Thanks, JayJay. Ya know, sometimes I swear this "waiting game" is made up by one group of Drs. just to send more work over to their Shrink colleagues!  I don't know yet when my MRI is. Our medical system is in such shambles now even a case marked "URGENT," which mine is, could wait at least a month before even getting a date !!! Lord, they even make cancer patients wait!    I'm keeping my fingers, [among other limbs  ], crossed for Amber's MRI results. |

It's amazing but true... The nurse acted really surprised that Amber only waited a month. Like that's not long enough... She says to me something like, 'I wonder how they got her in so fast, I know right now they're taking appointments for NEXT YEAR!' I think the reason for that is the sedation part. She's only 6 so they have to sedate her. Hopefully you won't have to wait that long! It's absurd! Especially when you've been on antibiotics for months. Hope they get you in fast so you can get some answers. |

Janet and Laura: Ye gods, good luck to you both all around. I hope for the best for Amber; I'm glad my little story a while back was heartening, it can be true that the young can recover with little incident from seemingly large things. Laura, wow, please take care of yourself and I hope that the scan is soon and the results you get prove not be so serious. And everyone, get a flu shot, while I'm thinking about it! |

Laura and JayJay, I have to echo what Lisa is saying. I haven't had any health problems to speak of but my boyfriend has gone through it all 52 yrs of his life. He was born with a kidney attached outside of his body so he very well knows what the system is like. He has so many other health issues that it is incredible that he has made this far, he was supposed to not make it past the age of 18. |

WHOA! My long-lost Brother?! Sorry, couldn't help meself. They told my Mom not to expect me to live past age 12!
While I don't like revealing me age, I can tell ya I'm looooooooooooooooooong past that age! [somewhere between then & your boyfriend's age--a leetle closer to his than I care to admit!
] We'z in good company tho: they told Orson Welles' Mom the same exact thing---look how long he lived! [his less-than-perfect health was a life-long secret, as he correctly realized Hollywood/Society will forgive drugs, mayhem, even murder, [look at O.J.], but will NOT tolerate poor health. So he let the rumour that he was too fond of alcohol stay circulating. It was more "acceptable" than the truth. Go figure. He was my role-model for "soldiering on" . |

I hope Amber's scan today goes well. I just got my "date" for the MRI. Unless cancelled, it's this Friday, 20th @ 11:45. My Specialist told them the original one offered for late Nov. was waaay too long a wait. He must have some pull there: this is the 2nd time he's successfully moved a scan closer. Gotta go..... [in more ways than one! ]

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. Amber got her MRI yesterday. It was a LONG day, but at least that part is over for now. Now we have yet another week before we can get in to see the surgeon again to make a determination of whether the spinal cord surgery is necessary or not. It's pure torture to wait... When we got home she was soooo drugged out... it took about 6 hours before she could even walk. And the way she was talking she sounded like a 6-year old drunk. |

I agree your Dr. must have pulled some strings to get you in. Good luck tomorrow... Please let us know how it goes. At least you won't need sedation... the way my daughter was, you might want to request it!

Laura, I was thinking about you today... Hoping your MRI went well. Please let us know when you get some info, OK? I'm worried about ya... Amber today has been diagnosed with urinary track infection #5. They've put her back on Cipro because they're afraid the Furadantin will stop working if she continues to take it. She's allergic to penicillin, so her options are limited as it is. Please let me know how you're feeling, Laura. |

Well, it's done. [biiiiiiiig sigh of relief]. Wanna know something funny? I arrived on time, and then promptly got lost!!! This frickin' hospital is sooooo large, and has got more back hallways than Carter has liver pills!!! Rather embarrassing really. Here I am, a Hosp. Veteran, who should know her way around blindfolded, I've been there sooooo many times. Must've been nerves.Anyways, they found me, [and it was that way around! ], & did the test. A grand total of just over 5 mins. to do the actual thing. Almost a let-down! After I toyed with the idea of going to the Mall, then decided, I was too worn out getting lost. So I "splurged" in the Gift Shop. Probably just as well: I'd already gone to the bathroom 3 times just at the Hospital!   Hope Amber feels herself by tomorrow. Gotta go.....AGAIN !!!!!     |

Hey there... Amber's feeling ok... Actually, this is the first UTI that she's had where she actually HAD THE SYMPTOMS! Not that it's a good thing, but at least it makes sense. :hmm: She was screaming unbelievably every time she had to pee and was doing everything she could to hold it in, which is the worst thing to do. But she's had a couple of doses of Cipro in her now and is feeling some relief. Laura - did you do an MRI or an ultrasound? Sounds like an ultrasound... That's what they did to Amber after her 2nd UTI to see her kidney and bladder funtion. Thank goodness they were ok.... but that was 3 infections ago. Her MRI took over an hour; I was getting paranoid and my mind starting thinking horrible thoughts like.... are they unable to wake her up! So, when will you see the specialist again to get your results? How are you feeling??? |

Actually, either I wrote it down wrong, or they told me wrong, but it ended up being a C.A.T. Scan. [Ergo why I got lost at the Hosp. on Friday.  ]. Which is what I had before. Now the waiting game begins for results. I rarely have the so-called "classic symptoms" either. Except the goingallthetime one. I could do without that. I'm sooooo sleep-deprived! I have had on occasion that terrible burning when going--tell Amber I sympathize. When I was her age, [& had kidney/urinary infections constantly], I got the burning more then. And I was just like her. [Poor kid]. Either that, or I couldn't go at all. Those were not fun times at all. ....I feel about the same as I've felt the past 2-3 weeks: icky. Everytime I go, I get internal lower-tummy/right-side pain. Like something inside goes spastic everytime I go. It hurts. And as I'm still going approx. every 2 1/2 hours I'm getting it---alot. |

Yeah, Mom isn't doing so well, but Amber's feeling better with 3 days of Cipro in her. Tomorrow is our appointment with the surgeon... FINALLY!!! I'm SO ANXIOUS to hear what the MRI results are. If she needs surgery (which he BETTER tell me one way or the other tomorrow because the anxiety of waiting for an answer is making me physically sick!) then we'll find out when that will be tomorrow. Tomorrow is a HUGE day!!! Laura, when will you get your results??? Are you seeing a Urologist? I wonder if that pain you're feeling is your bladder? Or kidney??? I'm so sorry you're going through this too.

What I really need now is thoughts and prayers from all my friends...
The Neurosurgeon confirmed today that she does need spinal cord surgery, and we have it scheduled for Tuesday... Which is Halloween. I just hope they can get the authorization and pre-op work done by then. Big concern is that he says there's no guarantees that the surgery is going to cure the UTI's because we don't know for sure whether those are happening because of the tethered cord now, or from the effects of her previous surgery when she was 5 months old. If it's due to the last surgery, then this one could make it worse.
The reason for the new problem is scar tissue from the initial surgery in 2001, so there's nothing really to stop this from happening again. Although it's not likely, he says he's heard of cases where people have had this surgery 4-5 times due to scar tissue re-attaching after previous surgeries.
I've gone through so many different emotions, right now I'm just p*ssed off that my poor baby has gone through so much in her short little life. Please keep my baby in your thoughts my friends. She is such a sweetie. |

Sooooo sorry to hear this, (((((JayJay))))). You know those who say knowing is always is better? CRAP!!!! Well, that's what I say, anyways. Especially when the news is like this.Scar tissue can be tricky alright. 15 yrs. ago my Mom was rushed to hospital by ambulance when she suddenly [very suddenly], became desperately ill. Emergency Surgery, [seems to run in the family! ], proved what had gone wrong was scar tissue from a previous surgery--25 years before! And I have to deal with scar tissue on a daily basis pain-wise, from the so many surgeries I've had. One in particular is especially aggravating: repeated scar tissue build up from surgeries to my left hip--at least 2 of which as a result of that impaired driver hitting me. Problem is if they go in to "fix it" it will again cause yet more of same. Sigh.... So I REALLY CAN relate to your daughter's situation. Poor thing. I'm still waiting on my results. Symptoms remain the same. And yes I have a urologist--what I refer to as me "kidney Dr." I've had several since I've had that trouble since Amber's age. As a matter of fact I've had a whole team of Drs. since then, for my various & chronic health woes. I like to joke that if I ever recover, they'll all go broke! |

Oh JayJay, I am so sorry to hear your news. I had hoped the Amber would have been able avoid surgery.
Let's hope this is the last one! and hope that her UTI's become a thing of the past. I don't blame you for being P-ssed off! It's crummy when kids have to go through this. My son had major surgery at 18 - 5 days after his graduation - because he had a spinal issue. He has steel rods on both sides of his column all the way down. It really made me mad too. You begin to wonder why MY kid????? You will all be in my thoughts and prayers! (Hope you get better news Laura!) |

Well, they called me this morning with the scan results. It is an infection. [something they call "Pseudomonas", you Nurses out there, wanna fill me in?]. And that little piece of connecting tube from the left kidney they couldn't get at when they removed that kidney, IS infected as well. BIG SIGH. I see my Specialist---get this---at 8:30 Monday morning. During this weekend, if start feeling sick, or develop a fever, I'm supposed to go to the Emergency. They're gonna try drug therapy first. Worst case scenerio is they have to go back in to remove that pesky little "left-over". They still could throw me in hospital next week, as the only drug they can give me is only given via I.V. Phooey. If they do, I'll say it now: Good luck to Amber on her surgery. Gotta go, my Home Support Worker is here. |

OH MY GOD!!!! LAURA!!! My heart is pounding...!!!That's the bacteria that Amber got that put her in the hospital when this thread was started!!! I am VERY familiar with pseudonomas!!! OK, so she got infection #1 which was eccolli (sp?) Then the second one the day after the antibiotic finished was something which I cannot remember the name. #3 was pseudonomas, and as soon as the pediatrician got the urine results and found out it was that, I got a phone call telling me to take her to the hospital. They said that they couldn't treat a child with pseudonomas without an infectious disease specialist, and that the initial antibiotic required wasn't available in oral form... therefore, admit to the hospital for IV. We ended up there for 5 days! Just to finish the story (and this is a summary of this whole thread) infection #4 came right after she finished the Cipro, which is what she got after she left the hospital and that one was the same as #2. Now she's got #5 but the culture came back contaminated so we never did retest because the surgery is scheduled. Jeez, what are you taking for it??? Cipro??? PLEASE keep us updated, OK? Maybe I'll pm you.... On another note, they have confirmed surgery for Tuesday, so we're on. I'm a complete mess, but trying to be strong in front of her. I'm so worried my stomach is in knots and I feel like I'm going to puke... Thanks so much Theresa, Diane, Beatlebarb and Rose for your thoughts and prayers... You guys don't realize how much it means to me. |

JayJay: I hope for the very best for you and Amber. This has to be so terrifying for you to go through; I have a little girl who is 5 so I feel for you deeply. She's so sweet and Amber sure seems to be just to look at her photo. I'm praying for the best possible outcome of the surgery for your family and Amber. Laura: I also hope they take care of that infection right away! I'm glad they found it and I hope that medication will deal with it...and if you do go to the hospital hope it's not for too long. Best of luck. Here's a little something on pseudomonas infection: Pseudomonas infections can develop in many anatomic locations, including skin, subcutaneous tissue, bone, ears, eyes, urinary tract, and heart valves. The site varies with the portal of entry, and the patient's particular vulnerability. Pseudomonas is a common cause of urinary tract infections and usually is seen in patients who have had urologic manipulation or have obstructive uropathy. Causes and Risk Factors of Pseudomonas Infections The most serious infections occur in debilitated patients with diminished resistance resulting from other disease or therapy. Pseudomonas infections occur most often in hospitals, where the organism is frequently found in moist areas such as sinks, antiseptic solutions, and urine receptacles. Cross infection transmitted from patient to patient via the hands of personnel may occur in outbreaks of urinary tract infections, on burn units and in neonatal intensive care nurseries. Treatment of Pseudomonas Infections When parenteral therapy is required, 5 mg/kg/day in divided doses of the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin or gentamicin inhibits most Pseudomonas. Other antibiotics used include amikacin, tobramycin and gentamicin. Several penicillins, including carbenicillin, ticarcillin, piperacillin, mezlocillin, and azlocillin, are active against Pseudomonas. Specific choice of antibiotic must be based upon the history of pseudomonas sensitivity to the particular drug in the community and, if the organism is cultured, its specific sensitivity. Questions To Ask Your Doctor About Pseudomonas Infections What is the probable cause of infection? Why is this a threat? Where is the site of the infection? What are treatment options? Which antibiotics will you use and what are the side effects? Will this cure the infection? |

Thanks, Jacaranda. I've had Gentimcin before, and they're thinking about using it this time around. I'm allergic to all Sulfa-based drugs, so they can't give anything with that in it. One thing's for sure. If this constant running to the bathroom every 2--2 1/2 hrs., doesn't slow down soon, I'll be in hospital from pure exhaustion! I'm sooooo tired! Speaking of which, 3 guesses what I have to do-----right now!!!

And suddenly, without making a sound, tears started flowing down her little cheeks. Her next comment, 'it's not fair' quite calmly. My answer: you're right sweetie, it's not. I'm afraid not... It didn't occur to me untiil later that Tuesday is Halloween.. Not that it would have made a difference because it is what it is... but she missed her 6th birthday, the day she was admitted to the hospital for the 3rd UTI, and now Halloween. I have arranged with all my wonderful neighbors that I will take her down the block tomorrow night so she can dress up. And another neighbor came over tonight with all kiinds of goodies to bring to the hospital: turkey and stuffing, deviled eggs, potato salad, sodas, fresh sandwich rolls, cookies and chips. I have WONDERFUL neighbors and friends. And one of the other neighbors brought her over a bag of candy today, so she's being spoiled rotten. Her bahavior has been horrible the last couple of days, but I suppose she's got a lot on her mind as well. She's a little human being who's probably scared to death. I took her to church with me today and had her blessed by the priest, and he also said a healing prayer over her. I'm doing everything I can think of. :hmm: |

Yes! He did... I put her on my shoulders and she held it up high, and he looked over at us and pointed at it. From there, the whole night went downhill. It started pouring and both kids were miserable the whole night. I had a good idea to bring bubbles to keep them both occupied, and it definately would have gotten Ringo's attention, but I forgot them, and left them in the hotel room. Would have made for a much better night. Janet and Laura: I'm glad I could be of service with my little research on the rather disturbing topic.
Anytime either of you need medical research on anything just ask, it's what I did for a living for years. Laura, I'm still hoping for the best for you and that the doctors get rid of that DUMB infection! Janet: I've got everything crossed for Amber and I'm sorry she's missing Halloween -- I know how much that means to a six-year-old. Glad that your friends are making up for it as much as they can. I would suggest that you dress up in a funny costume when you go to the hospital Tuesday, and get her a clown nose or some fun hat or silly wig to wear to help cheer her up. oh and by the way: Happy Halloween Amber!

Hopefully, soon, this will all be a distant (bad) memory.....................I read thru all of the posts from the beginning and I have a suggestion to maybe help Amber after she's past her surgery. Have you tried getting her to drink cranberry juice????? I know, it doesn't sound like much (compared to those "big-gun" antibiotics), but I really believe in prevention when it comes to illnesses...................there have been studies that prove that there's something in cranberries that prevent bacteria from clinging to the walls of the bladder, thus circumventing those nasty UTI's........obviously, your little one suffers from such a small bladder, but I feel there's no harm in trying something so simple and you may get some success??? Something for you to think about after you get past her operation...............you'll be in my thoughts
|
| And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong, I'm right.......Where I belong I'm right..........Where I belong. | |

I have heard that about cranberry juice. They've been telling me water.... lots and lots of water... and then more water. My pediatrian has reservations about drinking juices however, this is a unique situation. Thanks for the advice, and keeping Amber in your thoughts and for taking the time to read through the thread. :-) |

Thanks jacaranda. I just showed Amber your greetings and the picture. It put a huge smile on her face. I told her even people all over the world are thinking and praying for her and she's now trying to figure out how you all know can possibly know. I think she got more candy from the 5 houses we went to than if she had gone all night!!!

Laura how are you doing??? Did you go to the specialist today??? Hope you're not sitting in the hospital, and just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well. Take care of yourself and please let us know how you're doing. We have to be at the hospital at 6am so I gotta get up at 4:30. It's going to be a L-O-N-G day. I am going to try to get online at the hospital but dunno if that will work. I'll try to give an update when I come home tomorrow night. We take shifts so my hubby or my Dad will stay at the hosp. overnight so I can sleep and get back the next morning to speak with the doctors. Thanks to all of you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. |

I'zzz here. [ SURPRISE!]Seriously, I was too tired to visit here by the time I came home yesterday. And I'm still tired. The Dr. basically talked to me & then booked a Cystoscopy at the Hospital in 2 weeks. Unless I get a temp., and/or start feeling sick, essentially, I'm in a holding pattern. I'm beginning to understand [the airline] Pilots' frustration when they're put likewise!  Up here our so-called medical system is in total shambles, and unless you're literally going to die if not admitted, they put off hospitalization as long as possible. Or should I say as long as they can get away with. The Drs. here have next to no influence anymore, and they certainly have lost having the final word regarding their patients. They, [the Gov't], have even insisted on hospitals adopting co-ed rooms for the patients, rather than open one more room, to "save costs". I don't know about you guys, but I HATED waking up after my kidney surgery, to find I'd been moved from the all-girls 4-bed room, to a co-ed room, with a guy right next to me. A very nosey guy too. Hmmmph! I spent most of the time worried he was watching me thru the very thin bed curtains! [& no, he most definitely was NOT remotely appealing, physically, or personality; tho he thought so. And he was a royal pain in the butt to all the Nurses. When you're sick you shouldn't have to also worry about the patient next to you.]. In short BC has become like the mess south of our border regarding health care. So sad. We used to be admired for our system not so long ago. I hope everything goes as well as possible for little Amber today.

Just seeing this. I hope Amber came through with flying colors. It is hard to see your child sick but to see their little bodies in a big hospital in bed makes it all the worse. Hope they find the right solution and that she lives a long and fruitful life. Laura, you are right your medical insurance was much admired here in the States. Now that it is almost as bad as ours, makes one feel that there is little hope in the patient being able to trust that their life's needs can be met. Nowadays you have to go through hell because of all of the regulations. I have seen what hoops my boyfriend has to go through with Medicare and it ain't easy. I hope all goes well with you. |

Hi everyone! Finally back home for tonight, will go back to the hospital in the am, but thought I'd give an update: Surgery was just over 4 hours... Dr. Morrison cut an incision down her lower back about 6" long. When he got in, there was a tethered spinal cord indeed attached to scar tissue. He released the cord, cut out more of the lipoma from infancy and some scar tissue (all that he could), and also carterized the scar tissue in hopes that this wouldn't happen again. He said that there are 10 nerve endings involved where he cut; 2 of which also involve the feet and legs, but the other 8 are for urine/bowel control They put some type of charge to each nerve ending to determine whether or not they are funcitoning. The 2 to the legs and feet were functioning fine!!!! That was my biggest worry... Out of the other 8, all are functioning fine except one. This was already the case prior to surgery. He says that it could very well heal itself, but may not, however, if it doesn't, he doesn't think it will cause her to be incontinent, although she may continue to have urinary issues. Obviously, we're hoping it heals. Amber has been incredibly brave the entire time. Prior to surgery, her main concern was that she was going to wake up in the middle of it. Then when it was over and she started coming out of it, she kept asking when it was going to be done. Even on morphine, she's questioning EVERYTHING! She wants to know how big the cut is, how they cut it, why she has an IV, what's in the IV, how big is the tube for her urine, why does she have a tube for her urine, why does she have to turn every 2 hours, when can she come home, why she has to stay in the hospital, and every other question you can think of. She's now flat for 48 hours, can't even lift her head. They turn her every two hours from side to side. Tomorrow evening the 48 hours will be up, and they'll lift the head of the bed a little bit and let her eat sitting up. By Friday she should be getting out of bed and hopefully by Saturday she'll get to come home. I'm SOOOOOOOOOOO relieved that it's over. I was a complete basket case for months. It was one of the most joyful moments of my life when she resonded to the doctor's request to move her toes. Thank the good Lord - he is good! (((Laura))) good to see you here - I was hoping you weren't locked up in a hospital room as well. You mention the coed rooms - that's crazy! I always thought you guys had the best of healthcare; sounds like the US. We have the pleasure of sharing a room with a little girl (age 3) with her Mom, neither of which speak English. And for some heaven only knows reason, wakes her child up at 1:30am for 'playtime.' There's something bad wrong with the child, she doesn't speak, however, she's in a crib and from 1:30am until about 5am, she sat in her crib and shook it and shook it and shook it. Woke Amber up all night and she even said 'tell her to stop it please!' I asked to be moved but never did. OK, enough rambling for me.... I gotta get some rest for another long day tomorrow. Thanks everyone for asking about my princess.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO GLAD Amber sailed thru. [more or less].
My Mom says I was a little chatterbox regarding questions at Amber's age too! Only 'cause of the after-effects of anaesthetic, they came out sounding more to her like commands! So I got temp. nickname of Little General.   [I was just trying to conserve strength--really!].I sooooo know what Amber's going thru right now. At her age, I was more in, than out of the hospital. If she has any questions answered from a fellow Vet's point of view, tell her to feel free to ask you to ask me. One thing that helped me get thru, was my Mom would always buy a stuffed animal immediately post-surgery. It would be the first thing, [aside from her], I saw when I woke up. It always became my new-best-friend. I would talk to it, cry to it, pour my whole heart out regarding what was going on. And it also gave me something good to look forward to while enduring that grueling nite before surgery. [which is why my Mom always gave it post-op. To help distract me from what was coming by wondering what it would be]. That little room-mate sounds like maybe her Mom is insisting on keeping on the same "clock" as back home--home being in another time-zone. Maybe they're only here for the surgery that can't be got back home. Keeping a child to their routine in frightening circumstances can really be a comfort for the child. Ask the Nurse if this is so. Then ask if Amber can be moved--to keep her in her time-zone routine! Yeah, it's been hell watching what was once a truly world-wide admired Medical System go down the tubes. And mostly because of the Premier we've had in BC for the past 8 or so years.   He's also brutally slashed funds for women in dire circumstances. Forcing several Transition, and plain hiding-houses for Battered women, to close. He cut medical funding for the care of the seriously mentally ill, resulting in their roaming the streets unmedicated. My older Bro's office co-worker was murdered by her own son, some years ago, as a direct result of this. She tried, and tried and tried to get them to fund his meds, [which she couldn't due to cost], or get him back in Hospital---but always got told she was over-reacting,and besides there were no beds available. Suddenly there were beds "available"--after he'd run a sword thru her, and tried to also kill her male friend,[who tried to stop him]. I lost another good friend that same summer, when again due to lack of funds, the hospital "released" him just a week after having suffered a serious heart incident. On a Friday of a long-weekend, telling him to call a specialist's # for a appointment the following Tuesday. He never even made it to Sat. My Bro, [yes the same one], found him, dead, Sunday, after Gary had been missing since late Friday. It was one hell of a bad summer that year. And nothing's gotten better re the System since. UPDATE---my Specialist's office called & told me he's booked another test---3 days after the Cystoscopy. Wonder if they're trying to kill me off........... :lol:PS: it mite be because the current choices of Cranberry Juice are so diluted and loaded with sugar, is why your Dr. is nixing it. There IS a new line called "Ocean's Spray 100% Juice Cranberry Juice". No sugar added. It's somewhat tarter in taste, but better than those cocktail blends. That's what my Dr. recommended. |

Thank you for the update JayJay. Your little Amber sounds like a real firecracker! So glad everything went so well and hopefully she heals just the way she should. When my oldest was 5, he had a very rare disease and was hospitalized for some time. Because he had so many questions and was having so much done to him, I remember buying him a Kermit the frog and a doctor kit, which he used on Kermit! My son will be 30 this year and still has beloved, but very much "worked on" Kermit! I hope you get some rest and I wish a speedy recovery to Amber. |

Janet: Thanks for sharing the good news about Amber with us. I'm hoping for a speedy recovery and no complications, and of course whatever will be the very best outcome. I like Laura's suggestion about a nice stuffed animal. I totally believe in spoiling kids when they deserve lots of attention and spoiling.
Laura: Sorry to hear about the holding pattern and horrified to hear about the BC medical system. I hope that they do well or at least okay by you and that the cytoscopy results are good. Also that you DON'T have any fever or pain before you see the doc again! Hoping for the best for you too. |

Yay, I went to the nurse's station and got a cable so I can be online while sitting in this boring hospital room!!! This is 10,000x better! Amber gets total control of the tv, and I'm SO tired of watching Dora, Spongebob and all of those other God-forsaken Nick shows. And I do not enjoy reading so I'm going  She's doing well.... thanks to every single one of you who have kept us in your thoughts.
Today I think they are going to get her out of bed... She's scared, but also anxious to go home, and this is another step in that direction. She had a very very small bowel movement yesterday, but she didn't feel it.
Although I understand it's pretty typical at this point, it's still worrying me. They're also going to take the cathedar out today, so lots of things going on here. I hope everyone is having a good Friday! |

I hope Amber will now be able to just go be a normal 6-year old girl, instead of having to worry about medical issues. Some things in life just aren't fair, but I know she'll get through it with you to lean on. I'll be back around here on Sunday. . . off to work. . . I'm already late!!! Once again, thanks to all of you for your thoughts and well wishes. You all don't realize how much your support helps.... We've had a little bit of a setback. She was supposed to get out of bed yesterday, but couldn't. They got her in an upright position, however, it was only momentarily and she was in such pain that they put her back down on her side. We had a talk with her and hopefully she'll be able to get up today and into a wheelchair (I think it's quite too soon to expect her to walk today) and get her to the playroom. A little incentive for her... but we're not leaving today; hopefully tomorrow but I am having doubts. Not sure it's appropriate, but we took pictures of her back. I could post here but don't want to make anyone queezy or sick... it's just a big cut but gives an idea of what she's going through... |

As I sent that last reply, a partner of the surgeon just walked in... They're going to give her one dose of morphine to help her get out of bed... that's good! She hasn't had anything but tylenol since Thurs. Hopefully this will provide enough comfort to accomplish today's objective... Wish that morphine came in a 6-pack for Mom & Dad to get through this!!! |

The leakage stopped - much progress since then! She got up and WALKED TODAY!!!!!! They've taken the catedar out and she's been pooping ALL DAY LONG... first time in a week! she's feeling it but she doesn't have much control. She hasn't pee'd yet on her own all day. The urologist said that after surger her nerves would go into shock and this may happen, but it sounds like she may come home tomorrow and they're trying to teach me how to catederise her!
The nurse can't do it without help, what makes them think I can do this???? We may end up with a nurse to come to the house a few times a day to do thi sfor us. In the meantime, all is well.... A new neighbor in our room... who tried to OD on an antidepressant... poor thing. Just a little girl wiht so many problems at such an early age. How are you LAURA?????? I'm still alive--I think! Still in a holding pattern. I have to wait another week, [baring the emergence of either/or a fever, loss of appetite, nausea, or--God forbid--all three! If this keeps on for much longer, this "plane's" gonna run outta fuel!!! I've finally figured out why the pain factor remains tolerable, [so far anyways]: being on Tylonal 3's regularly already for my other, & constant, bone & muscle pain, probably numbed the pain-alerts for this problem to the point my brain shrugged it off. You know, Brain: "GO 'way, I'm busy tending to your other stuff. Come back when ya really got somethin to say!"   I've been too tired from not being able to sleep very well at all due to this constant running to the biffy, [plus the other pain the Tylonal 3's only just touch]. So I'm not checking in at Paul sites as often. I'm saying this so if you don't hear from me for a week or so, not to worry too much. On the other hand, if ya don't hear from me for over a month: WORRY! [ ]Amber is such a BRAVE little girl!
Tell her that's from a Vet too!
Hug her for me every day please?Ps: I've posted a pic of my childhood, and--except for Paul--all-time hero, Guy Williams, who was Disney's original TV Zorro; 'cause I always "turn" to him when I feel the need for a little "extra support". [Like right now ], Works every time! Ahhhhh yes! There's nothin' like Zorro comin' to your rescue!

Thanks all for your posts and especially not forgetting us. We are STILL sitting here in the hospital... day 9! Neurologically speaking, her wound is doing great. She's walking fine and being real trooper in that respect, however, she has not been able to pass urine on her own. They expected that for a day or two possibly, but not this long. They planned to send us home with the hubby and I doing it, however, she was so traumatized by the horrible nurses in a different hospital last month that we absolutely cannot do it. We've both learned how and it's not that difficult, but she HAS to cooperate and relax and that's simply not happeneing. We've had psychology in here, child life specialists (who have been absolutely wonderful and my best friends) and she even got to do two cathedars with a therapy dog in bed with her! She handles it better when the nurses do it, and even Dad, but in her mind, Mom is off limits.
So..... I think Dad is taking a couple of days off to stay with her (in the hosp or at home, whatever) and I'm going to go to work for a couple of days... I'm using up ALL my vacation time.
OK, time for a cathedar for her... (((beep))) I showed Amber your flowers and she put on a huge smile... however, she was much more interested in your cat avatar... she giggled and said 'the cat sent me flowers?' Thank you for that adorable moment. And thanks dorothy, marthamydear, jacaranda, theresa, beatlechick and Laura I hope the week passes quickly for you and I'm glad you're not experiencing much pain. |

Don't be silly, cats can't send flowers! It was Grover. I'm glad it brought a smile to her face, and your reply brought one to mine. (Plus a little lump in my throat.) |

Awwwwww....poor Amber.
Do I UNDERSTAND !!! I had to deal with that not being able to go & that HORRID catheter thing at her age
YUCK!!! Them & needles were my bogiemen back then. Actually, I still hate 'em--so I'm NOT looking forward to next week. As both tests require the use of 'em. I wish I could buy her a stuffed toy for her to positively crush, when it's time for one.

They told my Mom not to expect me to live past age 12!
]
 ]
They've put her back on Cipro because they're afraid the Furadantin will stop working if she continues to take it. She's allergic to penicillin, so her options are limited as it is.

From there, the whole night went downhill. It started pouring and both kids were miserable the whole night. I had a good idea to bring bubbles to keep them both occupied, and it definately would have gotten Ringo's attention, but I forgot them, and left them in the hotel room. Would have made for a much better night. Oh well... it was memorable anyway!

Tell her that's from a Vet too!
So..... I think Dad is taking a couple of days off to stay with her (in the hosp or at home, whatever) and I'm going to go to work for a couple of days... I'm using up ALL my vacation time.
