the serious problem of child (and adult) obesity. Now, if they could make the healthier food cheaper, I think that would help low income families even more.

I don't want the freaking governemtn telling me what is bad or what isn't bad to eat. It's my responsiblity to me and if I had kids it would be MY, I repeat MY responsibility, not the government's responsibility to tell what people can do.

They're not telling people what they can and can't eat, Molly - just banning advertising junk foods when children are most likely to be watching. I don't think that's a terrible thing.
