I recently got scammed this past week while bidding for tickets on ebay.

I lost the bid and then was emailed by someone I thought was an ebay member. They said they had tickets to Barbara Streisand at MSG for Oct. 9. I was buying them as a gift to clients of mine.

They wanted $300 for the pair. They wanted money wired to the UK.

I wired the $300 ten days ago, still no tickets and they don't respond to my emails now.

So I will post the info I got so that any of you who use ebay don't get scammed too.

This is the address to who I had to wire the money to.

Here are the email addresses to stay away from and blackball them all over the internet if you like.

ya know i googled the address and found that this address and these guys have scammed a bunch at ebay
apparantly they tried to sell jet skis for a few hundred. a porsche for 8000 and a jeep the same way

a shame you didnt google the address before you sent the wire

but it would never hurt to try
i would definitely let the money wiring company (western union or whatever) know that there is a scam here
also would notify ebay, who wont do anything but they like to know . dont know how they can control what happens off of the site though and that is understandable, sure does suck but something too good usually is too good

I'm not sure how this works in the UK but in the US I think you should make a police report. it is considered white collar crime and the FBI here will investigate it.
I would at least call them and ask if you are able to make a report. Here is a website you might want to look at in the UK http://www.bubl.ac.uk/link/f/fraud.htm
they investigate Internet Fraud, I think. I would also contact Google and Swiftmail and give them the email addresses that are being used.

Good Luck...let us know what happens.

Also, Nutty have you thought about reporting this person to eBay? If you have any issues reporting them, I know someone who works there and I can see if they can help out. Let me know.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I would like to ask our London friends if they know of that address on High Street.

I wonder if you can track down the email address to the IP number and where it originated from. Maybe it's in the US and they just made up the address in the UK.

I would definitely report them to eBay and to the authorities. I can tell you from experience that the authorities will tell you to report them to eBay. I'd also contact the ISPs.

I'm sorry, Nutty. Hope you closed the bank account if the transaction was done in a way that they can get more money from you.

Take a look here, Nutty. You are not alone.

In that page, they will tell you who he really is and how to deal with Western Union.

Unfortunately Beatnut that postcode does not exist as I looked it up for you on streetmap.co.uk and every town in the UK has a High Street even many villages. So that address is probably (thats if what I did was correct) false. Sorry you had this problem. Did you not have the option to pay via PayPal? (Sorry that is bad to ask now as time has now past?)

I didn't know it existed either, Nutty. I just know I would have been leery of a wire transfer.

Why did you think this person was an e-bay member? Even if they were, if this transaction was done outside of e-bay, it is not an official e-bay transaction and there is little to nothing e-bay can do about it. But then, you know that by now.

The benefit here is for others who might otherwise fall victim to a similar situation. Scam artists love e-bay. As soon as an auction is over there are plenty of willing victims who obviously want to buy something. You did not win that Rolex auction? No problem. I will sell you mine for a low, low $10,000. The sooner you write to them after the auction, the more likely they will buy into it.

Having an e-mail address is fairly meaningless. I would certainly contact the e-mail providers, but if this particular scam artist knows what he is doing, the addresses are either fictional or stolen from someone who is not involved.

The physical address is probably either nonexistant or a parking lot.

The good news in this case is that a wire transfer was made. That makes this wire fraud. In the United States that is punishable by up to $1 million and/or 20 years in prison. The FBI investigates wire fraud and can be contact online at http://www.ic3.gov/ or in person and by phone. For a list of local FBI offices http://www.fbi.gov/contact/fo/fo.htm. This could also go under the heading of internet fraud. Many states have been very willing to prosecute this lately.

The bad news is that anything under $400 is petty theft. Although it is still a felony, it is not a top priority for law enforcement. Odds are this person will get away with it, depending on how aggressive our Beatnut is in fighting this crime.

Well said, Moz8. Any transaction outside of eBay does not fall under eBay's rules. When I am selling or buying on eBay, I always check such second offers in My Messages, as opposed to my email. You wouldn't believe the messages I get that are supposed to come from eBay, but aren't. Another clue is that if they are really from eBay, they will have your name, as well as your user name.
