What 14-17 year olds are doing: The drinking patterns of teenagers aged between 14 and 17: 78% have drunk alcohol at least once 45% drink less than weekly 28% drink weekly 0.4% drink daily By the time a teenager reaches 17: 95% will have consumed alcohol. 55% will have had a drink in the past week. How often do teenagers drink: 24.4% of girls drink weekly 31.2% of boys drink weekly 74.1% of girls report they are occasional drinkers 72.4% of boys report they are occasional drinkers 21% of teenagers say they have never had a full serve of alcohol. 12% of girls report drinking harmful levels of alcohol (more than 5 standard drinks on any one day). 10% of boys report drinking harmful levels of alcohol (more than 7 standard drinks on any one day). 8% of teenagers regularly consume alcohol at risky levels (between 29 and 42 drinks for adult males and between 15 and 28 drinks for adult females) 10% of females are more likely to consume risky levels of alcohol. 6% of males are more likely to consume risky levels of alcohol. Young people now start to drink at a younger age: In 2002, 63% of teens had their first drink at age 14. Only 9% of people over 65 had their first drink at 14. http://www.salvationarmy.org.au/alcohol/teenage.asp ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a teenager, I find some of these statistics very scary. I've seen a few friends of mine get completely and utterly wasted on more than one occasion - and I worry. At the same time, I do not want to become a hypocrite, I'm no stranger to Alchohol myself. But I have never been drunk and when I see people out every weekend getting off their face, well, its not good. It's an increasingly large issue, feel free to discuss. Just something to think about. |

If the figures you've given are for Australia Emilee it doesn't remove the fact that it is not a problem confined to Australia. There has certainly been a lot of comment on the same issues in the media in the UK to in recent months. I feel the same as you I think some of the statistics and the media reporting of alcohol consumption among teenagers (and adults) is quite scary. I don't know how people are going to be turned around. |

In the Uk Binge drinking has now become a very big problem. Many towns and Cities have become no-go areas late at night because of drunks, violence and general abuse. The pubs/bars encouraged this many years ago by removing most seats to encourage vertical drinking. This way people drink faster and spend faster. Our useless Government allowed 24 hour drinking last year against all advice, expecting to see people quietly drinking late at night like in European countries. The fact is the opposite. Hospital casualty wards are full of drunks until 5am.nurses and ambulance crews are assaulted and genuine law abiding people who need emergency treatment have to sit in terror. Now the government want to tax certain drinks! As if that will make any difference. |

As a college student I am well aware of the drinking issues in the U.S. I would estimate that almost 70 percent or higher of college students in the U.S. regularly drink. One of my high school friends has basically turned into an alcoholic since starting college and even had to be rushed to the ER once. The effects of alcohol really scare me. I did drink a little in Europe when I was there 2 summers ago, but I have yet to drink at all here at college. People just seem to go crazy with alcohol. I just don't get it... |

College students LOVE to drink because they think they're rebelling from their parents. They think you can't have a party without alcohol. When I was in college, I was baffled in the drinking. My roomie even told me that parties without drinking is a dull party. |
