Flowers In The Dirt (1989); Album Discussion Thread
Topic Started: Sep 17 2006, 06:15 AM (230 Views)
Hey Jude

The next album in our album discussion series is the 1989 release, Flowers In The Dirt. Widely considered by the world at large to be Paul's "comeback" album, it showcased Paul's new songwriting partnership with Declan McManus a.k.a. Mr. Elvis Costello. It also saw Paul gather a talented group of musicians together who were alumni of bands such as The Pretenders (Robbie McIntosh) and The Average White Band (Hamish Stuart) as well as working with other lesser known but equally talented musicians, with whom he would subsequently and successfully tour the world, heralding a new golden age for Paul's career. So, without further ado, please fill in your answers to the questions posed and/or use this thread to discuss this very fine album.

1. When did you first hear Flowers In The Dirt? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. My Brave Face -
2. Rough Ride -
3. You Want Her Too -
4. Distractions -
5. We Got Married -
6. Put It There -
7. Figure Of Eight -
8. This One -
9. Don't Be Careless Love -
10. That Day Is Done -

1. When did you first hear Flowers In The Dirt? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I bought it in 1989, when I was ,er,35.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?
I actually hadn't bought a Macca album since Band on the Run in the early '70's.
I bought Flowers in the Dirt as I had tickets to see Paul at the NEC Birmingham in early 1990 and I wanted to bring myself up to speed with his current work.
I was totally blown away with his amazing music and the concert was a highlight of my life.
So, I still love this album and it brings back concert memories.

If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. My Brave Face -8
2. Rough Ride -7
3. You Want Her Too -7
4. Distractions -7
5. We Got Married -10
6. We Got There - Put it There ? 8
7. Figure Of Eight -7
8. This One -9
9. Don't Be Careless Love -7
10. That Day Is Done -7
11. How Many People -7
12. Motor Of Love -7
13. Ou Est Le Soleil -9

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

We Got Married is on of my very favourite songs.
The lyrics are so witty and apt.
"I love the things that happen when we start to discover who we are and what we're living for" and
"It's not just a loving machine, doesn't work out if you don't work at it" especially speak to me.
The music and instrumentation are blissful. Especially that saxophone bit - particularly played really loud!

Also, (sorry), Ou Est Le Soleil is an overlooked gem. Maybe the lyrics let it down, but the pounding beat and the sound effects like the saw and the bell make it another of my favourites.

My least favourite track I think is That Day is Done.
The funereal tempo is just too dirgey for my liking.

1. When did you first hear Flowers In The Dirt? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I bought Flowers In The Dirt on cassette in 1990 shortly after my Nanna bought me Tripping The Live Fantastic for my 15th birthday (which was the first solo Paul album I owned and may just have been the best birthday present I received as a teenager!) and I just had to own the studio versions of those live songs.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I thought it was awesome - absolutely brilliant... and I still do! There are one or two weaker moments, but on the whole it's a very strong album.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

6. Put It There - 8

11. How Many People - 8
12. Motor Of Love - 6
13. Ou Est Le Soleil - 7

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

My favourite track is probably My Brave Face, but any of the tracks I scored as '10' could also easily qualify - there are some fantastic songs on this album! My least favourite is Motor Of Love. It's a bit underwhelming and I don't like the chorus at all, unfortunately.

p.s.: Just noticed the 'Put It There' error... I lifted the track listing from amazon and, on first glance, it appeared OK but it evidently wasn't. Sorry - I've recified the original post. ;)

Andy - I did a critique of this album, but after I re-read it, I didn't like what I said, so I erased it. I just love the man too much to play critic and judge his work. Sorry.

Perhaps, I'll try again later, if I can figure out a better way of expressing myself in a way I like. We'll see...

("McCartney standard" responses.)

1. When did you first hear Flowers In The Dirt? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

Day of release/Yes/20's.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I loved Distractions. But, I must say that I'm always disappointed when/if Paul collaborates with someone else, no matter how great the other person may be, or how much they help to enhance the effort. Artists should always paint alone, and this goes for Paul McCartney when it comes to composing music.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

12. Motor Of Love - 9
13. Ou Est Le Soleil - 4

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

Fave is Distractions. I feel it's one of McCartney's best and under-rated songs. Perfect. Least fave is ...Soleil. I don't like One World Music, although, it does show Paul can do anything - well, of course.

Many thanks! ^_^

1. When did you first hear Flowers In The Dirt? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

This was a gift from my girlfriend - soon to be my wife - for my 22nd birthday. Paul seems to release quite a few albums near my birthday. She bought the CD the day it was released. This was my first Paul album on CD. A month later I had a college degree and no idea what to do with it, but at least I had this to listen to.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I loved it immediately. How could anyone not? It's one of those timeless albums that hold up well no matter how many years pass.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. My Brave Face - 10
2. Rough Ride - 8

12. Motor Of Love - 9
13. Ou Est Le Soleil - 7

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

This is hard. My Brave Face and Distraction are great in their own ways, but not long after We Got Married, my girlfriend and I got married, so I'll pick that one. Picking a least favorite is easier. Ou Est Le Soliel can be taken right out and it wouldn't really be missed.

Many thanks! ^_^

Many welcomes.
With great power comes great responsibility. With great age....

1. When did you first hear Flowers In The Dirt? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I bought it in 1990 in February because I watch a video from a guy named Paul McCartney and I liked it. The video was "My Brave Face". I couldn't find it anywhere! I bought it with my savings and a couple of $ from my mother. I remember it costed me A14.300 (that was in "Australes", our currency on those old days, in pesos now it would be $14.30). I bought the cassette.

I was 14 years old.

In less words, this was my very first Paul album.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I really liked it. I used to put it loud when I was getting ready for the school. 6:30 AM... :blush:

My fav fav fav is My Brave Face. This was the song that entered me to the Macca's world.
The others favs are This One, Figure Of Eight and How Many People.
Less fav: We Got Married.

Flowers in the Dirt

1. When did you first hear Flowers In The Dirt? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

1989 (I was 28 years old)

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Even though I mildly liked the album, I was disappointed. I was wanting to hear something that I knew would put Paul back at the top of the charts...I didn't hear anything that would do that. I also didn't like the co-penned Costello songs.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. My Brave Face - 6
2. Rough Ride - 4
3. You Want Her Too - 3
4. Distractions - 8
5. We Got Married - 3
6. Put It There - 4
7. Figure Of Eight - 5
8. This One - 5
9. Don't Be Careless Love - 2
10. That Day Is Done - 3
11. How Many People - 3
12. Motor Of Love - 3
13. Ou Est Le Soleil - 8

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

My favorite was "Ou Est Le Soleil." I loved the beat and Paul's suave vocals. "Distractions" ranked a close second. Very romantic...
Least favorite would be "Don't Be Careless Love." Nice lyrics, but very bland musically.
