Kitten in Sewer; How can people be so mean?
Topic Started: Nov 12 2006, 05:45 PM (320 Views)
~LovelyRita~

Friday night it was about 4:30 am and I was asleep in my dorm room. My roommate then came in with a squealing something bundled in her arms. Confused, it took me a minute to realize that it was a tiny kitten. She and some other people she was with had heard it meowing from inside a large sewer. It had just started raining and they could see the soaking kitten struggling to stay out of the increasingly fast flow of water. Luckily one of them was kind enough (and brave enough) to climb down and rescue it. It was standing next to a clawed plastic bag, so it looks like some cold hearted person dropped it down there. Of course it's against the rules to have an animal in our dorm rooms, but we bought some cat food and it curled up next to me for the rest of the night. Luckily my roommates' cousin lives in the area and works at a vets office, so she took it and is going to give it to a no kill shelter.

It was such an adorable and sweet black and brown kitten. How anybody could have been so cruel to abandon it is beyond me. The world makes me sick sometimes.

Thanks for saving the kitty, Gracie! That makes me sick that someone could just toss it away like that.

I'm really glad it's okay :o I never understood why people would be so creul to animals  So, you took it to a no-kill shelter, eh? I really, truly hope it finds a loving family. Tortoise shells are such fun little kitties ;)

I have a cat sanctuary  . At the present time I have about 30 or more of the little fellas that people have just thrown away  I find homes for them if I can, if not, they just continue to live on the farm until they are old. I sometimes think it is so pleasant for them here that they go out and bring home their friends!

I have a dog that I rescued at the side of the road. I had noticed a Budweiser beer box at the side of the road for about three days. It's probably half a mile away from my house. You get to where you notice new trash and stuff laying out, if you travel it enough. One morning as I passed the box I saw it moving. I backed down the road and got out to see what it was...I was afraid there would be a snake in it! Just as I got to the box a little nose came out of the handle hole on the side and began whimpering. It was a little Rottweiler pup...probably 6 weeks old. The box was taped shut and he had been thrown out! I gathered him up and took him into town to my vet. He had urine burns all over his tummy where he had been wetting all over himself for several days, evidently. He was dehydrated and starved. The doctor started him on antibiotics and gave him some fluids. It was the middle of summer, and I didn't think he would ever quit drinking water. I brought him home and we named him Budwiser "Bud" for shourt. The next day we had a freak kind of flash flood, and the beer box he had been in, washed down the creek. He would have drowned if I had not seen the box moving!!!!! He was a lap puppy for quite awhile, I couldn't even go to the toilet without him coming along. Now he is gigantic and a big old goof ball...thinks he is still a lap pup, even though he lives in the back yard!

That was so nice of you and your roommate to save the kitten.

The paperwork for my two (who I got from the local humane society) said they were found in dumpsters at about the same age as the kitten you found. They were then in foster care until ready for adoption. Lucky for me, I showed up within minutes of their being put up for adoption and I got two of the litter.

Oh what an adorable Tortie. My old cat was one and she was so beautiful. This was probably a female, since most Torties are female (not all, but most are).

That's so nice of you. I wish I lived somewhere where I could rescue and keep 30 cats! Did you get them all spayed or neutered? That would cost quite a bit for all those cats...

Rita,

I get them all spayed for sure!...the guys line up for neutering when the girls are all taken care of! It does cost quite a bit. Especially when I can sometimes end up with anywhere from two to four litters that have been dropped off every year. That means everyone comes of age at the same time! I'm always thrilled when they are mostly boys... :D It costs a lot to fee them too. I don't ask anyone for any help, it's just me and my hubby doing it for the little fellas. But they are all well fed, and happy as they can be. Some are too well fed!

Most of the "kids" as we call them, are Beatle cats...lol. They have names like:
Max (Maxwells Silver Hammer)
Lucy (in the sky)
Prudence
JoJo
Linda (my grandaughter named HIM....lol)
Blackbird
Jet
Strawberry (he's an orange kitty)
Sally (Long Tall)
Will (I Will)
Paulie
Stella
Mary

You get the idea....lol. We actually have one called Bee...but its because she likes to sleep on top of my bee hives!

My husband calls this the wayward home for animals.
