Sorry you had a bad day, Jayne. Let's hope for a better one today. Remember to do something good for youself. I woke up late for some reason and need to get moving here. Got fog to run in this morning, but it sort of suits my mood as well. Hope everyone in the self improvement mode is doing well....and improving. |

Hey everyone! I got back from my workout too late last night to come on and post. Welcome, Tim! Yesterday, Day Three -- BACK and SHOULDERS. I survived. We did 30 minutes on the treadmill, alternating between sprints and jogs. We also had to run BACKWARDS(!) on the treadmill -- that was different!
We did 30 minutes of floor work with weights, elastic bands (those things are harder to use than you would think -- OUCH!!) and crunches and push ups. We also did exercises to help strengthen the lower back. I'm already starting to see some small changes in my body. That alone gives me reason to stay motivated and want to continue.
I've got my refrigerator full of fresh and frozen vegetables, every type of FAKE meat product on the market, soy milk, low-fat yogurt, low-cal whole wheat bread and LOTS of cold water -- the best thing going!! Barb, you inspired me to go find some blueberries. I'd forgotten how much I LOVE those!! Trader Joe's makes them affordable. I haven't had any wine (champagne is my drink of choice) since last Sunday night at the Hollywood Bowl. I'll probably allow myself a couple of glasses this weekend. I think it's important to allow a treat from time to time; otherwise, the feeling of complete deprivation takes over and overindulgence strikes!! Today is a "gym-free" day. Gotta give my knees a rest, and then tomorrow morning, it's back to the boot camp!! What's everyone else doing ????

As far as excersize goes, as much as I can stand. Within reason. One of the things we discovered when I had my CT scan last month, was that the pain in my back was arthritis. I'm thinking that as I lose the weight, that may ease up a bit. I was afraid it was a disc or something that would require surgery. My back is what keeps me from excersizing more. After I walk for a couple of blocks, my lower back tightens up and I have to sit down for a couple of minutes. Then I can resume. I know what you mean about the dreadful potato!! My problem is carbs, I don't really have a sweet tooth. I like the idea about the wine, though!!! Have a great weekend...I hope we can compare notes Monday when I return to this computer! |

I really need to start on an exercise program myself. I keep saying tomorrow I will do that. I've been saying it for about a month now and, so far, tomorrow hasn't come. Maybe tomorrow? I'm much too busy Saturday for my exercise program to start, so maybe Sunday I can work on the treadmill. I was told to start very slowly. I did walk from the Mirage to the Aladdin and back twice in Las Vegas--even though the bell hop said I couldn't walk that far. I think I did it to spite him. |

I don't feel so self-improved today. Ran my 4 miles, ate healthy, etc, but my knee is killing me. I'm getting pretty darn good on that guitar, if I don't say so myself...which I just did. Got lots of homework and a presentation to work on...so stay well until we meet again, people. |

Barb, Bev and everyone: I am impressed with your hard work and commitment. Esp. Barb and Bev. And for anyone who had some backsliding thank you for telling us because it's so human to slip and sharing those moments make us all not feel so bad. This week I did lots of walking so I am happy about that, but I still haven't gone to the gym. Sigh there's always next week. About the diet I was good a lot, but I did have some pizza yesterday. And chocolate. sigh my downfall. But I did have a hummus and cucumber sandwich for lunch the day before. I went to the doctor and I've gained five pounds in the last month. And it's all belly Fiona, so my belly and your belly should meet up for a workout. PM me Andy or Fiona if you want to talk about low cal vegan recipes.I've found that cucumber with rice vinegar, salt and pepper and some dill is really nice, esp. if the cucumber is fresh. Jayne, i don't know about what's available in markets around you, but lately here there is low cal microwave popcorn everywhere, and they even sell it in "snack size" bags that total 100 calories a piece. Barring getting those, it is possible to microwave plain popcorn in a regular paper bag, if you want I can look up how. You don't use oil just the microwave, then you can put whatever fat free seasoning on it you want. Good luck everyone. One day at a time is good advice, also progress not perfection. |

Did my long run/walk today. Need to hit those weights as well. Does anyone know about coconut oil? I have heard it is actually a very healthy oil because it is made of medium chained triglycerides. I use it occasionally on veggies (not good at high heat though), but it is a saturated fat so that can raise cholesterol and triglycerides....I am so confused.

Linda, welcome!! Glad to have another one in our group.
That is ONE LONG WALK from the Mirage to the Aladdin, especially in the Vegas heat!
Lisa, thanks for the nice words. By the way, would you mind sharing your low-cal vegan recipes for the rest of us to see?? I've got some cookbooks of that type, but I always wind up spending hours pouring over the pages, and by the time I'm finished browsing, I'm too tired to cook and wind up grabbing something "quick" (and naughty from the 'fridge!) Tim, I work with a lady who has Type II diabetes and she's been morbidly obese for at least the 10 years I've known her. She was diagnosed with the diabetes about 2 years ago, and she tried all sorts of weight loss plans, to no avail. She went to her doctor, who began giving her Meridia. The medication is actually quite expensive without insurance coverage, but her doctor found a way to get free samples from the pharmaceutical rep and gives them to her at no charge. The weight seemed to just melt off of her. She's already lost almost 100 pounds, and she's now able to walk more easily, not having to carry that extra weight on her frame. She's even taken up a second job for more physical activity and money -- she cleans offices. She pushes a vacuum and does a lot of walking that way. It's also a forced means of exercise, plus she gets paid to do it, and it doesn't matter what the weather is outside. NO EXCUSES!!

Barb, I think I remember reading some pretty negative things about coconut oil a couple of years back. Seems to me it was from a report by one of those public watchdog groups and it was in regard to popcorn prepartion. I'll see if I can track that down. You know, it seems there's a problem with almost every type of oil, so I guess it's a matter of choosing the lesser of the evils.
Glad to hear that you're making such progress on the musical front. I still haven't found my Beatles instruction book. I'll probably just go out and try to buy another copy. If I find the other one, I'll send it to you. My knees are killing me today, too. They're not used to the impact from all the running that I've been doing. I'm hoping that will subside. I may buy some elastic wraps for them, to try to add a little support. If our knees go, we're in TROUBLE!!

Last night I went out with a few friends for some live music, food and drinks. I was the last to arrive and the group was just finishing up a couple of large plates of fried mushrooms, cheese fries, and something else I couldn't identify. They had already had a couple of beers. I didn't have ANY of the appetizers, and the only things on the menu that weren't fried, cheese-covered or built of meat were a Caesar salad (heavy dressing, though), a garden salad, or a veggie burger. I chose the veggie burger, sans cheese, and ate it open-face, and I didn't eat the fries!! That's a major accomplishment for me!!! Those darned potatoes usually get me every time!! Score one for me!!
:woot: Today's class is Basic Training -- I think that means they throw the book at us!! God, I hope my knees hold out. :hmm:

I'm going to try and lose the several pounds I've put on over the last few months from snacking on tasty stuff like chocolate & chips. How? By not snacking or by snacking on fruit & raw veggies instead... with the occasional lapse when popcorn is on the menu.

Well, I've really gone and done it now. I've got two flat tires. That is, both of my knees are out of commission right now.  I guess I tried to be too heroic by extending my body beyond its limits and now I'm paying the price. It is a long walk from the Mirage to the Aladdin, but after the bellhop told me I couldn't do it, I was going to do it and I did it. Yes, it was hot. I also wanted to time it. With the lights and crowd of people, it took 20 minutes, but I did it. I may need to lose a few pounds, but I can walk that far and I did. I went to a lecture by my former doctor last night. I hadn't seen him since 2000 when I was really, really sick. He kept saying how good I look and said not to worry about the excess weight--it's more important that you are alive. That was nice of him to say, but I still want to work on the weight.I'm a vegetarian, but sometimes I slip up. Some veggie foods are fattening, too. I don't slip up on not eating meat, but I do eat some other things I probably shouldn't. |

Don't we all?? I find it easier to stock my 'fridge with healthy foods and that way, if I'm tempted to cheat, I can't because the "naughty" foods aren't in there!!! I'm in my car all day long on most days, and that's the challenge for me. Lately, I've been packing a brown bag lunch and sticking with that. The challenge for me is finding the time to prepare the food and pack it. My cats always want to "help" me when I'm in the kitchen.

Don't take all that change and physical activity on all at once...the body does rebel and sometimes big time! Best of luck to you all on your continued efforts... |

Here I sit, with both knees wrapped in Ace bandages, trying to encourage others.
 I'm afraid that in my enthusiasm to "improve" myself, I've done just the opposite to my knees!!
I really pushed myself hard last Thursday, and my knees were trying to tell me to take it easy, but I didn't listen. I went to bootcamp class on Saturday ANYWAY, and I literally limped out of class and straight into the drug store downstairs.
I don't think I'll be able to make it to my class for at least the next few days. Right now, walking is a challenge.
On a positive note, my pants are starting to fit a little more loosely, and I haven't craved any sweets at all the last few days!! I also noticed that my mental outlook is brighter -- a direct result of the exercise and proper nutrition, in my opinion. Lord knows, it's not because of all the good news here and in the world lately.
I hope you guys will stay on the bandwagon with me. |

I hope you're only talking metaphorically, Dorothy. You shouldn't ever starve yourself to lose weight, as the body, when it receives food again, will store it away in your fat cells thinking that you're going to deprive it of all the things it wants and needs. A calorie controlled diet is fine, but food deprivation is not.

Dorothy, listen to Andy. He's a very wise person. When you try to "starve" yourself, the body adjusts and will try to hold onto body fat as a defense mechanism. You're actually defeating yourself by doing this. Also, when you don't get the proper nutrients, your moods will be affected, and not in a good way. When doctors treat patients for depression and other mood disorders, one of the first things they do is to scrutinize the patient's nutrition habits. If you eat little or nothing at all, or just eat junk, your moods will reflect that. Also, if you like burritos, you can find some really tasty veggie burritos at Trader Joe's. Add some salsa and you've got a tasty and healthy meal.

$20.00 Sometimes we just need to be reminded! A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 bill In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?" Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, "Who still wants it?" Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. "Now, who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air. My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE and WHOSE WE ARE. |

Bev, how are you doing? Your knees okay? I haven't been to the gym yet. sigh Yesterday I was so incapacitated by a headache I went to bed at 7:30 pm. I feel better now and I will go on a walk. Somehow the gym is intimidating. However I did have a veggie burrito for lunch so I feel happy about that and made the split pea soup yesterday. BTW Bev about a simple vegan dinner -- just get the "Thick As Fog" split pea soup that most grocery stores sell -- it's dried peas and a little seasoning, and follow package directions. Don't put in a ham bone (obviously) and it's entirely veggie (you also chop up onions, carrots, celery and garlic for it and it tastes great). It takes time to make (1 1/2 hours) but it makes a HUGE quality that will freeze well. |

(((BARB))) That's fantastic!!! I bow down to you. No sugar, 16lb. weight loss and 35 miles of running per week -- you are my new hero!! You embody the old saying "Slow and steady wins the race." I know you've made these changes one day at a time, and they are probably habits by now. That's the best way to do it. Way to go, girl!!

I have some good news and some not-so-good news. I'll start with the good news.
I have been very, very good about eating only healthy foods and small, sensible portions. I haven't had any alcohol in a week. The wonderful part of my news is that I see a new reflection looking back at me when I stand in front of the mirror. My slacks are starting to become baggy, and not because I am trying to dress like a home girl!! My cheekbones are starting to show and I think I even look younger!! (That last part could be just wishful thinking on my part. ) The not-so-good news?? Remember last weekend when I said that I had wrecked my knees?? Well, it's now one week later, and my knees have gotten WORSE instead of better.
The last couple of days I could barely walk, and yesterday I had to leave work early, as I nearly fell while getting out of my car. My knees seemed to buckle beneath me. I spent last night and part of today lying on the couch with my legs elevated and a heating pad on the aching joints. It's a chore to even get up and go to the bathroom. I'm beginning to think that I've really done some major damage. Going to my joke of a doctor will accomplish nothing. My insurance plan is an HMO and anytime I ask my doctor about something, his answer is always the same: "Oh, it will be fine."  He is either the laziest SOB on the planet or is trying to save money for the insurance company, for which I am sure he is rewarded financially. I can't go see a specialist without a referral from above-mentioned jerk, so I'm basically SOL.  I guess I will continue to take it easy this weekend and hope that my knees will improve. At first, I was upset that I was missing exercise class. Now I'm just hoping I will be able to start walking normally again. Oh, the things we take for granted!

Bev: Hooray about the good news. Glad to hear that your clothes are baggy! You've avoided drinking! You have cheekbones! So sorry though about your knees. Make sure to use ibuprofen too to decrease swelling and also ice your knees to decrease swelling.... Here's a bit of info: "The joints of your body are supported by ligaments - strong bands of connective tissue that connect one bone to another. A sprain is a simple stretch or tear of the ligaments. The areas of your body that are most vulnerable to sprains are your ankles, knees and wrist. A sprained ankle can occur when your foot turns inward. This can put extreme tension on the ligaments of your outer ankle and cause a sprain. A sprained knee can be the result of a sudden twist. Wrist sprains most often occur when you fall on an outstretched hand. Most mild sprains heal with "R.I.C.E." (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and exercise. Moderate sprains may also require a period of bracing. The most severe sprains may require surgery to repair torn ligaments." Even if you feel your MD sucks try and see him anyway if it gets severe and push him big time for a referral. It's important to be a good advocate for your poor knees.

Beverly I'm so sorry to hear your knee is worse!! Too bad you can't get the kitties and doggies to do some of the work for you
What would happen if you put your "good knee" and foot down and demanded a referral from your dr? Seems like you might need to be seen by someone soon.I'm proud of you that your clothes are fitting looser. I haven't worked out for a week as I have a terrible cold and it's gone into my chest. I don't have any strength or the breath to do anything. Mike is down in San Diego for a Marine Family Day. Our future son-in-law invited us down, but I just didn't feel like going. Spent the night on the couch falling asleep at 5 in the evening. Hope you are doing better...............have a talk with your critters maybe they will bring you something out of the frig Carol |

Sorry about the knees, Bev. I hate it when something like this takes the wind out of your exercise sails! Hang in there and you will heal. Just take it a little easier when you're able to resume. I'm the queen of hurting myself and going full bore once I start something. I'm learning moderation in my old age! |

I'm proud of all of you!
Bev, I'm sorry to hear about your knee. Here's a suggestion...just go a little at a time, no need to rush or push yourself too far, too fast. I'm a strong advocate of walking, but you need to do so at your own pace, and if it's harming you then you should ease up until you're better. One good thing, as you lose weight I think you'll find yourself feeling better and lighter and that may take the stress off your knee. Keep up the good work, ladies! Merry

Sounds like you're doing great. After all the walking I did yesterday, I will make a public vow to continue it when I get home. We have the treadmill in the fitness center and I will start upon my return home. Yesterday about killed my feet. I don't think I can run. I know I can't run now. Maybe by spring, I could run, but the threadmill will have to do. My doctor told me to start with about 10 minutes and build up to at least 45 minutes. I didn't like the pictures that were taken of me yesterday. I've put on more than 10-15 pounds and they must come off. |

Lisa, thanks for the advice. I've been horizontal since Friday, with the exception of getting up to go to the bathroom, feeding my little ones or trying to feed myself. I'm not sure if I've sprained, strained or torn ligaments. . . all I know is that if I merely touch the inner, lower half of my knee, it is VERY sore to the touch and is still swollen. I think I will try to have it looked at this week. Right now, just being able to walk normally seems like a dream. Exercise is completely out of the question.
Barb, I'm encouraged to know from you that you've been injured and have been able to return to running. I surely hope I don't have to give it up, but right now, I'll settle for being able to walk upright without pain. Linda, you can get great exercise on a treadmill from simply walking. I was in a hurry, and pushed myself too far. Just listen to your body -- it knows what you need. (((DAWN))) glad to see you here!!! It was lovely to see you in L.A. Hope we get to meet up in England someday soon!! Dorothy, glad to hear your breathing problems have improved. Merry, thanks for the words of encouragement.

I'm quite proud of myself. I did 10 minutes on a treadmill today. That is after I got on another one which didn't work properly and fell off. Came back to Sandy's and used hers and did my first 10 minutes. There are other things I need to do, but this is a start.

Hi, Sandy here. I did my 10 minutes after Linda was done. We reported the malfunctioning tredmill to the owners of the resort we were visiting. They unplugged it and put a sign "Out of Order" on it before we left. I try to do a half hour per day while watching Coronation St. I need to loose 30 lbs. |

You'll wind up like me if you push too hard, too fast. I've been housebound for the last 4 days, unable to walk without pain or difficulty. I'm going to the doctor in a couple of days to see what I've done. Welcome, Sandy!!! Linda, that's wonderful that you were able to do 10 minutes. I'm going to add on to the time and speed slowly. I don't need to do it in one month or two months. It took longer than that to put the weight on. I have been reading about what you did to your knees, Bev, and I can't end up like that. I thought that is what was happening when I fell on the treadmill at the resort and I'm in Toronto. All I could think of as I was falling was I won't be able to get on the plane tomorrow and go home.

It wasn't working properly. I fell to the ground and caught myself with my hands. I'm okay. It just scared me as when I thought I was slowing the treadmill down, it speeded up. We thought it was turned off, but it went past off and went at it's highest speed. That is when I fell. |
