A live cane toad has been found in Western Australia's Kimberley region.

WA Environment Minister Mark McGowan says a Kununurra couple found the 10-centimetre male toad near the town's caravan park on Thursday night.

They took it to a local vet who destroyed it.

Mr McGowan says the discovery of the toad does not mean the amphibians have begun invading WA.

"We're very confident that this toad hitched a ride across the border and we're very grateful that people were on the lookout and were able to catch it and destroy it," he said.

"This is a big threat to our state's ecology, they have a dramatic effect on local fauna."

He says surveillance and control measures are continuing in the Victoria River District of the Northern Territory to prevent toads coming to WA.

Couldn't they have simply deported it? Is that how you deal with your immigration problems 'down under'? ^_^
