Hi folks,

I'm just wondering how closely our American contingent here reflects the election outcome.

It's purely out of curiosity - there are enough debate threads already.
The vote is anonymous of course. Please do not tell us how you voted, the numbers will say enough.

Thanks! :)

Honest, yes. But please don't put your name to it.

It's a secret ballot and I respect that. There are some people around here for whom I can take a fair guess at ;) but I'm only curious about the numbers. :)

Bill, you need a choice that says "Split the Ticket", unless that's what "Other" is for. But I took "Other" to mean another party.

I agree with Chad, you should have had a choice for those of us who voted for people in both parties. OH NO, I'm bad for doing that. (sarcastic tone there, btw)
I had to vote for other since there wasn't a choice for "Split decision". I voted for who I thought would do the job, I wasn't looking at the parties, which I wish I wish more people would do.

I can't edit the poll now. I did intend "other" for another party, but let's make it also mean neither one nor the other.

Sorry everyone.

There were alot of "undecided" votes I've heard, but overall we've re-elected our Democratic Governor, Jennifer Granholm.

Congratulations to all supporters of the Democrat Party on reclaiming the House of Representatives!

Currently the Senate is up for grabs. 3 seats are still undecided, Missouri, Montana, and Virginia. The democrats need all 3. Montana seems to be in there camp. Missouri is still up for grabs, but outstanding votes are from the democratic areas, so that leaves Virginia. 99% of the vote counted. Networks say 3,000 vote lead for the DEM, Webb and the Secretary of State (the official vote tallier) has the REP, Allen ahead by 3,000 votes. The laws of Virginia compel an automatic recount that will entail 3-4 weeks in either case.

Even if it means the REPs lose the Senate I hope the 1% left to count in Virginia gives one man or the other enough of a win to avoid the automatic recount. I hope when I wake up later today Virginia is decided definitively and let the chips fall where they may.

One very interesting note. If somehow the Republicans keep the senate, it would be the first time in our nation's history that a party out of power in both houses reclaimed power in only one house.

democracy

[Gr.,=rule of the people], term originating in ancient Greece to designate a government where the people share in directing the activities of the state, as distinct from governments controlled by a single class, select group, or autocrat. The definition of democracy has been expanded, however, to describe a philosophy that insists on the right and the capacity of a people, acting either directly or through representatives, to control their institutions for their own purposes. Such a philosophy places a high value on the equality of individuals and would free people as far as possible from restraints not self-imposed. It insists that necessary restraints be imposed only by the consent of the majority and that they conform to the principle of equality.

Development

Democracy first flourished in the Greek city-state, reaching its fullest expression in ancient Athens. There the citizens, as members of the assembly, participated directly in the making of their laws. A democracy of this sort was possible only in a small state where the people were politically educated, and it was limited since the majority of inhabitants were slaves or noncitizens. Athenian democracy fell before imperial rule, as did other ancient democracies in the early Italian cities and the early church. In this period and in the Middle Ages, ideas such as representation crucial to modern Western democracy were developed.

Doctrines of natural law evolved into the idea of natural rights, i.e., that all people have certain rights, such as self-preservation, that cannot be taken from them. The idea of contract followed, that rulers and people were bound to each other by reciprocal obligations. If the sovereign failed in his duties or transgressed on natural rights, the people could take back their sovereignty. This idea, as postulated by John Locke, strongly influenced the development of British parliamentary democracy and, as defined in the social contract theory of Jean Jacques Rousseau, helped form the philosophical justification for the American and French Revolutions. The idea that equality of opportunity can be maintained through political democracy alone has long been challenged by socialists and others, who insist that economic democracy through economic equality and public ownership of the major means of production is the only foundation upon which a true political democracy can be erected.

English settlers in America faced frontier conditions that emphasized the importance of the individual and helped in breaking down class distinctions and prejudices. These led to a democratic political structure marked by a high degree of individualism, civil liberty, and a government limited by law. In the 19th cent. emphasis was placed on broadening the franchise and improving the machinery for enabling the will of the people to be more fully and directly expressed.

Since the mid-20th cent. most political systems have described themselves as democracies, but many of them have not encouraged competing political parties and have not stressed individual rights and other elements typical of classic Western democracy. With the collapse of one-party Communist rule in Eastern Europe, the fall of authoritarian dictatorships in Latin America, and the end of some one-party states in sub-Saharan Africa, however, the number of true multiparty democracies has increased. Despite the increase in the number of countries holding multiparty elections, however, the United Nations issued a study in 2002 that stated that in more than half the world's nations the rights and freedoms of citizens are limited.

The poll is flawed, but since Bill has already apologized, I will not bother to point out that some of us do not vote the party line.

The irony is that Bill has often commented that people should vote for the actual candidate and issues rather than vote partisan (an opinion of which I fully agree), yet his poll does not give us that choice. But again, apology accepted and there is no need for me to rub it in.

The most shocking result of this poll (other than Bill's aforementioned glaring error, which we need not discuss since he has made amends) is how many people did not vote at all.

Americans have the right to not vote, but why would anyone excerise that right?

Oh and not all places you need an ID to vote, here in NY (at least in Western NY you don't). I just went down with my voter registration card and signed in and voted. I don't really like the idea about IDs, because people like Dotty who haven't had a chance to renew their IDs wouldn't be able to vote. BUT that's a subject that should be discussed in another thread.

Well, if you have only just discovered that George W. Bush is a Republican, then perhaps it's best that you didn't vote! I don't mean that in a critical way, Dotty, but if people really are apolitical and have no idea what they're voting for, then perhaps that is worse than not voting at all.

Will I didn't vote. so, you can't change that. IMportant? Yeah, To keep place I live. Yes, I had to plant the plants and trees the landlord got me to plant. but, it sure had nothing to do with that day. I just happen to do on that day. as kicking the tree. I think I will be thankful I have Shade next year. and I was just being honest about not voting. That problem why other keep there opinion to there self on how they vote. alot of you like to lecture people about it.

I wish that I had voted instead of doing the lawn. I have nice mark on my leg from the weed eater hitting my leg. Darn it hurts.

It doesn't sound like you were registered to vote anyway, so you wouldn't have been able to. Besides, excersizing your right as an American to vote is not near as important as lawn care.

So, in the next couple of years if your taxes get raised, you can go out and kick the tree you planted yesterday.

no, I had no ID.

You need to take the criticsm when you are honest, Dotty. I've learned that, and to be honest, I'm glad that people are more honest with me. A lot of people were scared to be honest with me because they were scared to hurt my feelings. Well, sometimes I need that honesty, even though it hurts and I don't like it.
Don't be upset if people like me criticize you. It doesn't me we don't like you as a person. Some people just don't take criticism that well, and I'm not just saying that to be flippant, I'm saying that from experience.

So I wake up and find we're going to have 2 recounts.

And to add to your misery, John, it looks like Montana will go to the Democrats with a lead of over 1% of the electorate there. Virginia still stands at 7,000 votes for the Democrat over the Republican. That's the one that may take up to 2 weeks to find out.

Here you have have ID.

I saw people showing their ID's but we were not asked.

Molly why are you being so critical about Dotty not voting? She has the right to not vote and since she lives here and is a citizen she has the right to complain.

BTW, I did not vote party lines with the exception of 2 offices. I could not stand the idea of voting for the Democrat for Governor nor could I vote for Ahhnie. Neither could my boyfriend.

Why am I getting picked on for saying that Dotty didn't have the right to complain, but a lot of people (including Bill) mentioned almost the same things I did. I don't think it's fair that I get pointed out like that. I'm sorry.

because people have the right not to vote as well as the right to vote, increasingly a lot of people are being effectively disenfranchasied by the main political parties in their countries. i am officially poor and there is no one for me in Britain and if i was in america there would have never been a party for me.

Over 60% of Californians voted for Arnold. I'd say that says something about his platform.

No it just says they were voting the lesser of two evils. Something I could not do because in my view there were no lesser of two evils.

Molly, I am not picking on you but you were the one that came across rather harsh in your criticism of Dotty not voting. Even though she did not vote she still can complain if she so chooses to. We do have that freedom, still.

Actually, I didn't think of molly being that harsh. and as for me complaining. I only complain about war. and nothing else. I never been much into politics or stuff like that. I can never keep up. However, I did think one person was being rather harsh. but, That is nor here or there. They can judge me all they want.but, in the morning I am still going to be the same old Dotty. and I think the way I been criticize on this thread I think I am taken it rather well. Thank You Cathy for defending me. but, I am ok.

Yes, Dotty you are. I don't like the fact that people complain about how the gov't is doing when they don't vote but we all, regardless if you vote, have that right. I just thought that Molly was being rather harsh in her criticising people who complain but don't vote.

Linda, we can only hope it stays that way. If not I am fully satisfied with all that has transpired in the past 24 hours. Very, very satisfying day and it's my mother's 80th birthday to boot. She is loving this.

In most states, including California, it is illegal to ask voters for identification. If you are registered in that precinct, your name should be on the roster. All that is legally required of you is to sign the roster. The California Supreme Court ruled several years ago that asking voters for identification is unconstitutional. Even if your local poll workers are untrained or uninformed (which often happens since it is so difficult to get poll workers), they cannot refuse your right to vote. That is illegal. You can actually call the police.

Even if you are registered in a different precinct, not even registered at all, or there is some other problem that might prevent you from voting, you can ask for a provisional ballot and they have to give you one. No poll worker can turn away any non-threatening voter for any reason. If any poll worker ever gives you a hard time, speak to the precinct inspector. Every precinct should have one. If the precinct inspector is unhelpful, call your county's board of elections or registrar recorder's office. All of the election mailers should have those contact numbers. There is no reason that any voter should be intimidated away from voting.

Most states have an 800 number that anyone can call 24 hours a day to find their poll location. If I am not mistaken, every state has that same information online. Every state spends a great deal of money to make sure that all of the information is easily available.

I have been a precinct inspector for the New York County Board of Elections since I was 18. Except on a few occasions when I have been out of the country, I have worked the polls in every federal, state, county and city election since then. I say this not for the pat on the back that I so richly deserve, but to show in some meager way that I am not simply talking out of my ass.

The only excuse to not vote is apathy.

Dotty, don't take this so personally. I don't hate you, just because I disagree with you on voting. You're not a bad person at all.
I'm sorry if I came out sounding harsh, I honestly didn't mean it.

What ever Bill. Friends also, think of your feelings too. And not one of you did.

Like I said, I only ever asked for numbers, not details. Nobody asked you to give the extra information. If you choose to give that information, you open yourself up to comment. It happens to everyone here. It doesn't mean we;re not friends, it means we're honest. Without honesty, there is no friendship.

I also stand by what I said, Dorothy. If you don't know exactly what you're voting for then it is perhaps best to not cast a vote rather than vote for something that you later discover to be something you disagree with. Some may argue that you should 'clue yourself up' and find out exactly what each candidate stands for, but that's unrealistic. Many people just aren't going to do that.

I'd much prefer people to not vote than just blindly vote or vote a certain way because that's what their parents do/did.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Motart, most people love complaining, but when they have the option to speak up they just would rather ignore it and go home.  They don't want to "stir the pot".

Tart? I will have you know I have not gotten any in days.

I saw 2 people pull out their wallets and show the precinct worker their ID.  I saw it with my own naked eyes.  I did hear of people in other states doing the same thing.

Did the poll workers ask to see some identification or did the voters volunteer? There are always some voters who show me ID and I always tell them that it is not required. Some even bring utility bills to show their address.

Does the glass house analogy really apply here? Or do the people who vote live in brick houses?

Indeed. This is only an exit poll.

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
Moz you live in New York. You can speak for New York, how can you begin to presume that you speak for the other 49 states in this country.
