Wow, you're living it up!!! I'm having a glass of red wine, thanks. It's all because of you, Barb. I kept seeing your avatar with that empty glass and the power of suggestion was too much!!
 Cabernet sure beats the hell out of Aleve.

I worked at home today, just to give them another day free from my massive weight. I wound up doing MORE work than if I'd actually gone to the office. My left knee seems to be on the mend, but the right one still feels as if someone hit it with a sledgehammer. One more day and then I'm going to throw in the towel and see a specialist, even if I pay out of my own pocket. |

One of my knees has been bothering me off and on since I tripped at work, but I can run. It's going down stairs that kills me. Don't you hate the thought of going to a doctor, putting up with appointments, co-pays, referrals? I dread going cause I can't stand all of the b.s. in between. I hope you start to heal up. Hopefully, you just really irritated it and it will take some time to heal. Even with insurance, my doctors are so expensive. For my little stay in the emergency room, I owe $4,000 and I wasn't even ever admitted. I'm stress eating here tonight and will regret it in the morning! |

OUCH!! Four grand is a lot for an ER visit. . . . I wound up in the hospital back in '98 with severe respiratory problems and they kept me for a week. I had NO INSURANCE at the time. The bill was over $30,000 and it wrecked my credit for a few years.
I say do all the stress eating you need to. Sometimes it's the only thing that will soothe what's itchin' ya. You can always get back on the horse tomorrow.

Sure glad I live in Ontario, Canada. All medical apointments & surgeries are covered. We never see a bill. We only have to have insurance to cover our drugs.. or pay the full prices. |

I was told my new found exercise program will help me with the problems in the real world, Barb. I go over to the fitness center and concentrate on the treadmill and my music. All my troubles are gone for that time I've found out. I have one friend who says she doesn't exercise because it's boring. Well, I am using an mp3 player and it isn't boring at all--so far. Plus, the treadmill gives me a message of encouragement every five minutes. I think I overdid it a bit yesterday. My thighs are sore this morning. Probably means I need to do more. |

You are doing so well Barb. And Linda too. You know Linda, by the way, with regular exercise it takes a month or so before it becomes actually fun...because of the lovely endorphins that rush out and make you happy while you do it..then it's great, just have to keep the habit. Barb you are our inspiration...don't fall off the wagon! I am impressed with your efforts, keep at it girl! I am happy now because I have walked every day this week, adding more time every day (today I walked about 45 minutes). Soon I'll get a pedometer and start keeping track. |

Many years ago, I used to swim and I know about the endorphins. I did 25 minutes today. I got a massage yesterday and the massage therapist said I shouldn't walk after a massage. Going for 30 minutes tomorrow. I've increased the incline and speed each day. The massage therapist told me not to run, as it will be too hard on my knees. Last thing I need is knee replacement surgery. |

I used to get the high when I swam. I really liked to swim because I knew I would get the high. Today I did 1.67 miles in 30 minutes. My thighs are sore, but nothing bad. When the timer said 10 minutes to go, I thought I couldn't do 10 more minutes. Before I knew it, it said 5 minutes to go and then COOL DOWN. I know I've burned some calories, as the machine says I have. I don't see any weight loss and I don't own a pair of scales. This morning I was in the locked fitness room when somebody came in and didn't lock the door. They did a few turns on the bicycle and left. They didn't lock the door when they left, so I had to pause the machine and go lock the door. I'm not going to be in my world of walking and listening to the Beatles and have some weirdo without a key walk in on me. |

Glad to hear you are still keeping up with the treadmill despite the pain Linda. Good going. Anyone hear from Bev lately? I'm worried about her. I have kept up with walking every day a little more, adding to the amount I usually have to walk to get Grace off to school. Every morning I try to walk farther and I am beginning to feel less tired everyday, which is a great motivator. Barb, excellent about the six miles! I really am impressed -- do you run every day? |

I didn't walk yesterday or today, but hope to walk tomorrow. I'm tired and my leg hurts. I talked to a co-worker and she said you can make shin splints worse to the point where you can't exercise at all. I researched on the internet and found out that is true. |

Linda, shin splints can be very painful and if you overdo it, it can result in stress fractures. I know, I had them many years ago. Take a rest, and start back up gradually. Maybe 2 miles was too much for you. I'm now up to a 5 -6 mile run almost every morning, but this has taken some time and I'm not setting any speed records. I actually get much more sore when I hit the weights. My pecs and arms are screaming today.

I did some internet research. I'm not walking again until the pain is gone. I did ride the stationary bicycle for 20 minutes. I did over 5 miles and watched an ambulance come into the complex and leave with it's siren blaring. Sure glad they hadn't come for me. Yes, I overdid it. I should have stopped when my leg started to hurt and I didn't. I thought no pain, no gain. I did talk to my doctor today and he said the bicycle should be fine. I think my leg muscles will be sore, but I need to use those muscles also. |

Blimey - This was for genuine reasons for needing an ambulance? We'll be charged here if people call an ambulance without a good reason but if an ambulance is required we don't have to pay. I'm going for my walk in about 30 minutes. I've been doing about 45 minutes to an hour every other day - which is very good for me. I haven't quite got the healthy eating sorted out yet but I'm working on it. |

Well even the police have to make a judgement as to whther an amblance is required or not, as we were told that the Health Authority would bill the Police Authority if in their view it was not necessary though i have never heard of it happening. Since the Police could claim that their staff with first aid training etc and the nature of the job are qualified. But i have heard of members of the public being charged here. Well when we got up aftertwice yesterday doing that girly excercise, you know the step thingy, on the stairs to discover 13stone 9 (or coz i am such a considerate person 190.6lbs). However, after two cups of tea and no fags and one glass of orange juice I was 13 stone 10 or 191.6 lbs. |

Medical costs are some of my biggest expenses right now. Still paying on my son's fiasco last year. I was in Emergency for 9 hours in June and that wracked up $9000,00 for tests and drugs. It scares me to death to get sick so that is why I'm trying to stay healthy and stay away from those doctors. It is crazy expensive here in the U.S. Sandra. Sandra, congratulations on the walking regime you've established. Sounds like you have a good start. I am so addicted to my early morning exercise that I actually look forward to it every morning. I'm walking or running between 4 - 6 miles every day and hit the weights 3 times per week. I've pretty much got the healthy eating down with just an occasional treat. Lately, I've been having a bit too much wine though. To date, I've lost 18 pounds and want to lose a bit more. More than weight, I want to be fit, healthy and around a few years more to pester my kids. |

I hope to get to the point where I am addicted to my exercise. I hope that I will lose weight and be more fit. I eat pretty healthy. I don't drink and have sweets only occasionally. I will try to get on the bike again today. Not having a good day, so don't know if I will succeed. |

Thanks Barb my reason for trying to develop a healthier eating plan is mainly just that, to keep me healthy, which fortunately I am but I mustn't be complacent. I've got in to some bad habits lately so if I follow a healthier eating regime and lose a bit of weight too that would be a bonus. Running is definitely not for me. Most of my family are sporty/athletic but it seems to have bypassed me completely. I never run for anything - well maybe if the house was on fire  With your system of health care do you pay the costs up front and then claim through your insurance is that how it works? |

Most of the time, the insurance is billed first and they pay their portion, less my copayment and deductible, which is quite hefty. I have a $1000.00 deductible per person, per year, and varying co-pays, depending upon the service. Then, after that, the insurance pays 80% of most services. The tricky part is that many times they don't approve of charges, despite going to assigned doctors and facilities. It seems they wrack up charges knowing you have insurance. Then, there is the monthly premiums taken out of my pay check. It's still better than not having insurance at all, but we need to do better in this country. Better yet is not getting sick - that is probably a better insurance policy. Keep up the good work, Sandra. |

With my insurance, the practioner always bills the insurance first and then I have a $400 a year deductible. I have to pay up to $4,000 a year before the catastrophic protection kicks in. After I meet the deductible, I have to pay 10% of the fee my insurance negotiates with the practitioner. My insurance is very good. I do pay premiums every month. |

Have you guys ever watched the t.v. show, The Biggest Loser? Well, can you imagine losing 15 or 20 pounds in a week? What the hell aren't they eating and what kind of exercise are they doing? I know they have a lot to lose, but that has got to be unhealthy. Also, tempting people with unhealthy food - what a horrible premise for a show! |

I wish I could lose that much weight for a few weeks! But yes it has to be unhealthy, unless it's a lot of water. So.......has Bev been in hiding???? I have her phone number and I'll give her a call in a few hours. I think it's only 6:20 a.m. in CA. Your up early Barb. We still have to do that phone call. It's been so crazy here with my step-moms surgery, which turn out they think noncancerous. Was a mass of sac filled pus that attache to her stomach wall, liver, spleen....had to cut it all apart. But she came through surgery good. Only problem is her blood pressure is really low 87/34. So they had to put her back on the ventilator, tubes in her nose, down her throat, which is very uncomfortable. Their giving her pain meds to ease the pain and hope she sleeps as much as possible. They have her intensive care for people with breathing problems. Then Tuesday my mother-in-law will have her 2nd knee replacement surgery. She's 77 and in good health. Hopefully everything will go as smoothly as the last knee replacement. We will be spending lots of time between the two of them. Plus my Dad is staying with us and can be a pain when it comes to him taking his meds, especially his diabetic meds and eating!!!!! It's like pulling teeth! I think after all of this, we will need a vacation. |

Yikes, Judy! You have a full plate these days. I thought I had a hectic schedule and crazy goings on. Be sure to take some time for yourself....looking forward to our phone call. I have to go to work today, so am up early to fit my exercise in. I am working very hard at this, despite obstacles. I'm determined to not add to some exisiting problems! Oh, I'm glad you're going to call Bev. I've been very worried. Please tell her I said hello and I sure hope everything is ok. I miss her around here. Slow and easy with the exercise, Judy....it's the best way. |

With my crappy knees, that's the only way I can go! I hope to get some of this weight off so I can have surgery without all the unnecessary worries of being overweight. Dr's will do the surgery, but said if I was their wife, they would recommend trying to lose weight first. So it's time to buckle down and YES, make time for myself. Have a nice day at work! We'll get to that phone call yet. And I will tell Bev everyone is worried about her and you are too! |

Have you heard from Bev Linda? How is she? Does anyone know? Dotty, I am glad to hear you are working on loving yourself. It's the best thing we all can do. I have added something to improve, as some may know from the women and cola thread. I have decided to stop drinking diet cola, which is going to be harsh for me. I decided to do this because of the study that came out that identifies the phosphoric acid added to all colas as the chemical that leaches calcium from women's bones. I have a family history of first-degree relatives with severe osteoporosis...I don't need this problem for me. Thanks again beatlesluver for posting this article on SF. I took my first step yesterday, as I bought diet tonic water and diet Fresca. I figured it will be truly difficult to give up the fizzy stuff but I can give up the cola so I looked through the grocery store to find out which sodas have phosphoric acid in them. Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet Dr. Pepper all have phosphoric acid. However, diet Sprite, diet Fresca, diet cream soda and diet chocolate soda do not. Plus I am going to get out my Mr. Ice Tea and make decaf ice tea soon which I really love. Wish me luck in this...it's like giving up smoking for me. |

Good luck, Lisa! If you have been drinking a lot of diet cola, you will probably go through some mild withdrawal symptoms - unless all of your cola was decaf, of course. It's a positive step, so all the best with it!

I think it's alright to let you know Judy spoke to Bev and everything is fine....except for her computer, which is keeping her from posting here! She is planning on getting it fixed. I was concerned also, Linda. Now...how is everyone doing? I'm still plugging along with running/walking an average of 4 miles a day, weights 3 times a week and keeping ouwies (injuries) to a minimum. Have also lost 19 pounds to date...a few more to go. More importantly, I think I may have kicked my full time sugar addiction and now just do it recreationally! |

Thanks Andy. The words of encouragement are much appreciated. I'm in my first week of little to no diet coke and it's been fine actually. I expect I will get restless soon enough though after the novelty passes. Luckily, I gave up the caffeine about a year ago so that is not an issue because that would have been nasty. I'm very glad to hear that Bev is okay and just the computer has been keeping her away. Hope we can hear from her directly soon. I've been plugging away at the walking though I found that this week and last week my knees started hurting, for the first time ever. So I bought walking shoes yesterday and have started breaking them in. I suspect that this will really help me out and stop that silly knee pain. Also I'm going to start doing stretches briefly after I walk to help. |

The weathers getting warmer, and the school holidays are over - back to school tomorrow. So im going to work out a study routine and start going for a morning walk and watching what I eat (no more junk food - beautiful summer fruits are starting to come in, so I have no excuse). Summers coming up and I don't want to be pale and flabby!
