A sad day for ogoble

:( This weekend I took my vinyl lps & 45's to a record store in Birmingham. I had roughly 250 records that I had bought from the time I was a kid. Many were Paul albums of course. Many were imports & 12" singles.

I'm trying not to think about it.
 I have a huge cd collection now & rarely listen to the albums. They were like my babies for years, but I finally cut the apron strings and let them go. Now they can enjoy a new life.

They were a huge part of my life and could help tell the story of who I am.

They sat on my dining room table for the past 2 months. I tried to give them away to several people, but no one would come to my house to get them. My wife told me that they had to go before Thanksgiving, so I put them in our van. It was a lonely drive. The store gave me a check for $50 & store credit for $125. It's not anywhere close to their real value, but it's something.

RIP...old friends.

why? oh why?
why do people get rid of their albums?
I don't really mind, as I can buy them second-hand and cheap afterwards.
But still. Why?

I'd take an album collector any day! My husband collects Toys and Comic Books. both of which drive me nuts. I just can't see having boxes and boxes of toys that have never been opened, and the kids can't play with them. To me that is what toys are for :) He always tells me that this one or that one is worth this amount or that amount...and I tell him they aren't worth any more than he paid for them because he will never get rid of any of them!....lol. i love to bug him about them, aren't I terrible?

So sorry Olen. I still have all of mine, they are in boxes either at my mom's or here at home with me (where I have all The Beatles and solo lp's).

Sympathies Olen. They really are like your own kids. I still have all my vinyls - wouldn't catch me selling them!

Oh Olen, I'm gutted for you! I rarely pull mine out now, but it's good to know that I can.

Someone very dear to me once quoted her mother as saying that she realised she could either have a tidy shed or a happy husband, and she opted for the latter.
Fortunately for me, she feels the same way.
Put a puppet on it.

People should keep their album collections even when they have all of them on CD. Is it because you needed the money, Olen? I would NEVER sell my LPs.

:( I keep making excuses, but it don't ease the pain.
Some that I use are:
-My turntable was worn out.
-I need the space.
-I rarely listen to them.
-My wife wanted them out of the way.
-CD's take up less room.
-Someone else will now enjoy them.

:sweet: But, Im still sure I will really kick myself someday.

Awww Olen!! It's hard, I know. I'm so greatful that my parents kept all of their vinyl because now I have them to enjoy for myself and adding on to what was given to me. I adore vinyl and will never let any of it go!

I still have all of my vinyl and I can't part with them. I'm glad I live alone and no one can tell me what to do. No, my place is not tidy because of my Beatles and Paul collecting. As long as I have any say about them, they will be here. I don't have a turntable either. They were the first things I spent my babysitting money on and I can't part with them. My boyfriend gave me his vinyl. He was going to toss them and I couldn't let him do that. I found some Beatles in there, too. He said they must have belonged to his former wife. :P

Oggie - my vinyl condolences. Someone I work with is doing the same thing, and I am the lucky recipient. I love listening to old vinyl! You know, turntables are still available and pretty cheap. I have 2.

Olen I really sympathise I've never been able to part with a single record that I have ever bought. I still harbour a secret grudge against my brother for lending my copy of 'Help' to one of his mates who scratched it. <<<Grrr>>>

Oh Ogoble......I wish you'd posted this prior to getting rid of them. I know there are serious Collectors out there who would pay premium prices per album, providing they're in good shape. Some folks will pay a ransom just for the covers!

If ya find a few more still at home, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT go to the local "record store" to unload them. Contact Antigue Dealers, who will know who in town is a collector of what they call "Period Memorabilia". You'd be amazed at what sells for big $$$$$$$$. When I was growing up, we had this old key wind up metal Model T replica, that my Grandpa originally bought. At a Collectors mini-show at the local mall, I recently stumbled across it's exact twin for sale. Are you ready for this? For a whopping $5000.00 --- that's DOLLARS! :o :o :o We kids used to play with the thing! :o

:( It's too late. I know I must move on with my life & not look back. A few years back, I sold several rare Beatle records to a serious collector over $300. But, I held on to many that I loved.

Also about 3 years ago, I had many of my rare/hard-to-find records transferred onto cd. It cost me about $45 to do it. So...I still have the songs, just not the vinyl.

Well that's something, anyways. I just spent over $200.00 to get all my Fav. ABBA records on CD/DVD, so I could still hear, [and watch] them. A lot of money for me. But part of it went to a good cause: PBS.

LP wise yes. I had left them with my old roommates by accident when we both had moved. Their house ended up catching on fire and all my albums in the garage went with them. : (
