Read this recently and then thought of the letter that's posted below the link (it's from Jim Gaffigan's website ... a quasi-Manatee advocate): http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15655584/ The Manatee Letters Dear Mr. Gaffigan, My friend Dave and I are manatees and are very excited to see your upcoming show in Boston. We're catching a cab from our home in the main tank at the New England Aquarium, just down the road and across 6 lanes of deadly traffic from where you're playing in Fanueil Hall. Please look for us somewhere around row 10, we'll be the big lumbering masses surrounded by marine biologists who will be constantly wetting our hides and feeding us cod. Never before has anyone captured the life of a manatee as you have in your material. We're a special breed, odd-looking, highly intelligent, yet able to see the funny side of anything...much like you. Thanks for everything you've done for the manatees, especially the Adopt-a-Manatee program that briefly ran in Nebraska. If the program had been instituted in an area that actually had an ocean nearby, we're sure it would have been much more successful. We're big fans...we've even persuaded our friends, the Grouper and the Halibut to catch your appearance on Comedy Central Presents, which is no easy task since they only have basic cable. Thanks for making us laugh...which, if you've never heard a manatee laugh before, sounds a lot like Ethel Merman being put through a hay baler. We look forward to seeing you. As sincerely as one can be while trying to outswim an amorous giant turtle, Gary 'Petey' Manatee David 'Spanky' Manatee New England Aquarium, Boston |

... if you'd actually like to adopt a manatee please follow this link: https://www.donate.net/stm/basket.asp?dept_...opper_id=679706 Not quite sure what 'renewing' a manatee is ... but it must be scientific or something(???) |

I love manatees (or sea cows, for the unedumacated) - they're such beautiful, serene creatures. I'd love to adopt a manatee, but I just don't have the room in the apartment.

Until you attempt to steal their lettuce. Then you'll see the dark side of the manatee. I think Pink Floyd did an album about that, but I could be mistaken.

Yeah, I know! Who would've thought Conan's ad-lib would actually turn into a reality. Sadly though, the Manatee population down here in Florida is really declining. The last I heard about them, they said Manatee's were near extinction because of boating accidents and hunting. I remember one incident where I saw Manatee's in the canal behind my old house. I was playing catch with my friend and we see these two HUGE Manatee's going down the canal alongside each other. The canal is about 40 meters wide and the Manatee's could barely fit. It was strange to see that. I thought the canals would be closed off from such huge animals considering the canals are very polluted. |
