I'm looking to build a new music system, something compact.

Ideally, I want something that plays everything including DVD-A, SACD and DivX.
However, the only player I've found that does the whole lot is $600 just for the player, plus amp and speakers. I'd really like something compact as space is at a premium. I'm looking at a couple of JVC models. They don't do SACD but I can live with that.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

How is your TV/DVD system and are you going to be updating/upgrading it in the near future? You can get some brilliant entertainment systems which combine everything - HiFi, TV, DVD etc - and you can save a packet rather than buying them all seperately. ^_^

It's probably what I'd do in the future, but my TV is relatively new. :)
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

TV is less of a priority to me and some time next year I might get an LCD screen. That's kind of why I want the stereo to play everything. I don't see the point in have 3 optical players where one could do everything.

I've also considered building the whole thing around a multimedia laptop, but I can't really justify the expence.

I'm going to audition three systems later this week. The assistants are going to have to earn their money. :D
